Ram eco diesel

Following this thread. Thinking of adding a Tahoe with the diesel option in the near future.  Might make a pretty decent towing rig as well. However, one thing I’ve noticed with the reviews online is the mpg falls a bunch when towing a load like from 26 to 12 vs a gas engine going from 20 to 11 ish. I would have thought the diesel would do really well pulling a load and mpg drop off would be minimal.

I tow my LE 2 with a RAM 1500, 5.7 liter Hemi engine. The RAM tows the Ollie with no problem. When not towing (in the summer) I get around 18 mpg on the open road. When towing the Ollie, mileage drops to around 13 mpg.

I towed our LE 2 with a 2016 Ram 1500 5.7L for 3+ years with no problem.  Replaced it with a 2020 Ram Rebel, same engine for another year.  Mileage towing was anywhere from 11 to 15 depending on terrain.  The 5.7L does need to wind up a bit on steep or long inclines.  It’s a comfortable truck.  Mike

We have a 2015 RAM 1500 eco diesel and I love it. Pulls the Ollie great. Get about 16 mpg overall with the trailer. I have gotten as high as 27 mpg on long highways trips without pulling. But I think the 2   re-flashes of tranny and EGR system  for an emissions settlement may have dinged the mileage a tad. With a diesel, it just feels like you are not straining too much.

I have a 2020 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel, which I purchased in order to tow our LE2 (delivery date 9/16/21). I will post towing information once we return to Northern California from collecting our Ollie.

Since purchasing it in November 2020, I've averaged 24 MPG around town, and average 30 MPG with consistent freeway driving. On a recent (not towing) trip from Vancouver, WA to Redding, CA, the truck got 30.5 MPG going the posted speed limits, despite quite a few steep passes along Hwy. 5.

I’m the outcast with a 2019 Ford PowerStroke 3.0L.  I’m interested in how it would tow an OTT.  It pulls our 6,000# stick-built with no issues, and gets about 15-16mpg without issue.  I can only imagine the svelte hips of an Ollie would only enhance the economy, not to mention reduce sway substantially.

If you're satisfied with the towing experiences you've had with a 6000# SOB, then I suspect you'll be OK pulling an Oliver.

This looks like a good match for the Elite II, excellent towing and cargo capacity.

"Outcast"?

I've had two 3.5 liter Ford Ecoboost F-150's and nary an issue with either of them towing my Elite II.  Your truck will have zero problems towing it.

We have a 2020 RAM EcoDiesel with the tow package, 3.92 axle ratio. On our trip home to Northern California after taking delivery of our LE2 in September, the fuel mileage ranged from 16 MPG in hilly terrain with headwinds, to as much as 20 MPG at 65 MPH during level freeway driving.

I tow my 2019 Oliver Elite II with a 2019 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.7 Hemi and the stock rear end gears and it pulls great. When I went to purchase my new Ram the 3.0 Eco Diesel was not available at that time, but the dealer did have three 2018's left overs in stock. I might have looked at them, but the new 2019 Ram was such a better all around truck that I didn't really give it much thought. Now three years down the road with the 5.7 Hemi the 3.0 Eco Diesel just wouldn't be my choice today if I were to get another tow vehicle, which with 18,000 miles on the 2019 Ram I probably won't be doing for a few years. So for myself I have never been able to put the figures down on paper and see that it would workout for me, but it you can make the 3.0 figures work for you, then go for it. I will say one thing here, I'm only going to drive my vehicles to around 50,000 miles and then trade them off for something else, why, because I can and I like new toys.
