  1. For the most part I don't really use the TV very often -

But, when on my annual two month fly fishing trips sometimes I get back to the Ollie a bit tired - don't feel like reading but I know that I'll fall asleep if I start listening to an audio book.  So, I bring along a number of DVD movies (very few times would I be in a location that has enough cell service to enable "streaming").  During the two months I'll watch maybe 4 or 5 movies.

We have a TPMS on our purchase list but, after your story, it's now at the top.

Don't forget to get two "extra" sensors - one for the Ollie spare tire and on for you tow vehicles spare tire (all the TPMS systems that I know of that are included on vehicles do not monitor the spare tire on the tow vehicle).

  3. Yes folks - I believe we have a winner!

Matt Duncan has sent me what I believe is all the material necessary for a quality print shop/service to reproduce these Oliver Hull Plaques.  There is the original artwork via a digital program (adobe illustrator), and instructions.

Anyone interested in receiving this should Private Message (PM) me with their email address and I will send them what Matt has given me.  There are a number of vendors on Etsy.com that produce these types of metal "business cards".

  4. Glad you guys are OK and that there wasn't any more damage than you had.

I believe that your experience was ( as you mention) partially your "fault" due to not turning on your TPMS.

However, the extent of your tire issues is very extraordinary.  I don't think that you can prepare for every possible situation while on the road - unless, perhaps, you are ScubaRx 😇.  Yes, checking your spare tire air pressure should be done more often OR simply get yourself another TPMS sensor for that spare and remember to turn that TPMS monitor on.  I also agree with the advice concerning the use of the onboard "leveling" jacks.

Your experience is yet another reason why we bought an Oliver and believe that everyone should consider before purchasing virtually any other brand.

I don't know how to do private message on here.

    Fairly simple -

left click on the person's avatar that you want the private message (PM) to go to.

That person's Forum personal page will come up on your screen - look for the "message" blue button in the center of the page (hint - it is in the photo if they have one).

left click on that "message" button and type your message.

Don't forget to left click on the "send" button at the bottom of the message page.

    You are done.

My question is should the cables be above or below the whale tail?

I've always placed my cables/chains below the whale tail.

My reasoning is that since the cables/chains are there as a safety measure in the event that the trailer (in some manner) comes unattached from the tow vehicle, the cables/chains will be the "last resort" of attachment to that tow vehicle.  Then, assuming that you have crossed the cables/chains the tongue should rest on those cables/chains as the trailer slows - this is particularly so assuming that the emergency brakes are applied on the trailer due to that ty switch becoming activated.  Meanwhile, the whale tail would serve as a wide surface area that those cables/chains could "catch".  Obviously, this crossing of the safety cables/chains has the effect of holding the hitch of the trailer off the ground so that the trailer hitch does not "dig" into the road thus possibly "flipping" the trailer.

Can you give coordinates of that location?

    Is it a boondocking site?

    Yes.

It is actually a decommissioned National Forest Service campground.  There are still a pit toilet and bear boxes there and there is non-potable water.  No garbage service nor electric or dump.  Note that the reason the Forest Service decommissioned this campground was due to bear activity some years ago.  In the past several years I've seen a couple of black bears wander through camp, and there has been Griz poo and tracks observed within a half mile.  I never walk around my campsite or anywhere in the camp without appropriate protection on my person.

  8. In this view of the Tetons I'm headed WAY up the Gros Ventre River.  Just north of the "major" (not) town of Kelly this was a place I could not resist to take the first pic.

However, if you are ever near Moran Junction look for Elk Ranch Road and head for GPS: 43.82592677366998, -110.50216569188429.  Here there are some old buildings and great views of the Tetons without being around 1,000 of your closest friends.  Also, note that there is plenty of room to turn an Oliver around here.

Finally - if you are in this area and have never eaten Dornan's Pizza (on the upper deck)(GPS:43.65754766116248, -110.71075629684981) , it is pretty good with a great view of both the Tetons and planes preparing to land at the Jackson airport.  While at Dornan's you can also get gas, beer, wine, fishing stuff and a small selection of grocery items.

p.s.  If you decide to go to Dornan's and you are towing the Ollie - a couple of suggestions-

    1.  Go early.  The pizza place opens at 11:30 am and there will be a line of 20 to 50 people at that time.

    2.  Do not park down in the "store/gas area" with the Ollie.  If you can pull down into that area so that you can turn around and head out.  Park on the side of the access road and walk the short distance down into the store area.

    p.p.s.

HERE is another review of Dornan's

  9. Here's another camping site just off the Chief Joseph Highway - and - this one's free.  No water or electric or dump but there is a pit toilet and fire ring.  Crandall Creek is at the bottom of the hill behind my Ollie and there are some nice fish in that creek.  GPS - 44.848679, -109.639157

p.s.  note the last pic - there are times when the wind comes straight off those mountains in the distance and it can blow fairly hard.
