  1. Here's a pretty easy project for owners of the Nature's Head toilet - a step to make the seat a more reasonable height. It's a slightly modified version of this new step from Squatty Potty. Since it's wood, it looks a lot better than the original plastic one, and also makes it pretty easy to modify. I wanted something that wouldn't take up most of the floor, so that we could leave it out and not have to worry about where to store it, so I scribed and cut notches on the legs to match the floor offset. That way it sits flush against the toilet and leaves plenty of room. As a bonus, the factory cutout matches the front of the Nature's Head pretty well without any modification. The legs do fold, so you could use it right out of the box if you wanted, and would be relatively easy to store - or just tip it up against the toilet. But making the notches and resealing it was a simple task and I kind of like that it looks a bit custom. It's polyurethaned and the hardware is chromed, so I suppose you could leave it out when showering, but it's easy enough to just prop it up behind the shower curtain so I'm sure that's what we'll do. I wish it were stained a bit darker to match the shower mat, but I wasn't concerned enough about it to bother with the sanding and staining. For a quick, two hour project, I think it turned out pretty well, and ended up just about the perfect height.

  5. It's been a much debated subject over the years. Originally, Oliver called them jacks and they were fine with owners lifting the tires off the ground if needed. (I've done that many times.). But there was a bit of a design issue with the earlier trailers in that the bracket to carry the jack was made of welded aluminum plates. A few brackets failed at the welds, which is obviously potentially pretty dangerous. They changed the bracket design to a steel angle, but also changed their tune on using the jacks as jacks. They became stabilizers and the tires stay on the ground. Except for a dwindling number of us rebels who throw caution to the wind. For me, I'm good with one set of tires off the ground, provided the slope of the site isn't crazy. But never both sets, since the jacks aren't really designed for lateral loads.

  6. EDIT 08/29/19. Added extra bolts here: ... https://olivertraveltrailers.com/topic/how-to-reinforce-your-bulldog-coupler-by-adding-extra-bolts/ EDiT 08/23/20. Replaced Grade 8 bolts with Grade 5 - IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ THIS: .... https://olivertraveltrailers.com/forums/topic/3564-bulldog-coupler-complete-bolt-failure/ EDIT 06/07/21. Link to coupler: https://www.amazon.com/Bulldog-028462-Trailer-Rectangular-Straight/dp/B00ZRVQPVK The supplied 2" coupler and hitch is marginal. It has a 7000 pound GVWR and the chain thrust wears the ball badly because of the small contact area. Here's info on the newest Andersen coupler and steps to swap the parts. Andersen is really bad about not showing the latest images. The newest ball mount is WAY different than the one pictured on their website. I think it is so they can dispose of obsolete parts rather than discounting them heavily, or scrapping them. EDIT 08/23/20. Andersen shows the latest style ball unit, I don’t know when they updated the pictures. Here is the new ball mount, which I received for $100. Included was a return shipping label for the old parts. It is next to the new larger Bulldog coupler. See this thread for upgrade info: .... https://olivertraveltrailers.com/topic/fyi-andersen-wd-hitch-ball-locking-up-or-load-noise-11/ EDIT 06/07/21: Andersen is still offering their special $100 upgrade deal as of this date, according to member “rleog”. The new design uses an aluminum collar to retain the seal, and to hopefully keep out moisture. The insert will extrude upwards and make a more intimate contact with the ring. I reinstalled the screws with anti-seize compound to prevent future problems. The new ball mount sits about 5/8" above my old one, with a fresh insert (500 miles towing). John Davies Spokane WA

  7. See this related thread for some initial ideas and comments. https://olivertraveltrailers.com/forums/topic/5711-add-a-dust-smoke-filter-to-a-window-anybody-done-it-ideas-welcome/ Step 1 Seal the gap. First, you need to seal the 1/4” gap between the window frame and the blind frame. 1/4” doesn’t sound like a big deal, but considering that is a 10 foot perimeter, it is a significant air leak, about 6 square inches! I chose this seal, 10 feet is just enough for one big LE2 window. Sealing the gap stops any unfiltered air from escaping that way, and in winter it will reduce cold air leakage. Frost King V27WA, White EPDM Rubber Self-Stick Weatherseal Tape, D-Section, 9/16" W, 5/16" T, 10 ft L, You need a 1/4” hole punch to make holes to go around the window screws, I already had one, but this would work: Punch the holes one by one for each section. Mark the location of each screw head by pushing hard on the seal, it will leave a clear imprint on the back side. Mark the SIDE of the seal with Sharpie (so you can still see where to put the punch). With a wooden backer board, punch a hole. Because of the adhesive, the punched-out part will try to clog up the punch, remove each one with a small tool. Once all the holes for a section are punched, install that piece and trim the end to clear the next clip. It helps to not peel off all the backing paper until you are ready for to set the last few inches in place. The seal should line up with the OUTSIDE of the window frame. Finish installing all sections, it took just under 10 feet on mine. If you have a wallpaper roller you can roll the rubber down hard, otherwise finger pressure is fine. Since I had a little left, I added two small sections to the bottom of the BLIND frame to help support the paper filter frame. More to follow. John Davies Spokane WA

  11. New thoughts on rugs after 6 months in our Elite II Twin: I tried the aforementioned 4 throw rugs from our previous RV, which was a class B+ van. Because of the layout of the floor, 4 separate small rugs (19.5x 35") were necessary. Theoretically, these should work in our Elite II. However, with the single run of floor from front to back, they are not ideal. I found I was always tripping on them. I liked the pattern/color, and luckily found the same in a 24" x 8ft runner, which covers from the outside of the shower to the end of the galley. We still used the two of the matching smaller rugs between the beds. However, the 2ft width does not cover the edge of the flooring where it laps over the fiberglass hull. Consequently we were dealing with trying to keep the little "gutter" along the flooring edges where dirt collects and is difficult to sweep out, a problem posted by others elsewhere. My solution has been to swap the 24" x 8ft runner for a 26" x 10ft runner we have in our hallway. The length reaches into the bed area, but that's ok since I knit a nice wool rug from Pendleton selvedges that perfectly fits between the beds. I laid it over the two feet of runner than extends into the bedroom, which also helps prevent the wool rug from sliding. We haven't camped with this setup yet, but I really like the way the "new" runner looks. It coordinates well with the Bohemian stripe pillows and matches the color of the flooring, hard to remove dirt is hidden by the rug, and the Ollie's "old" rug looks great in our hallway 😀 😀

  12. @John E Davies that looks real good. When you came up with the concept in another post I knew that you would come up with something effective that did not look cheesy (ie duct tape).

  13. Field testing and comments. Unfortunately the air is super clear, so I can’t actually see if the smoke smell gets trapped by the filter. View out the window: obviously it is restricted, but since I sleep head to front I can still see out toward the rear pretty well. The fit: the filter actually seals pretty darned well, almost like it was intended for the Ollie window. Keep in mind my filter is an inch too long, a 24” one would seal better in the middle where the slider goes by. Test setup, one MERV 12 filter in the rear curb side window. Turned OFF solar and the fridge (it cycled and messed up the readings). No other known ( fluctuating) electrical loads. Closed all other windows, bath vent and cabin door. Opened the Maxx Air vent fully. Using my Victron Connect app, I could watch the current draw from the fan. A higher amp draw means the fan is working harder. Other than the sound changes, that is the only way I could think of to quantify the effects. Note: the amp reading includes other operating devices, the fan uses less by itself. Fan at 100%, Window open, no filter 4.3 amps. Window closed, no filter 4.4 amps. Window open, filter installed 4.3 amps Fan at 50% Window open, no filter 2.0 amps Window closed, no filter 2.05 ? amps Window open, filter installed 2.0 amps The fan obviously struggled a LOT at 100% with everything closed, which you would expect. At half speed it is not so obvious. Try it sometime with your trailer….. The difference between with and without the filter is negligible, meaning the fan should not be stressed by the restriction. I could feel air coming in through the filter element, and nothing around the perimeter. Other than testing it in a wildfire smoke plume, I don’t know any other way to see if it works. I plan to seal two more windows and carry a total of three filters during my warm weather trips, that should really help, along with running my Honeywell HEPA filter. I am pleased, and I will update this thread later in the summer. John Davies Spokane WA

  14. Step 2 Trimming the filter I used a 25” long filter, because that is what goes in my home furnace. It fits OK but a 24” one would be better. These are high quality filters at a really good price. Nordic Pure 16x24x1 MERV 12 Pleated AC Furnace Air Filters 6 Pack Because you added a rubber seal in the corner, the filter hits it and won’t slide all the way to the end of the cavity. There was 3/4” gap on mine. Trim away the two offending corners, making sure that you don’t remove them entirely or the frame will be weak there. Use a razor knife and then CAREFULLY trim away the steel wires with some small cutters. If you are not careful they will make you bleed. Push any sticky-out bits inside so you won’t get poked. This is how it should look from the outside: And on the inside, the filter clears the seal in the two corners. The screen slides easily. John Davies Spokane WA

  24. I just went out and measured our 2021 Elite. The installed flooring is 22" wide. It is 6'-0" from where the cabin flooring starts outside the shower to the edge of the rear bed (when set up in that configuration). To cover that area of flooring with a one inch margin on all sides you would be looking for something that is 20" x 70". Have fun preparing for your new Elite! October will be here before you know it.

  25. SeaDawg, I have the Pirelli Scorpion AT's on my Xterra. When I had my Jeep (predecessor to the Xterra) I kept it in Bridgstone Duelers. Both are great tires. The little snow peaks? They are for real. I often have the Xterra off pavement on two tracks in the woods in wintertime.

  26. On my way to do a little fishin I stopped at Chris' Camp in Spearfish, SD. At checkin a worker at the park excitedly told me that there was another one of "dem" campers that he'd never seen before right here in the camp. He insisted that I hop into his gold cart so he could show me and we drove to site 74 but nobody was home. Hopefully we'll get a chance to have a mini-rally later! Bill

  27. I’ve noticed that the body does flex. Sometime when you think you are set up firmly watch the body in the area around the rear wheel well and the adjacent rear stabilizer and have someone move around inside the trailer. You’ll notice that the body moves more than the frame.

  31. Another update is now available - this time it is software for the "traffic". Over this past winter I planned a trip - this year it is Wyoming. Having completed similar trips in the past I know even small details like which gas stations I prefer and the coordinates of various boondocking spots and fishing spots. Needless to say - the entry of all these points/stops is reasonably time consuming. In final preparation for the start of the trip I had my 890 in my tow vehicle and decided to start the trip planner just to make sure that all was well. Unfortunately I got a message from the 890 which said that since the "transportation mode" was not the same the Garmin could not start the trip. OK - what the heck is the "transportation Mode"? A quick internet search turned up zilch. However, I remember that I have two vehicles programed into the 890 - my wife's car and my truck. Yep - I had constructed the trip plan while the 890 was in the setting for my wife's car - not my truck. Apparently there is no "easy" way to change the trip planner from one transportation mode (my wife's car) to another (my truck). Interestingly, the 890 says that there is a 4 mile greater distance in the route calculated for the truck versus the car. Since I happen to know all of the places I'm going on this trip - I know that there should be no problem getting my Ollie and truck there and back. Therefore, I'm not going to re-enter all of the data for the trip. But, I will not make this same mistake in the future!🙄 Bill

  32. We are scheduled to pick up our 2021 LE2 on September 16th. Does anyone know if the factory has made the fresh water tank pickup modification standard, or would we have to request it? Since we live on the west coast, I want to get as many mods done while in Hohenwald.

  33. Yeah we're all different. I like the feel of the wood in the Escapes and while the wall surface isn't my favorite neither is the starkness of the all shiny white interior of the Oliver which looks like it was used as a set for the Michael/Janet Jackson video Scream. But other factors tipped me to buying a TN based trailer rather than the one five hours from me just across the border in BC (most decisive was the interior plumbing on the Ollie versus the exterior on the Escape with the option to have foam sprayed over it and electric heat pads added under the tanks - the Oliver seems like a better four-ish seasons design). The formica and flooring and upholstery on the Escape can be customized with a very wide range of options available btw. There are other details on that list such as molded in versus screwed on cabinets etc. That said I toured the Escapes up in Chilliwack and liked them much more than other campers I'd seen up to that point in terms of build and aesthetic. What really bums me out are the RVs with dark stained wood cabinets and big baralounger type seating and such (the seventies are calling to get their designs back!!). I've done a few modifications to help soften the feel of the interior - putting some fabric on the walls in the corners at the back and also on the ceiling above the beds (covers the a/c which we'll at most rarely use - takes twenty seconds to remove via velcro attachment - and then replace - if we do want to use the a/c) and putting photos on most of the surfaces where they'll fit and look good and not get kitchen mess on them.

  35. When looking for RVs I quickly zeroed in on fiberglass trailers. I looked at Casita as they are so close. Interior was a no go. Just felt cheap and carpet a huge turn off. Same for Scamp. Escape seems like a step up from those two but still not the same and while 5th wheel interesting interior was a hard pass. No trailer is perfect but Oliver interior are like nothing else. Now it isn’t for everyone but I smile every time I step inside my Ollie!

  37. Here is a "Nice Tip" I got during the Oliver Rally in Alabama, which I think will make life a little easier. I don't remember the guy's name, but I think it is a great Idea, thanks! Basically, it involves replacing the original 5/8 inch Silver-Pin/Light Duty Spring Clip with the Red-Pin/Heavier Duty Spring Clip. IMHO, there are several benefits, 1. The Pin has a Handle (Red) which makes installing and removing the Pin much easier. I also elected to get a 1/4 inch Spring Clip which is much heavier than the Stock Clip, and therefore is harder to come out accidentally. 2. The 5/8 inch Pin has a Tapered Tip so it can aid in centering the Pin into the hole. 3. The Pin (p/n 269028) is available at Tractor Supply for only $4.99, the Spring Clip (p/n 268616) for $2.99. Finally, I put a light coat of Vaseline on the Pin and in the corresponding holes in the Hitch to make inserting the Pin a little easier, it won't stain your cloths either.

  38. I read Where the Crawdads Sing and enjoyed that book. I like to read at bedtime. During the day at work and on my drive to and from I like to listen to Audiobooks. I download mine the the digital library for free using the Libby app. I also read/listen to a lot of James Patterson, John Grisham and if you haven't seen the movie Woman in the Window you might enjoy listening to that audiobook.
