2000 watt inverter surge amps?

Recommended Posts

Can anybody tell me the safe surge rating for this inverter? I am wondering if it would start up this 11 amp recip saw....

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Makita-11-Amp-Reciprocating-Saw-with-Case-JR3050T/100594827

I would much rather carry that and a use a heavy duty extension cord than carry my gas chain saw, with all the attendant mess, for possible use in cutting brush and small limbs from an undeveloped campsite in the woods, or for cutting a small downed tree on some remote forest road.

I wouldn't want to risk blowing it, I just wonder what starting load it is capable of, for occasional use only....

Thanks.

It has a 1500watt continuous load capacity, so that would be 1500÷120=12.5amps continuous load. But the inverter itself is designed to run on the 4 battery system, so having one of the 4 battery systems is the most important for the inverter to run properly. Running the sawzall will not be a problem.

Then on this link it says 2000w continuous, 3000w max so... Either way the sawzall will work :)

Thanks, that helps. An electric motor starting up draws way more than the running current, but I think that 3000 watt max rating should cover it.

I have ordered the 4 battery AGM option as well as solar.

I don't see myself cutting firewood with the saw, just a stray branch or two...

John,

If you are only interested in using it for power tools, you might consider battery operated tools with lithium ion batteries.  I cut up a fairly large tree with my battery sawzall and a very aggressive blade. It's amazing how much work they'll do on a battery.  Cheap too if you go with Ryobi from Home Depot.  They are surprisingly good and very cheap on sale.  Plus you could runs a drill and have no limit from the length of the power cord.  I charge mine from a cigarette lighter style inverter or the 120 volt plug in my Ram.  The small cigarette lighter inverters work well for charging laptops and phones too.

Meanwhile, I'm going to install an inverter in my Ollie too.  Mainly for some bigger loads, like the microwave. But I don't have a wiring diagram to see how Oliver integrates them into the trailers.  I wonder where I can get a wiring diagram?

John, I am becoming a fan of the newer 20 volt lithium tools but I hesitate to fill up my garage or trailer with lithium batteries, due to fire risk.

I already have that 110v saber saw, I would like to be able to use it from the Oliver's 110 volt inverter circuit.

John,

I don't have a wiring diagram although it's not really necessary for your project.  I would be happy to help you with it.  I installed one in mine about a year ago. You will be working with both 12 Volts DC and 120 Volts AC.  I believe Reed Lukens can hook you up with a wiring diagram.

You will have to download the pdf. The schematics are for the 2017. The older ones didn't come with them.

With the 4 battery system as it looks right now, you should be good for at least 5 days witn no sun. Even on cloudy days it charges back up before dark, it's been 2 months with no issues for us.

I haven't found how the Xantrex is installed in an Ollie.  Is it wired into the 120 volt plugs circuits, or do you only have the plugs on the inverter?  If it's wired into the existing, how is it automatically isolated from the shore tie power?

It seems like an inverter/charger would be more practical than having  separate units.

The inverter runs all of the outlets and AC throughout the trailer. The wiring diagram for what it is doesn't show it very well so I would call Oliver or if you want to get together, we are at home for another week working on the house, and have a few openings Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday if you want to pull mine apart and look at it. Then we're going to Yosemite on the 21st and we'll be gone till late May, when we have more work from a mud slide from the rains this year at our gold mine on the Yuba... We'll be renting a tractor at least for that one... It's 8ft farther in now after the last storm...

Thanks Reed.

We're down in the Bay Area so we won't see you till July at Bandon, I guess.   I'd love to spend a few days in Yosemite.  This working thing really eats into my time!

I'll see if I can get a schematic from Oliver and look it over.  I've done this before on my boat, but that was a few years ago and in that case I installed an inverter/charger which makes more sense to me than a separate converter and inverter.
