HOBO HIDEOUT just about complete

Recommended Posts

We took possession of our trailer (2 Hobos) in May and now we have a new parking place for it.  Attached is a pic of a new building for HOBO just completed (sort of) today.  The structure is 32' long, 20 wide, and ceiling height is 12'.  Door opening is 12' wide by 11 tall.  I think even a blind pig could slip HOBO into this without much trouble.  Overhead door, concrete floor (with help from friends), and exterior stonework (me) next.  In that order.  Electric and water soon to arrive too.   We're really excited to get HOBO under cover.  The really amazing part of this story is that it was constructed by two young Amish men (early 20s) in just four days.  That is from bare ground to final structure  Four days, 2 men.  These are remarkable young folks.  We had a lot of fun together and really enjoyed having them around for the last few days.  We formed a personal relationship with them and hope to see them again soon.

Hobo -

Very nice indeed.  I wish that our home owners association would allow something like this.

Very nice indeed, How much of a job will it be to run power? It makes you feel good to have cover and security for your investment and travel companion..,..

Power won't be too hard.  I have two,  200 AMP panels in my garage at the house so I'll just Ditch Witch a 200 foot (or so) trench down to the Hideout.  I'll drop some Cat 5 or 6 wire in the conduit too for phone or internet or whatever.  From another direction, I'll trench out a water line from my existing barn over to the Hideout and put in a frost-free spigot outside the structure.  All I'll need then is a house number for it so I can have pizza delivered!

I know it seems a little over-kill but the Oliver is quite an investment and I sure want to protect it.  Also, our HOA requires all recreational vehicles to be housed in a structure and not visible to adjoining property owners.  Luckily, except for the basic structure itself, all the other features are within my capabilities (with the help of friends) to do at actual cost of materials.

I might have to have Foy make me a neat little "HOBO Hideout" sign for the front of it with his new super-duper-electronic-computer controlled, wood carving machine!

BTW: The overhead door should be installed this week.

With the exception of the roof trusses, it was stick built.

  • 2 months later...

Hey Paul, we haven't gotten into a good routine of checking the forum, so I just stumbled across this post from June and wanted to say how lovely the Hideout looks!  Hopefully the rest of the construction has progressed well (or has been put on hold while you're enjoying HOBO!).  We've been scrambling to make sure we have everything in order for our September pickup (reservations, tools and supplies, checklists, etc., etc.).  We keep adding things to our never-ending packing list.  Give our best to Donna as well!

We are in the very northern part of the Shenandoah valley of VA.  We're just a couple of miles east of Winchester, VA (interstate 81) in the town of Berryville.

In fact, we just had the interior slab poured two days ago (Tuesday) so HOBO has not been allowed into it's bedroom yet.  As far as travel is concerned, we've been stuck here since coming back from the rally due to other ongoing projects, a bathroom remodel, the arrival of a third grandson, etc. etc.

Donna is departing next week for a week at the beach with one of her BFFs and when she gets back, we're heading to southwest VA  to camp at Natural Tunnel State Park.  Two weeks later, we head back to the beach in NC where we have a house rented for a family vacation.  Finally, after all that is done, we've decided to take off around Nov.1st and head down to SC and FL for about three weeks of camping and sightseeing. That will be our first really good trip.

Hope you guys are doing well.  Sept is almost here.  I'll bet you're excited.  BTW: Where are you lodging when you get there?

We're definitely one part excited to two parts nervous about our first time towing/RVing.  We have an entire room upstairs devoted to bins full of stuff for the Ollie.  As for where we're staying, I actually found a B&B/house rental in downtown Hohenwald called Meriwether's Retreat for the night before.  I spoke with the owner extensively about fragrance and chemical issues and she was great!  They were already trying to make sure the place was chemical free, and I was able to recommend some additional products she might want to try.  So, I'm hopeful we'll have a good, trigger-free night before we pick up our trailer.  I'll post more to the forum if it's a nice place, because being right in town the night before seems to be the easiest approach.  Jason, our sales person who replaced Heather, happened to call last week and let me know that he saw our trailer in quality control, so it should have a number of weeks to off-gas, and hopefully I'll be able to handle it without resorting to steroids.

I'm very jealous of Hobo's Hideout, because the best we were able to find was a grassy field at a storage place, though the owner though she might be able to stick us up in a paved portion because we'll be smaller than most.  We've been on a waiting list for months for an indoor RV storage place, but that costs $300+ per month.  If you ever need to justify the costs of the Hideout, use that as your comparison figure, and then factor in the convenience, as that place is a good 20-30 minutes from us.  At least the grassy field is less than 10 minutes away.

Congrats on the new grandson!  Sounds like you've got a full travel agenda for the fall.  We certainly hope it all goes smoothly, and maybe we'll even see you out there, as we were looking at some South Carolina low-country places ourselves for the fall.

Kathryn (& Chad),

Sounds like your plans are progressing well.

As far as this  fall, we will travel to the Charlotte, NC area first to visit some old friends and then the second stop will be Hunting Island State Park near Beaufort, SC.  (I am from Beaufort.)  Beyond that, we will head down to the St. Augustine, FL area (camp ground TBD) and then over to the west side of the state (near Tampa) and hang out for a while visiting other folks we know in the region.  I say TBD because we are finding that NICE campgrounds in the south are very hard to find on short notice.  Short notice being anything less than 6-12 months out.   We tried to get into the state park near St Augustine but no dice.  We're still looking.  Also, toward Tampa we just don't have any insight as to what's out there.  Time to find some GOOD software.  You might want to start making reservations NOW!

We've already realized that we need to make reservations now for any major trips to the west next year.

Keep us informed on your plans.  Paul and Donna
