Moderators SeaDawg Posted June 2, 2019 Moderators Posted June 2, 2019 Hurricane season started yesterday. This week, if you live in Florida, saves the sales tax on tarps, flashlights, coolers, weather radios, and portable generators. https://www.sun-sentinel.com/features/deals-shopping/fl-bz-hurricane-preparedness-tax-free-holiday-20190530-5kptlpvv2nd5vi4hdmpgtadzde-story.html 1 2008 Ram 1500 4 × 4 2008 Oliver Elite, Hull #12 Florida and Western North Carolina, or wherever the truck goes.... 400 watts solar. newbee Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Thanks Seadog! I’ve found the generator that was recommended by Oliver sales department is not strong enough to run my AC. I actually bought a little more powerful one-the Honda 2200i instead of the 2000i. It quits on me when I adjust the thermostat, and the one time I turned on ONE LED reading light. Everything else was off. Refrigerator on LP. No TV. Nothing charging. My batteries were in good shape. I spoke with service dept. and he kept saying “there are some situations where it won’t work.” Great! I live in Florida. It’s been 100 f. I love to boondock whenever I can. I need the AC to work. Any ideas? Do I now have to buy another $1,000 Honda to piggyback on? Or is it better to try to sell the one I have and get a 3500? I’d like to decide so I can take advantage of the tax holiday.
Moderator+ ScubaRx Posted June 3, 2019 Moderator+ Posted June 3, 2019 Personally, I’d rather have one piece of equipment that can handle any job at hand. For our Oliver(s) we have successfully used a Yamaha EF3000iSEB for over 11 years. I’d go bigger. newbee Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Thanks Steve. Thats what I was wondering. Less space taken in truck. But I can barely lift the Honda 2200. Is the Yamaha similar weight, do you know? If it's heavier I may have to rethink.
Moderators SeaDawg Posted June 3, 2019 Author Moderators Posted June 3, 2019 The big drawback to the powerful but quiet Yamaha is its weight. It's almost 3 times the weight of your Honda 2200. 47 for the Honda, 130+ for the Yamaha. That's why our Yamaha sits in the garage. It's only use is for power outages, and those wheels really help to move it around! If it were me, I'd get the second Honda and the cables. Carry two when you need it, one when all you want is a quiet battery charging genset. newbee Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Thank you Sherry! I thought that would be the problem I would encounter. I've already found that I can't lift the full 30lb. propane tanks up, over and down into the holding area. Some propane dealers have a policy to not help people. Anyway-with 2 I'll have plenty of power. Do you know anything about the portable waste holding gizmo's you pull behind your truck? Seems really handy for boon docking.
Moderators SeaDawg Posted June 3, 2019 Author Moderators Posted June 3, 2019 I guess you're talking about a blue boy. We have one that someone gave us, and we've never used it. They're really intended only for campground use, most people walk them, and probably just as easy to go dump, fill with fresh water, and go on. A blue boy should match your tank capacity. Some campgrounds only allow them for grey. (Probably because of thise folks who don't match up the capacities.) Other folks here may have used one. We'll see who chimes in Sherry 2008 Ram 1500 4 × 4 2008 Oliver Elite, Hull #12 Florida and Western North Carolina, or wherever the truck goes.... 400 watts solar. DC compressor fridge. Moderators topgun2 Posted June 3, 2019 Moderators Posted June 3, 2019 I've used one a few times. But, instead of getting one that I would take to a dump site, I got one that was just big enough that I could actually lift it while "full". The reason I did this is so that I could take it into virtually any toilet and dump it versus having to take it to a dumpsite. Since it is smaller than the black tank in the Oliver I also purchased a "gauge" that goes in the top of the portable tank that tells me when it is getting full. By using the tank in this manner I can stay in either a Forest Service or boondocking site almost indefinitely. newbee Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Sounds like something I may need if I can go do the kind of camping I'd like to do. Good info. Thanks Bill Christy
