EU 3000i

Greetings All,

Does anyone know if an EU 3000I by Honda will fit in the tongue box without mods?  Its weight is about the max allowable in the tongue box, say about 150 lbs.

I can't comment from experience but I expect it will fit, but the EU3000i Handi version has a smaller motor and a little smaller footprint, smaller tank and is way lighter. That would be my personal choice, is there a reason you want the larger one? Home backup?

They are both very expensive, have you considered the Yamaha 2400? It's a great unit and very capable.

I have both.  Just not an EZ start because I was penny wise and pound foolish so I need the Honda to run the AC w/o hiccups.  Installing the Micro Air will void the warranty I think.  I have a locking mount for the Honda in my truck, so if I wanted to camp/atv ride it would be necessary to put the atv in my truck and the generator in the trailer tray.  After backing out the atv the genset could be locked down in my truck.  I can lift the Honda but can't position it in the box to check the fit.  My preliminary measurements tell me it will be close as can be.

You have both what? Both Hondas? If you are carrying the bigger one, that is a darned heavy unit to be horsing around that much. You don’t really need it all the time in the Ollie’s tray? I am a little confused, can you not just leave it on the ground when unloading or loading the ATV?

You could trade that heavy guy in on a lighter one. I am older and not especially strong and my 80 pound Yamaha 2400 (fueled) is about as heavy as I would choose to move very often. I honestly couldn’t begin to get a 150 pound one in and out of a truck or basket by myself without injury. You must be pretty fit.

I have both the Honda and the Yamaha.  I can sling the Yamaha around where I want it but the Honda is a different story, would need help going from ground to truck or trailer.  I keep it on a utility cart and that makes it easy to get into my truck.  Used to powerlift, and my girlfriend is a bodybuilder, but she's almost maxed out with one side of the Honda and probably couldn't lower it slowly into the basket on the Oliver to check the fit.  Wish I had gotten the Micro Air.  Then the Yamaha plus other goodies would fit in the basket, and the Yamaha would run the AC easily.

You live and learn.

Our yamaha 3000 stays at home for power outages. The lighter genset is the traveler. May upgrade from the honda 1000 someday, but, our plan has always been to move on if the weather is too hot or too rainy...

Many of us have to use what we have.  We are unable or unwilling to buy a new piece of equipment because it's lighter or more fancy.  I love my EF3000iSEB Yamaha.  Yea, it is heavy and it was expensive (sounds like all the other Fiberglass Trailer Owners describing our Olivers) but it's what I've got.  It never fails to crank (it's 10+ years old) and it will run the entire trailer.  I don't have or need the EasyStart system.  It's ridden on the tongue of both our Olivers these past 11 years and I only take it out of the basket to service it.  With a full tank of fuel it weighs over 175 lb.  I couldn't begin to lift it so I installed a lift in the roof of the garage the Oliver lives in when it is (rarely) not on the road.  The lift also serves to remove and replace the propane tanks for filling and the 250 lb tool box that rides in the truck when we travel.

At first look I did a double take, "you store the gen set on the roof". I need me one of them "portable lift system", but I digress. Nice home set up.

I'm holding out on a gen set - If I need AC I'm either in the wrong place, or I'm at a spot with shore power. But again, seems I've got everything else, but the sink and a gen set.....

Greetings All,

According to Honda specs:  The EU3000IS has a footprint of 25.9 x 17.6 which I don't believe will fit within the basket due to the front of the basket having angled, front corners.  Even the EU3000I (Handi) is 24.5 x 14.9 which I think again is too large.  I was debating the same thing for our Ollie but research is showing it won't work without mods.  Can't fit two EU2200i models side-by-side in there either.

I am considering the EU3000is because it has a 3.4 gallon fuel tank and therefore has over twice the run time as the EU2200i.

Not exactly... the 3000 yamaha we own has a bigger tank, but our 1000 with a tiny tank runs longer. Because it uses less fuel, but produces less energy.

Have you looked at an auxiliary tank for a smaller genset? Like the honda 2200, or the yamaha?

Our Yamaha EF3000iSEB's footprint is 26.8" x 17.5" and it fits quite nicely in the box with the angled corners.  It actually has about an inch clearance on either end and the back with about three inches in front.

According to Honda specs, the run time on the EU2200is is 3.2 hrs @rated load, and 8.1 hrs at 1/4 load.  The run time on the EU3000is is 7.1 hrs @ rated load, and 20.0 hrs @ 1/4 load.  Not saying one is more efficient than the other but the larger fuel tank on the 3000 does mean less stopping to refill.  On the down side, it's heavy as heck.

Hobo, you're going to attend the rally, right?

You'll get the opportunity there to see Steve's big Yamaha, and possibly see and talk with others with the Honda 2200s and /or Yama 2400 and easystart mod on the ac .

Besides the little Honda 1000 that we carry for recharging, we also have a Yamaha 3000 like Steve's, but we only use it at home for power outages . It's a really great genset, and very quiet for its size. After Hurricane Irma blew through, we used the 3000 for a week to power our home refrigerator and some lights, ceiling fans, and outlets, and also our neighbor's refrigerator, plus a few lights and fans for them. It ran overnight on a full tank, which is about the same size tank as the comparable Honda. Not sure how that use compares to an Ollie's ac for power consumption. My point above was that the more power our generator can give, the more likely we are to use more power, and, consequently, more fuel.

Fwiw, if we ever decided to boondock where we actually needed ac, I think we'd look at the Honda 2200, at 50some pounds, or the Yamaha 2400, at around 75. We can manage lifting either of those out of the truck bed, and both brands have given us solid performance for many years. The heft of that 3000 is just too much (for us), for camping. Fortunately, it has wheels for moving it around the garage and yard. :)

For where and when we camp, the easily portable Honda 1000 has been perfect for recharging batteries if we hit a string of inclement days.

Yes, looking forward to seeing the various gen sets and talking to the owners.  I don't plan on purchasing anything until after the rally.

We actually attended last year (rented a cabin) in anticipation of taking delivery this  May but not having been in the RV business (yet), didn't know all the right questions to ask.  Really looking forward to this year's event when we actually have our trailer on hand.

Sure wish John D. from Washington was there.  I would LOVE to see all the mods he's done to his trailer too.

Yes, I can see that now.  What was throwing me off was the Oliver dimension of 16 3/4" (depth) up to the angle.  However, since the basket width is 28" and the gen set is less than that,  there is more front to back depth available than I was envisioning.  Thanks for the input.  Let's me think about the larger generator as an option.

We’ve never regretted buying the larger generator. I’m all about overkill and it never fails to supply what power we need. Yeah, it’s heavy, but I have an overhead hoist to remove and replace all the stuff I can’t, or don’t choose, to manage alone (generator, tool box in truck and propane tanks.
