Choosing Cabinet Colors

Recommended Posts

Hi! I've been a reader on the Forum but this is my first post.  I ordered an Oliver which going into production June 26. I'm still trying to make some final choices. I like the frost cabinetry but wonder if it will look as cool when the cabinet are full of stuff.  Does anyone have photos they'd be willing to share with the frosted cabinetry full with the lights on and then full with the lights off? Would sure appreciate your thoughts.

I don't have a pic, but I have seen one trailer with frosted glass and I thought it looked cheap and tacky. Seeing ghostly shapes of your pots, pans, shampoo bottles and stacked clothes is not exactly uplifting.

After a few false starts, you will quickly remember where you stored your stuff, if you go wth mirrored or dark.

I like the mirrors, they really add a lot of reflected light and make the cabin feel bigger inside, day or night. You soon learn to open and close them using the latches, to avoid getting your fingerprints everywhere. Well ... one of us has learned that.

There are lots of general pics of frosted glass cabinets, here is one:

Keep in mind that your trailer shelves won't look anything like that after a long bumpy trip - your stuff will be a lot less tidy and photogenic. Nor will you be putting pretty and fragile glassware up there....

We don't have the frosted but we have the white. We chose this so that we would have a nice white canvass that we can do anything with. You can add wallpaper paintings or whatever you wish throughout the trailer.

We did have them put the mirrored door in the bathroom. I like sleeping in the dark and we thought that the mirrored doors would basically create a laser light show all over with the green lights in the cabin at night. Plus with the white, there are no visible fingerprints at all.

Thank you everyone!  This is so helpful. I love the idea of the white as a canvas for decorating. You have helped me to see that the frosted is probably not the option I will like, even though I love the glow of them empty with the lights on. That's just not the reality of what they will look like. And I imagine mine will be stuffed full since I'm going to be a fulltime RVer. It's interesting to me that a few people have said how much they like the mirrored ones. When I think about those, I see a surface where every fingerprint will show up. I love this forum and after I am in my Oliver, I hope to be helpful to others as you all have been to me.

As John Davies says above, there is a method of opening and closing the mirrored doors that does not involve actually touching the mirrored part.  Simply using your index finger you open the latch and then lightly pull on that latch as the door opens.  As the door continues to open you leave you index finger in place allowing the door to fully open before removing your finger.  When it comes time to close the door, again using your index finger, you reach behind the door placing your index finger in the latch.  Then simply rotate your finger inside the latch surface as you lift and close the door.  Really is a piece of cake and no prints are left on the mirrored part.

We chose the frosted glass look because we did not want to see ourselves everytime we got up in the Oliver through all the mirrored cabinets.  Also the constant cleaning of the fingerprints from the mirrored cabinets.  We can see a bit of what is inside of the cabinets but not much at all but do not think they look cheap or tacky.  We also like the ambient light when the cabinet lights are turned on.  In all things, it is a choice that each person feels good about and likes because all likes are not the same.  Because we are full- timing in our Oliver, the cabinets are full.ob0xb0trmclb0p23y17ih6w9rqq23yoh.jpg.1f2fd301dfbea9effa5bd6acf72b7a11.jpg

We have the mirrored finish and have no complaints with it.  I also leave the cabinet lights on sometimes at night and we get light from around the perimeter of the doors. Just a bit of cabin light that helps us navigate at night without being too much.  I've never noticed any excessive reflection from the mirrors.  The mirrors make the trailer feel a bit bigger inside and they break up the white walls and ceiling.

This is how we do it, fingerprints are not much of an issue.

Same here on both - makes it seem a bit more open and provides just the right amount of light when it's dark.  As far as looking at yourself all the time it really isn't the case unless you are deliberately trying to check out your good looks.

Ours are black.  You could stare at the sun with them with NO light getting through. They only show fingerprints "a little" according to Tali. Personally, I've never noticed. We chose black because that is what we had in our first Outlaw Oliver and it compliments the black front of the refrigerator and our microwave.

I have to say that there are advantages to every one of the choices and we went back and forth, especially between black and frosted.  some people have done mirrored only on the end cabinet which seems to be a decent tradeoff between making the space seem bigger and not feeling like you're in a hall of mirrors.  Adding the mirrored cabinet in the bathroom seems like a wise move as well.

I have the black cabinet doors.  At the time, white and frosted were not available.

Another way of thinking about your cabinet doors, is to consider how your selection will work with your other design choices such as, fabrics, countertops and floor options.  The attached video may be of some help.

SupersizeLIFE,

Yes, I chose the Dakota fiber-granite countertops.  For me, the various interior décor options, are a great feature in an Oliver travel trailer.  I tend to be affected by color and color combinations.  My preference are various shades of gray.  When you own a big sloppy dog, the color choice of gray can be a blessing.

Buzzy,

Your interior looks very nice with the contrast of dark and white.

Looks like you added  thicker mattresses.  What are they?

John
