Desert rodents will chew the insulation off your under-hood wiring at night. Some brands of vehicle are more attractive than others.

I'll see your desert rodent and raise you a bull moose or elk during the rut in Fall plus a griz in Spring, Summer and Fall.😅

Saw this guy last year in the Az outback.  Arizona Black Rattlesnake. Fairly docile but twice as much venom as a diamondback rattlesnake. First one I've seen and I've been hiking in the west for over 30 years.

Ok, Bug Tip 1 - the side lights on the trailer will attract bugs right to your door so unless you want to spend a romantic evening hunting down little flying things in the trailer, use a lantern located away from the door to light up your campsite instead.

Bug Tip 2 - some of the new LED flashlights have a UV setting, so you can use it to inspect your camp for scorpions. 🦂 🦂 🦂

Bug Tip 3 - clam tents seem like a pretty popular choice for owners who want to camp in buggy weather but still be outside

Even if you replace the screens in your Oliver with something like THIS, really small critters will still find a way in.  There are many of THESE zappers/lanterns on the market and the two that I have really do work - as long as you only have them on with no other lights on inside.

Another tip is to turn on those "exterior courtesy lights" on the Oliver before stepping outside.  Twice now I've had a snake lounging on that nice warm paved area just at the bottom of the Ollie steps 😬 (both were harmless black snakes but I'm sure glad I saw them).

And - since you asked for "nature stuff" -

learn how to recognize western poison ivy.  It does look slightly different than the eastern variety - see THIS - in any case - "leaves of three, let it be".

Bugs, ivy, things in nature - don't compare to the real threat -  Humans!

watch your 6 - they cannot be trusted to behave in any rational manner.

A bull moose is  preferable.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just spent five days at the Prairie Creek COE campground on Beaver Lake in Rogers, AR. Ticks (Lone Star) were falling out of the trees. Would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it.
