Atwood Propane Alarm

Recommended Posts

1. What LP/CO detector is Oliver putting in recent builds?
2. For those that have recently replaced the original Atwood unit with another Atwood unit, did you use the OEM unit, part number 36636, or the retail unit, part number 36681? And what was the date of manufacture on the back of the detector?

FYI, I added an ON/ OFF switch to my detector, partly in case of nuisance alarms, which hardly every happen, but mainly to eliminate the phantom electrical draw. A side benefit is that it should keep working a lot longer, maybe, perhaps. I flag the compartment when it is switched off, I can’t emphasize enough how critical it is to turn it on and test it before every trip.

@John E DaviesIs that your original detector? It’s interesting to note that you have Hull number 218 and your detector was manufactured on March 15, 2016. I have hull number 313 and my detector’s date of manufacture is January 25, 2015.

Yes, that is original. In your shoes I would be a little irritated that they installed an old unit. I bet Oliver does not rotate stock religiously. You put new inventory on the back of the shelf! However, I don’t think sitting in a sealed box will hurt the life span measurably, unless they keep these in a factory location near hull production, where there is a lot of airborne chemicals around….. It is exposure to some solvents that degrades or wrecks the sensor.

The actual 7 year service life before it goes into its crippled “end of life”  mode is determined by how long it stays powered on, which is why I think killing power to it routinely will perhaps make it function well for a longer time period. It does take three minutes to “boot up” when you turn it on each time. The red light flashes, then goes out after it warms up.

I agree with John.

When Oliver has it in stock, it should not effect the life span of the unit. The sensor life (which is what we are talking about) is based on when it is activated and actually sniffing the air.

Our 2020 Oliver had a detector with a born on date of 2015, and it was giving numerous false alarms, so I opened a ticket and Jason sent me a new one that had a born on date of 2018, which he said is more in line with what it should be.  So far so good with the new one.

I don't know the "born on date" of the LP/CO monitor in our previous Leisure Travel Van, but the LTV was build in 2016.  We had several false alarms before LTV replaced it with a new one.  Seems that in 2016, there was a batch of defective Atwood monitors.  Perhaps your 2015 model was one of these.  Good thing is, these are inexpensive to replace and fairly easy to install.

I read on the internet (so it has to be true😜) that the Atwood LP/CO detectors aren’t being made anymore so I asked Jason Essary what was being installed in new Olivers. He said they are using RV Safe Alarms now.

Hmm, $58 on Amazon, and it uses an adapter plate to cover the big square hole. Five years to end of life, not seven. BTW 2 wire vs 3 wire, the third wire is not used, that is an option for a second battery (backup), the two red wires are connected to each other in (my) Ollie.

  • 1 year later...

My Atwood 36681 RV CM/PL detector has finally failed (faulted) in #110.  Looks like I can get the same model from a couple places, from $70 to $120 (eTrailer).  I trust eTrailer, not sure about Panther RV Products.  https://pantherrvproducts.com/36681/

Also from https://www.rvpartscountry.com/rv-atwood-dual-lp-co-alarm.html

Does anyone have another reputable place to find a white replacement.  Black is much cheaper (stupid).

I love the on/off switch idea @John E Davies, thanks!

Thanks,

Chris

I have had very good success with both of these companies.  And I vote for saving money, that way you’ll have some to waste later😁

It depends on whether you consider ebay reputable.  I have purchased from sellers with multiple 100% positive ratings before, with good results.

The $66 price tag would interest me, compared to $124 from etrailer:

I agree!  With Amazon’s supply chain and delivery issues during and post Covid 19, I always go to EBay for a price check.  As an example, I purchased a Victron Cerbo GX last December for $80 less than Amazon, with free shipping.  Amazon is very easy to do business with, as long as you don’t need to talk with them.  But I often save money at EBay.

Well, I put the new CO detector in, and for being the much less expensive color, it totally matches my #110 setup; maybe even better than the white one.

Sure - but - it will only react to the black propane molecules! 😇
