Rock Guards

How many of you have rock guards on your tow vehicle?

We live on a gravel rod, and I expect we will travel on gravel in our search for adventure.

I have this now.  Is that enough?

Or, do I need something more robust like this?

I have the Rock Tamers.   After 4 years they’ve worked well to prevent any rock dings on the front of our Ollie.  The standard truck mud flaps just behind the rear wheels don’t stop rocks from being thrown rearward towards the trailer

I too have the Rock Tamers like Frank C and concur with his comments.  Patriot has a different brand that looks relatively good.

Search around and find the ones that work for you.

I use Rock Stoppers by https://www.livelymachine.com for a custom cleaner closer to the rear wheel fit and finish. These are Super Duty specific fit. I will never pull our Ollie with out them, they work great.

Best of luck in your choice!

FYI your picture didn’t work, please try again, and tell us your trailer model, hull number and tow vehicle, your location is optional but helpful.

I strongly disagree with the other replies (and I have for seven years). If you plan on driving a lot of graded gravel, like loooong western ranch or farm roads, any flaps that reach close to the ground will be a liability. If you drive dead slow they will be acceptable, if you want to drive at 25 to 40 mph, they will hit the road at any dip and throw up a rooster tail of stones, which is very bad. You will also get rocks bouncing back onto your tow vehicle off the trailer and that can break a rear window or tail light and ding paint.

You need to accept that some damage is going to occur, or add a protective film to the front of the trailer and your TV. How much gravel driving do you anticipate and where? There is a perfect solution but it will require custom work.

https://olivertraveltrailers.com/forums/topic/2504-how-to-stone-stomper-gravel-guard/

That will do a perfect job in protecting the front of the Ollie, but it directs all the stone “carnage” underneath, so you also need to add rubber flaps under the trailer, in front of the suspension, entry door and black tank port, and after the rear tires, to knock down those stones.

https://olivertraveltrailers.com/forums/topic/2505-how-to-subframe-gravel-guard/

https://olivertraveltrailers.com/forums/topic/2513-how-to-rear-mud-flaps-for-the-ollie/

The system works wonderfully, the front of my 2017 looks like new, and the only damage underneath occurs in a very few spots where it can’t be seen. And it also works on regular highways, you will no longer cringe when you see that sign “Fresh Chip Seal Next 50 miles”.

Does anyone have the rock guards on a Duramax?

Looking at the pics posted it looks like my exhaust pipe is obstructing where the guards would go.

Weird - I see the pic.

Re the exhaust and Rock Tamers - that company produces various models of the product that work with specific brands and exhaust systems such that the rubber flaps are not affected by the heat of the exhaust.  From the picture posted I assume that either these are the wrong Rock Tamers for the application or the exhaust is far enough away from the tamers that they are not affected.

You have to get the right ones for your truck. You need the ones with the opening for the exhaust.

I'm guessing that the problem is the old Apple versus Android/Windows thing.

I'll see if I can fix it but do not have a minute at the moment.

OK started to work on the picture viewing problem.

Is the quoted picture above the one that is not viewable on Apple products?  Or, is the problem picture the view of the red truck with the rock tamers.  Or both?

I decided to get the Rock Star. I chose the full width version that closes most of the gap in the middle.   I like the way it looks with the truck, it's solid and easy to pull off when I'm home.   At the time I was shopping... they all seemed to be in the same price point.   After a lot of gravel roads... still not a nick anywhere on our Oliver.

We also chose Rockstar mudflaps for our 2019 Tundra.  We like that the assembly covers the full width of the truck.

On our Tundra, the Rockstar is mounted inboard of the bumper, placing it closer to the rear wheels.  See attached photo.  No visible chips yet on Hull #1291.

Thanks - Steve,

I think that we may have a failure to communicate.

I'm going to assume that everyone can see the picture of the red truck but cannot see the

"IMG_1178.jpg"

Using Windows and Android I cannot see the 1178 either but I can see the red truck.

I now believe that the 1178 was meant to be the red truck but there was a

problem with that when it got into the original post.

We have Rock Tamers on our 2011 Tundra.  I had contemplated installing 3M film or Rhino on the nose of the Ollie before our trip to Alaska.  Decided we could do Rhino afterwards if we ended up with rock chips.  Given the Alaska portland cement that sticks to everything (those of you that have driven the Alcan and other roads know what I'm talking about) - we didn't see the chips that were happening until we got home and cleaned up the Ollie.  The Rock Tamers didn't quite do the job.

The rock chips aren't terrible and if they bother me a lot, we will do the Rhino.

If you will be bothered by rock chips and you are driving a bunch of unimproved roads - you will need something additional besides Rock Tamers.
