Tow Vehicle - Ladies' Choice

Hi John and Rivernerd,

The payload is 2465, correct?. The stats you posted John are for a regular titan but I have the titan XD. I believe my tow capacity is over 10,000. The XD is in between a half ton and a three-quarter. I’ve been exchanging messages with another oliver owner who has an XD And hasn’t found including the Anderson necessary. I appreciate the comments and will look into this further.

Here is the sticker.

Hi John and Rivernerd,

I am attaching the sticker. Please note I have the Titan XD and the stats posted are for the regular Titan. The XD is kind of in between a half ton and three-quarter. I think my payload is 2465, correct? And I have been messaging with another Oliver owner who uses the XD and has found no need for the Anderson hitch. If it’s required I will of course use it but I’m not sure it is. Of course I could be off the mark and I know you all have a million times more experience on this than me. So I appreciate the feedback!

Thanks Chris! Looks like I still need one 🙂 and I now understand the difference between the WDH and sway control:)

There should be another sticker that looks like this with the statement “The combined weight of cargo and occupants should never exceed…..”.  That is your payload limit.  And the tongue weight of the trailer counts toward that payload number.  An Elite II typically has a tongue weight of 500 to 600 lbs. so that plus two adults gets you to 1,000 pounds of payload real quick, and then start adding any camping gear, a bed liner, bed cover or cap, etc.

Your GVWR is 8,750.  You need the empty weight of your truck as optioned to subtract from that number. I think you made a great choice for the TV.  Larger brakes, higher payload, etc. Also the color will match perfectly with your new Oliver!

Looks like payload is about 2K. Thanks again Chris! It is quite a vehicle And rides and drives like a dream.

The sticker you posted previously does show the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight rating) of  8750 pounds. That is the heaviest it can ever legally weigh. If you were to weigh the truck with full gas tank and no cargo on a commercial scale and subtract it from that number, that figure is what you have left for payload. That method takes into account any aftermarket stuff a previous owner might have added, like a really heavy rubber bedliner (100 pounds) or heavy offroad accessories like steel bumpers and skidplates, up to 500 pounds 😳. The factory payload sticker represents how the truck left the factory, before a dealer or an owner started adding stuff to it.

Keep in mind, if you want to increase the payload a little you can remove stuff, for example, take out the rear seats and install a cargo platform.

That’s a pretty good payload number for carrying any reasonable amount of camping gear, etc.

The other question is whether the truck came equipped with the factory trailer brake controller.   You should have something on the dashboard that looks like this photo for the trailer brake controller.   The two paddles are to manually apply only the trailer brakes if needed, and the plus/minus buttons are for setting the trailer brake gain control to adjust how hard or easy the trailer brakes are applied when you hit your brake pedal in the truck.

You can join the Nissan owners portal, enter your truck VIN and you can see all sorts of derails about its build. I don’t know if it lists every option, some sites do that. You can check for service history, service bulletins and recalls, but the latter “should” have already been done.

One more suggestion, buy a simple 7500 pound rated dead weight ball mount for your receiver, which I think is 2”, choose a “drop” in inches that will put the top of the ball at about 18” off the ground. That is pretty standard for most rental trailers. Buy a 2” ball, with a similar rating, and go rent a U-Haul trailer, or better yet, a small travel trailer, less than 5000 pounds, and get to know your Titan long, LONG before you pick up your Ollie.

You can then use the mount as a spare to move your Ollie a short distance if you don’t want to hook up the Andersen. I use one to pull the trailer out of the RV bay to wash it, plus for an occasional rental trailer for moving stuff.

Another spec will confirm you need the Andersen WDH.   See the table John Davies posted earlier.   It states the Maximum Tongue Weight capacity for a Titan XD  hitch is 500lbs (no WDH).   Your vehicle  might be different, but probably not.  That spec is not on the door stickers, it may be in your owners manual.     The Oliver LE2 Tongue Weight is 490 lbs, empty & parked, without the front basket.   Therefore, you will likely be over capacity without the Andersen WDH.  If you are ever involved in a crash (your fault or not) your insurance contract could be voided, because by law you must adhere to OEM towing specifications.

Great idea John! That’s why I got the truck some months before the trailer. I knew I would need to get used to it. Very good advice 🙂

Jumping in late here. The Andersen hitch weighs 66 pounds and will have to be subtracted from your cargo carrying capacity.

Not a problem - I have nearly 2k payload with the Titan XD, so I'm feeling ok with that, and thank you for thinking about it. I just put a tonneau on my TV and will be adding that as well.
