Requesting Ideas - Camping NE of Hohenwald

My wife and I will pick up our trailer at the end of June and we would appreciate feedback from anyone that has camped northeast of Hohenwald.  Our plan is to stay in the general area of OTT for around a week before we meander back home to the northeast.  We will probably stay in DAVID Crockett SP for several days and do the appropriate shakedown and learning exercise before we depart.  Our total trip length could be around a month.

A combination of boondocking and campgrounds is our plan.  Based on what I'm reading about how challenging it will be to make reservations, we need to make ours soon or plan to do a lot of boondocking.

We like quiet, off the beaten path types of places.  Not into shopping, traffic or crowds.  If there are camping spots where there are clean bodies of water for swimming and fishing, we'd likely put those on our list.  Golf and mountain biking too.

Thanks for any advice!

While not exactly northeast of town - don't forget about Merewether Lewis Campground at:

35.52354514962594, -87.45430386645957

There is water available here at the restroom but no electric or dump.  It is very quiet and the old Trace is near.

Obviously there is also the "old" Oliver sale office where both water and electric are available, but, there is a little highway noise:

Not sure if it is NE enough but we stayed at Douthat State Park in VA . Great hiking, more than one campground area. We didn't see as much of it as we wanted, it is on our list to return to. Paula

Just read about this park.  Looks perfect.  Have added it as one of our stops.  Thanks Paula...

Fall creek falls is about 2.5 hours from Hohenwald. It's one of the Tennessee resort campgrounds.  Beautiful trails. Golf course. Amphitheater.

With over 200 campsites, it's not the quiet, unknown spot, though.

Douthat State Park in VA, is an outstanding campground; we have reservations for a few day in May.  There are several campgrounds associated with this park, we like the Whispering Pines it only has 22 sites and they are very large all back in sites with water and electric plus a double dump station when leaving.  You will need reservations, not much chance of getting a site in Whispering Pines without reservations.

For areas in TN I would recommend Montgomery Bell and Cumberland Mountain State Parks, both have golf courses. For something more off the beaten path Pickett S.P. and the Big South Fork NRRA (NPS park) are located northeast of Hohenwald on the Cumberland Plateau.

If you want to check out the Nashville area, the following is a great spot to stay for a few nights, it is on the shore of a lake (busy boat traffic during the day, quiet at night) and really close to east Nashville. Check out the city zoo, it is quite nice, and the most excellent Lane Motor Museum. Both are a short drive away. The museum has room in back for an Ollie, I parked “Mouse”  there for half a day. The zoo, nope. Nashville drivers drive fast and are quite aggressive, stay off the freeways and you will be fine.

Anderson Road Campground, J Percy Priest Reservoir

We spent two nights in Henry Horton SP while our 2006 Ram Cummins was getting an unexpected complete hydraulic system transplant ($4000!) in nearby Columbia. HH seemed very nice, fairly laid back and quiet compared to Fall Creek Falls, which is a complete madhouse in summer.

If you do decide to stay there, be sure to hike back to Fall Creek Falls itself, it is pretty impressive for an East Coast waterfall 😬. Just be sure to approach the Park from the southwest (Hwy 284) not from the northwest (through Spencer), that Hwy 30 is a steep twisty nightmare with a trailer. It sure is fun in a sports car....

Anderson Rd. campground looks like it's pretty close to the airport,  and fairly close to a lot of interesting spots: the new Opryland (25 minutes?), Gaylord hotel (awesome gardens, indoor, and amazing Christmas decorations from November on), and, of course, the reservoir.

There used to be a restaurant not far away (Darfon's) with excellent food, if you don't want to venture into the city.

Traffic can be problematic on that section of the freeway closeby from 4 to 6 or 7.  But, it's still not far from the fun in downtown Nashville,  which we love. Wander from bar to bar, and enjoy music of all types. It's a wonderful town. Lots of parking for a truck in downtown lots, just a few blocks from the fun.
