Carbon monoxide detector failed

Recommended Posts

I have a call into Mike, but in the meantime one of you all may know the answer.  My carbon monixide detector has failed.  I have tried repeatedly to reset and get the beeping every 30 seconds.  It went bad on the way home from Montana.  I just picked it up to go on a road trip and of course it is still beeping.  I called the manufactuer as listed in the Oliver manual and was advised it is no longer made or available.  I just want to turn if off.  There is nothing in the manual about turning it off, only installation instructions and testing.  I look at the fuses and don't think it has a dedicated fuse.  Any ideas how to turn if off?  I have a portable detector that I will be using.  I just cannot tolerate that beeping every 30 seconds 24 hours a day.  Thank you in advance.

Ours did that on a long trip once in the middle of the night.  I don’t have a lot of patience at 3:00am.  I lifted the dinette seat and cut the wires.  Problem solved.  I ordered a new on the next day from Amazon and it was waiting for us when we got home.  I don’t recommend going too long without one, but if it’s broke, it’s broke.  Fortunately there are also Camping Worlds and other RV repair places all around.  Mike

If you’re referring to the LP/ CO detector under the dinette there is a 1 amp fuse located under the street side bunk. At least there is in mine.  Pull that fuse and put it where you can find it later.

@cmdmom286, you have an Elite? What year?

Is it the upper alarm thats beeping, or the one under the dinette?

We purchased ours in March of 2020. Ours went bad last month. I contacted Oliver and was directed to file a warranty claim with Dometic. I got the new one in this week and will install tomorrow.

Thank you all.  Mike did call back and I cut the wires.  How hard is it to install a new one?

As I recall, it screws in from the front.  Wires pass through to reconnect where you cut.  You can add a fuse there if you want to.  Mike

I just replaced the one in our new older trailer with a alternate brand.  The one used in the 2017 Oliver was hard to find (Atwood) and about 40% higher in price.   The installation was easy enough as one of the two supplied faceplates covered the existing hole and only required a pilot hole for the new screws.   Below is the link to the one I installed.   No more alarms in the middle of the night!

I didn’t want to drill any holes so I used an 1/8 inch chainsaw file to make a small notch on each side of the existing hole

I enlarged the existing holes on the large bezel provided in the box

and used the small bezel provided as a backing plate for 2 (#6 I think) flat head SS screws inserted into the 2 enlarged holes and through the notches

and used 22-18 ga butt splices to attach the wires since the old monitor had 18 ga wires and the new one has 22 ga wires

Pretty sure they have a 5 year shelf life.  2017 / 2018 trailers are pretty close to done.   We replaced ours last year.

  • 2 weeks later...

We have an 2018 Oliver Elite 2. Our Atwood CO/propane gas detector is out of date; we are attempting to replace with a Safe Universal CO/propane gas detector. The old Atwood has 3 wires, 2 red and 1 black. The new Safe detector has 2 wires, one red 1 black. Testing the wires in the Oliver that supply power to the detector we determined that both red wires are hot, and that they can power the new detector to function.

How would we wire the new detector? Unsure why the Oliver has 2 hot wires feeding the detector. I don't think it matters, but when we put in new lithium batteries, we disabled the wire that charges the batteries through the tow vehicle.

Thanks

David

@thompsonkd:  Go back further (on the Oliver side) into the wire loom - you'll see that there's a single red wire (+12vDC)...  You'll need to connect that red wire to the RV Safe detector - suggest adding an "on/off" switch since you'll be in there anyway...

Thanks Max Burner! Oliver actually called us about this(after we put in a service ticket) and told us the same thing. Service suggested either wire nutting one positive or going into the loom to find the single positive wire and connecting that. Appreciate your help.

Max Burner is correct.

I replaced mine this fall (it had a 2017 mfg date on it) before it went bad. Followed the wires back toward the source and  found one red and 1 black wire. I also found a fuse holder in the line. I added a switch in case of futher alarms/problems, but the fuse could be pulled instead of adding a switch.

Good idea adding an inline 1amp fuse...  We also put a small piece of Scotch Tape over the REALLY BRIGHT green LED - it fully illuminates the front of the rig at night!
