Firefly season

Last year we had a short discussion about what time of the year do the fireflies come out in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Well, within the next three weeks or so some 20 varieties of fireflies will begin to do their annual ritual and this includes the "blue" fireflies that are only know to exist in very limited ranges and the synchronous fireflies that are "famous" in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park (June 1-8 and it takes a lottery ticket to get to see these which are available at Recreation.gov from today through May 3rd).

Good luck on getting a ticket!

I love spring in western North Carolina.

We see the fireflies,  and the early flowers.

My photos from today. New species, in the drive. Some type of tiny iris. So pretty.

It is approaching that time - I'll spend more time cleaning the grill and front end of the truck - than the other 3/4 of the vehicle. Ollie becomes a bug magnet - FF be darned.

It is a bugs life...

Technically, those are:

Iris kristata (crested dwarf iris) - at least that is what my wife says.  I simply call them blue flowers.

Thanks, Bill, (and your wife) for the info.

First year we've seen this in this spot. Sometimes,  up the mountain aways. I've always loved irises. I hope they'll spread into a bigger patch. We seem to see different wildflowers every year.

These little ones (I think they're a type of violet) seem to be early spring bloomers. Only last until the trees are fully leafed out.

Violet - common blue (Viola papilionacea)

Or, I call it another blue flower.😁

Sorry about the hijack. I'll see if I can repay you with a firefly photo, tonight.
