I am considering a Sequoia, the problem is trying to get one!

I am very interested in the Victron Multiplus mostly because of its Power Assist capabilities. Did you install one in a Legacy I or II?

You certainly have a very nice setup. I may be underestimating the amount of gear that I will carry. I did some calculations on my gear and weight and I arrive somewhere around 4650 out of 5000 for the trailer and 910 out of 1390. I am more concerned about safety, control and braking as opposed to pushing the engine or transmission while climbing.

Hi John I honestly appreciate your feedback. Here is more info: I have the AWD V6 8 speed XLE. It has sway control but I don’t think I have TV-AWD. I installed a class 3 hitch and a RedArc proportional brake controller. I also plan to add the Andersen Weight distribution option. Legacy I with all my options Dry Weight: 4150# + 32 galons water 260# + kitchenware 50# + Food/Clothing 100# = 4560# TV Door Sticker capacity on driver door 1390# Tongue 450# + 2 Passengers 300# + gear 160# = 910# I would be at 91% Tow Capacity and 66% Load Capacity. Ideally, I would want to be at less that 80% on both numbers but combined the total weight is 5470# for a total capacity of 6390# putting me at 85%. For the next few years, we plan to camp in the North East within a few hours from home because we still have teenagers at home. Going across the country may not happen before a few years. By then, I should have enough experience towing to decide if I want to replace my Highlander with a more capable vehicle. Meanwhile, safety is my most important concern. I don’t mind if the engine struggles uphill as much as I want to have good control and braking. I also selected the Legacy I because it fits in my garage and since my wife and I am 5’9 and my wife is a petite 5’2, we feel at ease with the lower ceiling and smaller bed. What do you think?

Excellent question but Toyota has no response to this. Moving a few hundred pounds forward helps in any situation.

Hi I asked a similar question before. My tow vehicle is a Highlander 2020 V6 gas with 5000 pound towing capacity. I installed a RedArc proposal Electric controller and I plan to install a Andersen weight distribution hitch. I know that I would be towing once loaded at 4700 pounds. That’s why I have been considering getting a Airstream Basecamp REI. But I prefer the Oliver for many reasons. I would appreciate your honest safety advise. Keep in mind that our Highlander will never have more that 3 passengers.

With the Lithium/Solar upgrade, is there a concern that the higher voltage of the Oliver would back feed into the lower voltage tow vehicle since via the 12V on the 7-pin? The purpose of the 12 volt was to maintain the charge on the breakaway brake battery but since it will not charge the Lithium, is it better to disconnect the 12 volt from the 7-way it or to put a diode at the tow vehicle battery side? When staying overnight at a Cracker Barrel while hooked up, would you disconnect the 7-way? Thank You in advance for your insight.

John Thats interesting about the Subaru engine. I am more concerned about handling and braking than I am about climbing. If I need to slow down climbing with the engine in relative high rpm, I am fine with that. I am also hoping that I can get a decent amount of engine braking downhill. I would think that the bigger Highlander V6 would help here. It looks like the Elite that I am looking at would weight between 4500 - 4700 but I will not put that much load in the Highlander itself. It will be just my wife and I and a probably no more than an additional 250 pounds for a total of about 535 pounds in the TV I don’t know if the 5000 pound towing rating can be added to the 1685 payload capacity. If so then my capacity would be 6685 and my actual total weight 5035-5235. I also plan to add the Andersen weight distribution system. Does that put me in a comfortable safe zone?

I was planning to used my Hylander 2020 XLE to tow a well equipped Legacy I and I was told that a 5000 pound towing vehicle is not recommended for the Elite 1 since mine would end up between 4500 and 4700 pounds. The Ascent has similar specs. I plan to use the same brake controller. Did you go into mountains, steep hills, etc…?

Let me reply to my own topic. If I were to upgrade my tow vehicle, I would go for the latest Sequoia that can tow 9000. That’s a long wait and it would migrate me safely into a Legacy II . My two biggest problems are that the Legacy II won’t fit in my garage but the Legacy I would if I invest $8K to open up the garage door.

I have a 2020 Highlander XLE with updated Michelin Performance tires. I am hoping to purchase a legacy Elite with the Truma Heater and AC, the Lithium Pro Package, a generator in the front basket and a bike rack in the back and a full 32 gallon water tank. It will weight between 4500-4700. I will also install the Andersen weight distribution system and the best brake controller. I understand that I might compromise on performance in altitude and mountains but I don’t want to compromise on safety. I appreciate your advice in advance.

Indeed I will have the solar option and the hitch receiver for 2 bikes in the back. So you don’t think my Highlander is appropriate even with the weight distribution kit. I will install the best brake controller I can find and I have Michelin High Performance Cross Climate tires. I don’t mind if under some circumstances, I have to slow down but I don’t want to compromise on safety.

I have the 2020 XLE V6 model it has a 5000 pound capacity. I would be a show stopper if it cannot tow a Legacy Elite 1. The Dry weight is 3700 pounds. 32 gallons of water adds 300 poundsI will probably end up around 4500 pounds. I better start another topic on this because, I don’t have the budget to get an Oliver and replace my 2020 Highlander.

I plan to have the Andersen Weight Distribution system so I am not concerned with a little extra weight. I have seen a drawing for the LE2 basket, not the LE. I don’t know the dimensions of the cut corners. If the EU2200i can fit snugly against the side of the basket, there should be room for a fuel can next to it.

It’s a Highlander 2020. I don’t want to carry fuel inside.

With either the EU2200i or EU3200i, there doesn’t seem to be any room left to safely store a 5 gallon gas canister or even a 2.5 gallon?
