CedarForks Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 I found the Breakaway Switch hanging loose under our 2019 Legacy II. From the outline left on the frame it would seem that it had been held in place by a single small screw into the frame. Would a 3" strip of 1" VHB tape be stronger than the 'pin pull' in an emergency? Thanks.
rideadeuce Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 Yes, from my limited experience with VHB tape, yes, as long as you prep both mating surfaces with alcohol. But why not replace the screw in addition, since the hole is already there. 1 - Mike Brentwood, TN - 2018 Elite II - Spirit of Adventure Hull #308 - 2016 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7L Class IV hitch with 12k lb coupler, Dobinsons HD 2in Leaf springs, Timbren bump stops, Eibach Pro Truck Stage 2R, Mechman 370 amp HO alternator. bhncb Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 The switch needs to be free to rotate so it can adjust to the angle of pull by the cable. Best to replace the screw. 1
John E Davies Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 I would install a larger self tapping screw AND the 3M tape, aligning the switch with the lanyard attach point on the trailer hitch. I don’t think that in normal operation it has to rotate, as long as it is positioned correctly when secured. Even an off-angle pull easily withdraws the plunger. One thing you do not want to happen in an accident is for the switch assembly to pull off the frame instead of the plunger coming out. That would be very bad ....
