If I had known, we would have stopped by, Comanche. If no other reason than to see how such an ancient hull is holding up.

We are at the CO/KS border tonight. We got caught in a KS hail, rain, and wind storm. 64 is stabilized and remains attached to the tv, but we are rocking like a 20' sail boat in a gale. Hoping the hail did no damage up on the roof.

I think this is Dorothy's old house next to my camp.

After a few days of visiting family in beautiful Denver, we are hooked up again leaving for Wyoming in the early morning hours. Tetons, Jackson, a splurge into Idaho, and Yellowstone all on the coming week or so agenda. Though not camping, Denver has been good.

When you leave Jackson Hole and head up over the pass, if you're going that way, over the summit, then just a couple to a few miles down the hill, there is a short road on the left side. There used to be a house there and it's a great place to boondock.

You can't miss it if you're looking for it because it's the first road on the left past the summit. You can pull down it and park out of site of anyone. Then there's a nice trail to walk down also :)

Mike, Fine photos and looks like a great trip.

We were camping at Pokegama Dam Campground on the Mississippi River in Grand Rapids MN when we learned Grand Rapids is where Judy Garland (Frances Ethel Gumm) was born. Visited Judy Garland's home and museum there:

Thanks for the pic. We hope to make it up that way before we retire from active retirement.

Today is THE day we have been hoping for. We are out in our Ollie in an extended trip and finally in territory neither of us has visited before. Idaho is a brand new state for us. It is early morning and we all remain here through tonight before moving to Yellowstone tomorrow (more new territory). Anyway, Idaho is beautiful; and bacon is involved-Oliver, never before has a boy wanted more!

Moving day again as we head through West Yellowstone, Montana, back into WY, to camp inside the park for 3 nights.

FYI, there is lots and lots of available camping in the National Forests along Idaho #20. Weather is great this season, cool nights in the low 40's and beautiful days in the 70's.

Spotted a moose feeding her calf yesterday.

If you can get into Montana, do so. I absolutely love that state and would live there in a heartbeat if they could just eliminate the bitter cold in winter.

The SW corner is very cool, especially if you like ghost towns and isolation. Helena is good for a couple of days. The Beartooth Highway out of Yellowstone's lightly used NE entrance is jaw dropping cool, but monitor the weather for a warm day with dry roads to do the transit. It is still getting snowed on now and then....

If you are into classic firearms, go to the C Sharpes gun factory in Big Timber (central MT). Also the Cody firearm museum in WY. Whoa, that is amazing!

Tell us what you like to do. Hot springs, lookout towers, rough camping, fly fishing? Etc...

For specifics about MT, WA and ID, feel free to ask. Are you coming near Spokane? I have a big driveway....

Do you have an America The Beautiful Pass yet? It is a must have for Federal lands, including the wonderful Corps campgrounds along the waterways. It will save you a bundle of money, especially the Senior Pass.

Thanks for the tips, John

We cannot make Washington State this trip but have it and Oregan in mind for our next Western Adventure.

We do plan time in Montana this trip, at least five days, mostly up at Glacier Park. Elizabeth and I both have the senior pass. They save us a ton of money.

Idaho has been so gorgeous, I hate to leave. I am going to investigate the NE gate for leaving Yellowstone in a few days.  Btw, cycling is my fav thing. Mainly road, but trails are great too

will keep your drive in mind next trip.

Mike - The last campground in Yellowstone as you are headed toward Cooke City in the northeast corner of the Park is called Pebble Creek.  No reservations are accepted there, they do have potable water from a old style hand pump and pit toilets.  The hosts are very nice people (Ray and Darleen Rathmell from PA - tell them that Bill Jones from NC sent you and ask to see Ray's wildlife pictures).  The main reason to go out that way is to see the wildlife - buffalo, antelope, deer, elk, wolves and possibly black AND Griz bear.  Ray works closely with the Park Rangers and can tell you where to go to see the animal of your choice.  In addition, some of the Park's nicest trout streams are near (to include Pebble Creek itself) if that is your thing and even though the road is only two lane, there is usually less traffic on it so you can get in a good ride if you have the time.  If you do go out that way be sure to have enough provisions on board in that Cooke City does not really have too much to offer and the next nearest towns are either Red Lodge (to the northeast) or Cody (to the southeast).  Anyway you go it is really a special place.  While in Yellowstone plan to do the major tourist places either early or late in order to avoid the crowds and the traffic.  Have fun!  I'm jealous.  Bill

Difficult posting or reading right now. We have zero co nectivity inside Yellowstone with at&t. Verizon customers seem to do fine.

Life is good. We are in Cody right now, having left the park to reprovision and check voicemails.

Can't believe the beauty of this land. Yellowstone Lake is beyond words. Wildlife is everywhere.

Cycling is great  even in Cody my connection is weak, so am limiting upload to a couple of pics  (second try)

Mike - it must be that very same tatanka crossing Fishing bridge!  I've got a similar shot except my wife and I were looking over the bridge rail at the fish.  When we turned around there he was in that same spot with nothing between us but that little "telephone pole" guard rail.  6nwk25amibah2zsvo99nfwqitd5evdnr.jpg.18eb63fe673d4876a8f6831887a0ba09.jpg

We DO have that interagency senior pass and use it often. Best $10 I ever spent.

Sadly, we left Yellowstone this morning. We are overnighting in nowhere Montana planning to hit the Glacier National Park sometime tomorrow.

Most of the later pics at Yellowstone were beyond what this phone can do  we did see hundreds of bison, dozens of elk, five mountain goats and two black bears  we missed the wolves somehow

here is a pic from the east entrance

Mike & Elizabeth - be a bit more careful of the bears in Glacier.  In my experience, there seems to be more of them or just possibly there are less people in the places I hike/fish.  A neighbor of mine was on site during a griz attack several years ago.  The momma bear came at a father - daughter from the uphill side when she realized that her cubs were on the downhill side with humans in the middle.  The father - daughter never realized that there were any bears there until it was too late (both survived as did all three bears).  Bear spray is a good thing.

Bear spray is a good thing. Bill

I strongly second this. Plus it is legal to transport into western Canada, if declared at your crossing.

The odds of even seeing a griz are very very low, but you do not want to be defenseless if the worst should happen. A handgun is legal in Glacier if you have a valid pistol permit, but shooting a bear in a National Park brings you untold legal grief....That does't stop me from carrying a big revolver.

A mountain biker (a Park employee) was killed there by a bear last year, but in his case he came barreling around a blind turn on the wooded trail, right into the bear. You can hardly blame the bear for what happened next.

Enjoy Glacier. It is a beautiful place.

Thanks for the suggestion on Bear Spray. I will look for some at the outfitter. It occurs to me that it might prove to be a good non lethal defense weapon at the Ollie door some night

We are relaxed now using wifi for likely the last time in several days. We have 3 nights at Glacier then hope to move up into Alberta, turn right to Sach, then right again into the Dakotas.

Will post comments and pics as I can.

Mike - if it is legal to do so WalMart just might have the bear spray at a price that is lower than an outfitter.  Also, there are some Parks and/or places just outside the Parks that actually "rent" bear spray.  Note that most sprays have a three years "life" to them and all that I've purchased over the years have an expiration date on them.  So, be sure that you get spray that is "fresh".

Well, well, we survived Glacier unscathed. Closest we got to a grizzly was on one of the trails off Going to the Sun Rd. A smallish female (if any griz is small), she was about 75 feet away rooting in the ground for something.

We camped in the park with no hookups at all. The solar array performed admirably, despite one day of mostly clouds and late afternoon storms.

We are in Saskatchewan tonight, turning the corner South tomorrow. Not sure where we are going, but will start with the Dakotas.
