Respectfully, John, it's a great tow vehicle, given a clear understanding of capabilities and limitations. I'd guess that particular owner had an issue with loading (as I described in the post above.)

Thanks for posting this @ScubaRx. Very useful information. I've done some towing with a Touareg TDi with air, a Q7 TDi, and a Cayenne S with air. Also an allroad with air. The air suspension makes a big difference on this SUV platform. And it is indeed a highly capable towing vehicle, given good operating habits and no overloading. My Q7 is rated for 6600 lbs, while the Cayenne is rated for 7600. I think it has to do with the distance between the rear axle and the ball on each chassis (which are similar but not identical). We recently rented a 3500 lb travel trailer and the owner provided their own (mandatory) weight distribution hitch. Also...they didn't get the overall balance right, with the hitch attachment too low, so the trailer was not level at rest. I guess they were accustomed to tow vehicles with higher receivers. Fortunately we only drove a short distance from central CT to Lime Rock Park in NW CT. Now that my wife had a great first experience, we're starting to shop for a travel trailer. I was hoping to find something with a rear bed and access on each side, but those seem mostly to be in the 5,000# and up range, mostly up. And given the prior post, I'm afraid I need to stay under 5K in gross weight. I'd also like to find dry bath, nice dinette, dual axle, but again...weight. We'll see how the search goes. Suggestions welcome!
