Under the Dinette storage mods?

I was looking under the Dinette in the compartment by the battery box to make a couple of electrical mods and saw a lot of unused open space. Being that it's right over the axle, I'm wondering if any of you have converted this space into storage? Since Oliver took out the roller for the 30amp cord, this place is empty. I'm thinking about lining and insulating the wiring, putting it in conduit, and then running styrofoam insulation over it to box it in and keep the wiring harnesses isolated and secure, and then putting in a small pantry complete with shelves up to just below the battery box. It's a good place for clothes and gloves as is but being right over the axle, it could be used for lots more like pots and pans or an instapot if set up for it... Then you could put in an outside door for the cord and water hoses also, which is another option...

I'm always doing something it seems, but this is a huge unused storage space that can handle some weight if done correctly...

Yes, our original Oliver has those storage bins, uniquely formed to fill the available spaces under seats.

I'm surprised they no longer make them . Have you checked to see if your trailer just didn't get the bins???

No bins for ours (number 218); this is one of the two screwed down "No access in here, keep out you idiot" panels. Which I immediately removed the screws from, so I can access it.

I keep ropes, a hammock and other non metallic stuff in there, but like Reed, this winter I may build a solid non-conductiiong structure that can take some weight, while also keeping stuff away from the high voltage wiring and the plumbing below...

There is also a ton of potential storage between the furnace and the rear cabin wall.  Another of those Do Not Use places that I intend to use.

They moved it back behind the battery box, under the bed.

Right now we have the owners manuals down there with some blankets but this space has serious potential because of the location. We have the King bed, so the access behind the heater is out... Or outside maybe :) When we get home I'm going to go head and convert the unused propane area to hold our extra step and some spare blocks, so it's going to need a tall but skinny door for the step and if it won't fit there then I'll leave it as is for now because the extra step fits fine in the Yakima box on top of the car. Then I'm thinking of putting in a 120vac outlet to the right of the battery box cover outside and run it directly to the open port on the inverter to be able to hook up power for our friends, who travel with us, to use who have Casitas or small trailers with no inverter. Another thing that I want is the light in the outside storage to shine all the way to the back wall because the way it is now just pointing straight down at the door is basically useless and it creates a blind spot behind it... There's lots of potential for more storage when needed.

Oh my! I really like the dinette starage insert. We did't get one in #245 - wish we had!'Much nicer than trying to finding an appropriate conainer to fit over all of the duct work & plumbing, etc. Wonder if they still have those available?

At this point we haven't explorered the locked down side of the dinette.

The storage inserts were available in the 2008 and 2009 models of the original Elites.  They were constructed in two pieces of some sort of reasonable heavy ABS type material using a vacuum mold system and were then pop riveted together.  During the conception and build of the early Elite II's, I questioned their absence and was told that they would no longer be making them due to the increased storage capacity of the larger trailers.  Since they were not making the smaller Elite I at that time and had no immediate plan to do so, that idea was placed on a far back burner.  As far as I know,  that policy is still in effect, and I do not know if they are available for the current Elites.  The lower compartments are arraigned completely different in the new models so the old molds would not work for them.

However, they worked well in the early models if you used them to store lightweight items.  If you filled them with about 40 pounds of canned goods, they then collapsed and fell into the well making it the dickens to remove.

All that being said, it would be a good idea to revisit for the Elites since storage space is still at a premium.

I cleaned out the "basement" compartment and noticed the floor, under the mat, was made out of what looked glass covered foamcore (probably a camper door or window cutout). It covered electrical wires and 'stuff'. Makes a smooth floor. Similar material should make a great and sturdy floor in the dinette compartments. Looks like another winter project...
