No, I'm not touting my adopted state. ;)

Yesterday, we spent the day at Forever Florida near St. Cloud. This 4700 acre area, dedicated to Allen Broussard by his parents, hopes to preserve at least within its confines the spirit and ecosystem of pioneer Florida.

What a great day. The young people ziplined through the woods, getting an ecotour on the way to the course in a giant swamp buggy. We parents enjoyed a two hour tour in a similar coach, visiting sloughs, creeks, regenerated prairie, cedar domes, and pine forest. We saw allligators, deer, and turkeys, along with a number of other birds. Though we didn't get to see a rare Florida panther, we did see his tracks in the sand.

Part of the acreage is a working farm, with a large herd of Florida cracker cattle, direct descendants of the cattle left behind by the Spaniards when they were attacked by the Calusa Indians.

Forever Florida includes two big campgrounds, with no hookups but flush toilets and hot showers. We'd love to go back and camp with some of our friends.

Our current plans have us in Florida in at least most of February... haven't decided beyond that yet. Would be awesome to have an Olly rally while we're in the area :)

Someplace has to be Florida forever, 'cause this place I'm at right now sure doesn't feel like it! Even though the GPS and the sign at the park entrance said this was Manatee State Park, the ranger said it would be 15 degrees tonight!#$!?*!!! What's up with that?

Wish you Technomadias were down here already. After the hippie wedding on the beach, we started an EggRoll Rally . . . Oscar & I followed Mr & Mrs Tumbleweed & Earthdancer's Ollie down the road to this fine park as we head down to Ft Desoto State Park on an Island south of St Petersburg, FL where we'll meet up with Meanderthal & She Boss. They were also at the hippie wedding. Seadawg & her first mate will be joining us for a bit as well. Woohooo!

We're going to try and see some manatees in the river tomorrow. If we don't see any, Tumbleweed said he'd try and go ice skating for us! :o

Brrr.... so very not Florida-like. Heck, the whole country seems to be extra special chilly. Here in St. Louis we're lucky to get into double digit temps this week. If it weren't for house and dog sitting, we'd be so on our way south to join y'all!

Enjoy!
