Thanks to everyone who came to Lake Guntersville State Park for the 4th Annual Oliver Travel Trailer Owners’ Rally.

Re-Torquing Wheels!
Why is it so important?!
By: Jason Essary, Service Manager

What are Lug Nuts?
Lug nuts are what keeps your wheels securely attached to the hub, which means they are extremely important to the safety and functionality of your camper.

What is Torque?
Torque is the amount of twisting force applied to a lug nut when tightening it. The lug nuts should be torqued accordingly each time your wheels are removed and reinstalled. It is required, each time your wheels are removed to ensure proper torque, that you re-torque your wheels within 50 miles and every 200 miles thereafter.

Why is Proper Torque Necessary?
Each type of wheel will have a designated torque limit specified by the manufacturer to ensure proper functionality and safety. Over tightening a lug nut can cause damage to the bolt threads while not tightening enough can cause a wheel to come loose and fall off while driving down the road. It is also important that the lug nuts are clean and free of any dirt or debris as this can cause an improper torque.

Why is Retorquing necessary?
After a reasonable amount of time your lug nuts will start to loosen due to normal stress of supporting the weight of the camper, the rotational effect of driving, bumps in the road and warming and cooling of the metal. These types of stress can cause slight shifts which may result in tightening or loosening of the lug nuts. Aluminum wheels are also a softer material than steel which means that lug nuts can loosen more easily.

Proper Order for Torquing
Lug nuts should also be torqued in a precise order to ensure the best even torque on all lug nuts. Your camper is equipped with a 6-bolt hub and should be torqued following a star pattern. It is best to tighten the lug nuts to a lower torque setting preferably 90ft. lbs as a first pass to evenly torque the nuts before completing the final torque. The final torque should be done at 120 ft lbs following the star pattern to ensure the best even torque on all 6 lug nuts.

*WHEN WHEELS HAVE BEEN REMOVED & REPLACED YOU SHOULD RETORQUE AT 50 MILES AND EVERY 200 MILES THEREAFTER

*TORQUE WRENCHES SHOULD BE CALIBRATED EVERY YEAR! IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF HOW TO TORQUE THE WHEELS, PLEASE SEEK EXPERT ASSISTANCE AT A SERVICE CENTER.

*OLIVER TRAVEL TRAILERS WHEEL TORQUE – 120 FT LBS

Monthly Trivia

Last Month's Trivia:
True or False. May has always been the 5th month of the year?

Answer:
False. May was originally the third month of the year in older versions of the Roman calendar and consisted of 31 days. It became the fifth month when the months January and February were added to the calendar.
