Why do you think chains are better than cables? I have been pleased with the 'coiled' cables as they never drag the ground and stretched in tight turns. I have other trailers with chains and always adjusting so they don't drag. Are chains stronger?

This was a thread about chains vs cables a few months ago. As is to all its a personal choice. I thought it interesting that Oliver made the change.

We we got our new Elite II last year the cables were to first thing to go. It's not that they don't work, but the hassle of dealing with them was like trying to handle an Anaconda snake, if you know what I mean.

Good morning guys.

Yes the state of Tennessee now requires that any trailer manufactured in TN have safety chains.  Thus, the switch back to chains.

??? I don’t find the cables to be a problem, I do like how they stay off the ground and don’t rattle. I do not like how you cannot crisscross them under the ball. What especially was the issue with your cables?

Thanks.

It would be interesting to see how that regulation came about.  Things like this usually don't just come about out of thin air.  I like the cables.  they hold up the whale tail on my Andersen.  Do you think some chain manufacturer in Tennessee put a bug in some politicians ear?

I like the cables, chains are fine also - have them on all my other trailers - but I'm not changing them out just cause.

I was looking at the new owners photos taking delivery. I noticed that Oliver went back to break away chain’s instead of cables. If so, good change out,

What cables are these?  How do you like everything else thus far?

The chains/cables being discussed here are designed to be able to keep the tow vehicle and trailer attached to each other in the event of some type of failure of the hitch system (i.e. the hitch receiver, the hitch itself, the bulldog coupler assembly, the front of the frame of the trailer, etc.)  This is why these are sometimes referred to as "safety chains/cables".

On your tow vehicle - normally to the right and left of the actual hitch receiver - there will be a hole or slot that is large enough for a chain or hook/clip to fit through.  The ends of the safety chains/cables normally have a hook on the end that is then "hooked" to this hole/slot.  Perhaps if you viewed this YouTube video you'd understand better:

John, I think for me it was just the easy of use over the cables, probably more of a hands on thing then anything else. That crisscross thing was probably my biggest dislike, plus the coiling action just seemed to be hassle to deal with. I guess I have always had chains on every trailer I've owned regardless of what kind it was, so at my old age why change now. Yes, I don't leave my chains on the ground, I just purchased some "S" hooks to hang the chain.
