We have started listening to Empire of The Summer Moon: Quannah Parker and The Comanche  Indians, The Most Powerful Tribe In America. Being from Oklahoma and having lived in Texas for many years it’s a fascinating account of the Indian tribes and their history. Our last long drive was over eight hours and we weren’t ready to stop! if you are driving through Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas or New Mexico it’s a great book.

Empire of the Summer Moon is a phenomenal read (or listen).  We now have a "tribe" of about thirty people that have read and shared the book.  We enjoy discussing it when we get together.  There was talk for a while about a movie being produced on it...but, I haven't heard any more traffic on that.  I sure hope it gets released as a movie and it is done properly.

Any book by Joseph Marshall III is a good read/listen.  He is a Sicangu Lakota from the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota.  His knowledge of history, archery, and the land is remarkable.  The wisdom he shares is powerful and good.

  2. <SALUTE> to an AF brother!  I grew up an AF NCO brat.  I am here today to type to you because of the AF - in more ways than one.  I fell out of many of your aircraft and the AC-130 came as a blessing more than once.  So, thank you to you and all your fellow Airmen/women.

Your system of using the topper and putting them in the bed is a good one!  I have a topper on my truck and can't live without it.  Ya - I ended up with a bunch of surgeries and hardware in me, so the pedal assist sure makes it more do-able and enjoyable.

    Ranger,

That is such good work! I know it provides many happy memories for you and enriches the lives of so many others. We love cycling and it does nourish the soul, I can only imagine what it would be like to be able to cycle through the Badlands each day.

We are also Trek riders, nice gravel bike you have there (if I am seeing it correctly). We currently have hard-tail MTBs - I used to be an FS rider but things are slowing down for me so I have to take it easy(er).

Keep up the good work my friend!

    Brian,

Thank you for your kind words!  It is very rewarding for sure.  It is also very tough and reminds me how blessed I am.

I was driving from Wanblee to Interior (south entrance of the Badlands) one night and saw a flashlight going up and down along the road.  I slowed down to see if someone was in distress.  It was a grandmother and granddaughter walking with four bags of groceries under their arms.  I asked if I could give them a ride and they happily accepted.  As I spoke to them, they said they were returning from town after a store run.  It is seven miles from their home to the store.  They walked 14 miles to get four arm-loads worth of groceries!  I asked if they could use bicycles and they said that they would love some.  We made sure to get them two bikes (with baskets) that could help them with their grocery runs.  Pretty dang humbling at the end of the day.

Its great to know another Ollie cycling couple!  Next time you are in the Badlands, consider your MTBs.  It is some of the best biking I have ever been blessed to do.  You will enjoy it immensely.  The trails and hardball roads are all great to ride on.  I am like you and have to take it easy now...heck, I even cheat = I use a electric pedal assist bike.  Love that you have Treks as well...you can't go wrong with them.  They are quality bikes.  Will you get a bike rack for your Ollie when you take delivery?  We purchased ours used (Hull 339) and it had a rack already installed (one of the selling points for this particular one).  We enjoy having it.  I purchased a cover for the bikes due to rain/debris/etc... getting kicked up back there.  It helps.

I hope your delivery of your Ollie comes soon and you enjoy it!  We have had ours for ten months now and love it.  My wife just retired as a school teacher and I am retired Army.  So, we hope to have many an adventure with it.  My wishes are the same for you and yours!

  4. Brian,

Thanks for sharing your post on the Badlands!  I am blessed to do volunteer work on the Pine Ridge Reservation each year where we work on the local's bicycles (73) and donate bicycles (120) to those in need.

I boondock on an Elder's place outside of Wanblee, just south of the Badlands.  Thankfully, I was able to bicycle each day in the Badlands and the land massages my soul.  The Lakota there are challenged in many ways but, are warm, friendly and loving.  They are deeply appreciative of the bicycles - for most, it is their only means of transportation.  I am truly thankful to be invited and be a part of such a wonderful program.

Here are a few pics from this year's trip and the Give-Away with "Bikes to Pine Ridge":

  5. We have used HH for three stays now and love them.  We have stayed at one with full hookups, one with electric only and one that was completely dry.  They are great to stay at and well worth the subscription cost (we have the additional "Boondocking" subscription as well).  Hope that helps you in your decision making.  Appreciate your great Youtube channel!

Photos are from HH locations in Minnesota and Missouri:

While he is underneath, have him check the four big jack bolts (use a 3/4” deep socket) that go down through the frame, spec s 43 foot pounds. They do loosen, as do the suspension and ubolt bolts. He probably already was going to check those, but he is probably completely unfamiliar with Ollies and their peculiarities. If any of the lower jack bolts are loose, have him retorque the four inside that go sideways. Good luck.

Wilco...great info.  Muchas Gracias!  You are right - most rv mobile mechanics are not familiar with Oliver.  It is pretty awesome when they do see one for the first time (had this happen a couple of times) and they are very impressed.

IF the noise is coming from your suspension system, I would say you need to inspect the bronze bushings inside your spring eyes. Greasing them will hide any noise coming from worn bushings but it won't fix them. They would need to be replaced. A messy, time consuming job but not too difficult. I can give you some tips if it comes to that.

The first thing I would pay attention to if you hear popping when jacking the tongue is the propane housing cover. Sometimes it will shift forward or backward a bit. Check the nylon bushings attached to the underside of the lid. There have been some recent reports here of them coming off.

Appreciations for the info! Unfortunately, I have to hire a mobile RV mechanic to help determine the cause.  I am unable to get down under the trailer myself due to injuries sustained over 28 yrs of military service.  I will give this info to him to help ascertain what is going on.  The sound (a popping/creaking) seems to occur in the middle underside (near axels and frame) of the trailer.  I spoke with Mike (very nice and helpful) at Oliver and he thinks the Dexter system needs to be lubricated.  So, we will start with that and then move on to more troubleshooting if needed.  I sure hope I am not hijacking this thread in any way.  Either way, I am thankful to Corvus and ScubaRx for your assistance.  Our Ollie is my ticket to peace and tranquility and hope to get it back operational soon.

The noise would stop with the bolts that hold the stabilizer and ring were loose. On the last attempt to find a solution I tightened the rear bolt first and the noise stopped. I had also added a couple of drops of silicon lubricant where the stabilizer goes through the hull. I expect the noise to return eventually, but hopefully this will buy some time until I can take it to Oliver for a permanent fix.

    Corvus,

Could you post a picture of where you did this work please?  I am not familiar with where you are describing.  Thanks in advance.
