  1. The worst problems I’ve seen while assisting other owners with electrical problems has always been loose connections. The fact that this setup requires you to cut the molded female plug off your existing power cable and replace it with the smart plug indicates to me there will be some screws involved in the attachment of the new connector. To me, herein lies the potential for future issues. Every melted wire I’ve ever seen has been due to a loose or frayed screw connection. If the system included molded plugs on a 40 foot cord, I’d like it a lot better. Of course, then it would cost $300.

    Hi

if we buy an Oliver, the smart plug will be one of the first mods I do to the trailer. I have used the twist style plastic connection on previous trailers and the smart plug is superior.

I have also asked our salesman Josh to have it installed from the factory and they would not entertain the idea. So far Oliver does not seem very responsive for a $100k trailer

    Eric

Oliver will not make any substitutions or modifications during the construction phase. They probably would be willing to make the swap in service before delivery. If you have the ability to do it yourself, you should.

  3. The main thing would be to keep it out of the weather. Direct sunlight, rain, hail etc. The floor being dirt wouldn't matter too much to me unless it flooded and turned to mud during wet weather. You would ideally want electricity and water available near where it is parked and easy access, maybe even pull thru but backing is not too hard to learn to do. A connection for dumping would be a real plus. Sounds like a great starting point.

  4. I assume you are speaking of this one...

    Amazon's Description:

    • Eliminates Overheating - Increased pin and clip surface area greatly improves electrical conductivity during high amperage demand
    • Weather Resistant Seals - Multi-fin silicone gaskets installed in the inlet cover and the plug body eliminates moisture penetration
    • Quick and Easy Installation - Inlet mounting flange holes match twist-type holes for an installation that is typically finished in 30 minutes
    • The SmartPlug Combo Kit includes both a 30 Amp 125 Volt inlet connector and a retro-fit connector. The retro-fit connector is designed to be used with your existing cord. This package offers superior performance and ease of use. The inlets are available in stainless steel and three non-metallic colors, (White, Gray or Black), of high performance/flame resistant material. Increased pin and clip surface area greatly improves electrical conductivity during high amperage demand. No twist required, the unique plug body shape and push-in design mean it only goes in the right way every time - even in the dark! Side clips and inlet cover lock the plug body securely into the inlet which eliminates any stress on the electrical components by the movement of the power cord. Multi-fin silicone gaskets installed in the inlet cover and the plug body eliminates moisture penetration. Inlet mounting flange holes match twist-type holes for an installation that is typically finished in 30 minutes.

There may well be some advantages with the Smart Plug, but I'm not too sure that I can see $150 worth of difference in this and what comes installed on the Oliver.

How are y’all doing?  We are a couple from IL.  Never owned a travel trailer. We are considering an Ollie. We want to travel the country. See National Parks, beaches, forests, deserts, etc. we are looking for input on what you did right. What you would have done differently. We are close to retiring. Couple years out. Plan on going to a factory visit next year. TIA. We appreciate all the advice.

    D & S

The right thing we did was to buy an Oliver. In fact, we've bought two of them. Any other brand would have turned out to be a disappointment.

The thing I would have done differently would have been to buy the correct tow vehicle in the beginning instead of going thru five different ones to finally get to where I needed to be all along. You can see the particulars in my signature.

As @Frank C stated above "...just be prepared with the checkbook.   It ain’t a cheap hobby...

    Good Luck

If you've never been in a hail event, what's the point of responding, imo?

Because if we don't respond, even if the answer is "NO" the pollster can't determine the percentage of folks that HAVE encountered hail VS those who haven't. IF it were my poll, I would want to know that.

(Apologies if this post is redundant - second try at posting.  We tried posting this earlier and couldn't find it thereafter, trying again now.)

Please complete the attached poll regarding Oliver Hail Damage Assessment...

I took your first poll down because it forced you to continue even if you answered no to the first question. You would not have gotten any usable information the way it was. I'm not sure you can count on good information with this one either.

    ooops,

Allow multiple answers for number 3. I am not sure how to do that within a single question, it might require individual questions for each item.

Question # 2 also allows multiple answers.

Plus, shouldn't the first question be whether you've ever been affected by hail?  With a Y/N answer. Because if it's "no", you don't need to continue.

In your experience, what is the most reliable, safe, and high performing vehicle for towing the Oliver Legacy Elite II? I am a newby, and hoping to buy a vehicle in the next month, then drive from MI to TN to get a tour and either buy one on the spot or order an Elite II. Thank you in advance for any and all feedback!

Silverado Diesel 3500 HD, in MY experience with two different Oliver TT's and five different tow vehicles over a 15+ year span traveling over 150K miles.

Also, you need to edit your poll selection to include all HD trucks (3/4 ton and 1 ton) of any brand. Everybody here knows (or should know) that anything smaller is a compromise when it comes to payload, fuel capacity and the requirement to use a WDH like the Andersen.

I can't think of a single reason to NOT have a vehicle without a tow package.

Two weeks ago, I saw one of the F150 Lightnings in-the-wild in Burlington, VT.  It was from Quebec and pulled about a 4000 pound "stick built" trailer behind it.  It was a very nice looking truck, (even with the electric cord from the camp pedestal running to the plug in the front left fender - Haha)

I spoke with the owner and asked him how well it towed and he said "Effortlessly". Then I asked him what his range was while pulling his trailer, the response was "One hundred sixtly kilometers"

    That's 100 miles, folks.

All you have to do to experience this same range in a fuel based vehicle is just put about 12 gallons in at each fill up. The only difference is that filling up this way will only take about 5 minutes.

How about heading north to the bluegrass for Bourbon distillery tours or Louisville. Louisville has great restaurants, Slugger museum, Churchill Downs museum, great breweries and numerous urban distillery tours, Angels Envy, Rabbit Hole,  Old Forrester, Peerless, Evan Williams are all within walking distance of each other downtown.

I'm surprised you left out Jack Daniels in Lynchburg, TN. After all, it is the most interesting and the oldest registered distillery in America. Just don't expect to drink there. Lynchburg is in a dry county.

  12. If I were an Escape owner, I would be about to poop a squealing worm. If I had one on order, I'd cancel it. Escape did away with their own service department under the current leadership. Even if you need warranty work, you've got to find a placed and get it done elsewhere. The also went to some weird form of lottery where if you won, you could cancel your existing order and take the 'Inventory Trailer' du jour that week at whatever price it would have sold for. No choices of colors, options, anything. But, you could get it today instead of waiting until your due date which at that time was about 26 months out. I doubt they're still doing that. The company is presently owned by the hedge fund company KV Private Equity Fund I.

Here's a copy of a post on the Escape Forum:

After reading comments about Inventory Units as well as learning the lead times for new orders have dramatically shortened I wondered who KV Capital- the owner of Escape Trailers is and found some interesting facts.

The original company was formed in 2006 and engaged in Mortgage Lending. their name back then was The Mortgage Corner. In 2010 they rebranded as KV Capital.
This was their business until 2017 when they started KV Private Equity Fund I.

In May 2017 they bought Northern Lite.
In October 2017 they bought Off Grid Trailers.
In July 2018 they bought Escape Trailer.
In October 2018 they bought Campion Boats.

In August 2022 they shut down Campion Boats and liquidated all the equipment and supplies and listed the land and 104,000 sq.ft. building for 14.9 Million. KV Capital says they have plans to re-locate the business and resume building boats under the Campion nameplate through a contract manufacturing arrangement with an as-yet undetermined partner.

In September 2022 KV Capital divests Northern Lite & Off Grid Trailers to Tri-West Capital-founded in 1998 and has a much larger portfolio of Funds with some 28 different companies across a wide range of industries.
    https://triwest.ca/portfolio/

So what about Escape Trailer's prospects? Seems like the Mortgage Lending Business is falling significantly- From PR Newswire:
"Lenders issued a total of 1,518,933 residential mortgages in the fourth quarter of 2022 - the lowest number since the first quarter of 2014. The latest figure was down 24.5 percent from 2,010,609 in the third quarter of 2022 and down 55.2 percent from 3,390,801 in the fourth quarter of 2021.Mar 2, 2023."

I see KV Capital re-launched their Residential Mortgage Brokering in 2021 and in 2022 divested 3 of the 4 Recreational products mfg's they purchased in 2017/2018.

Although it is an extremely poor strategy, we can "hope" that somehow the workers will survive somehow.

So here's the latest on my non working water pump. I ordered and installed a new pump and guess what? It doesn't make a peep either. Just spoke with Mike in Service and learned that checking voltage to the pump requires testing the Ground wire too the pump while testing the Red power coming in to the pump. I had simply grounded the multimeter to the aluminum frame and got 12.3 volts. So, we could have a faulty Ground issue. I will keep you posted.

Well, the good news here is that you've eliminated 50% of your problem. Now check for continuity between the ground wire at the pump and the frame.

I have a 2018 Elite I so my fuse panel is the rear most cabinet. None of the fuses are labeled Water Pump.

The panel you are referring to was a sub-panel they used for a couple of years to supply power to everything above the belly band. You still have the original panel under the front dinette. Check there as the water pump is below the belly band.

Do you think airstream is going to take another run at fiberglass? The airstream nest was a great fiberglass trailer but was abandoned by airstream pretty quickly.

AS may buy them to get into the molded fiberglass RV market...

Well, you know Airstream tried that when they bought Robert Johans original concept design for The Nest. He actually became the project manager on the Nest product development team at Airstream after the sale. The trailer was only manufactured for about 2 years and they dropped it, never publicly giving a reason.

I stepped inside one that was on display at the Hiawassee Rally several years ago. The thing that sticks in my memory most was how HOT it was inside. It was like being inside a glass house in Mississippi in July.

I would be really surprised if Airstream tried that venture again.

I placed a request with Southco for a price quote for twenty of the M1-20-91-78 locks. We'll see what they say.

I got a return call from Southco. I was told what everybody has already said. All the keys are the same, they are just overmolded to make them look more like a real key and that these latches are designed for marine applications. I'm not quite sure how that last part makes any difference unless the company thinks that normally a boat would be away from land and therefore less likely to be burgled.

    Hi everyone

my name is Eric (first time posting on this forum), I am researching Oliver travel trailers and going away from airstream (25fbt international).

One of the items I am requesting from my salesman Josh is eliminating the vents in the door of the batteries since I would go with lithium for a cleaner look.

My thought is for security why not eliminate the outside battery door altogether  and move it to the inside of the trailer.

Any thoughts from Oliver owners on the feasibility of this idea ?

    Have a good day

    Eric

Hello Eric, welcome to the forum. Although there’s nothing inherently wrong with your idea, I don’t think Oliver would ever make the changes you suggested, but if you thought your idea would make your personal ownership experience better, there’s nothing to stop you from doing it yourself. Good Luck and keep thinking outside the box.

Thank you. We really don’t want to add another “something” to carry. Those triangle jacks are what we were thinking that help. It might be something I just have to get use too.😏

If you'll run those jacks down and take the weight off the suspension as other's have suggested, that side to side wobble will virtually disappear. Always put a block of some kind under the jack rather than running it all the way to the ground. One day you will forget to raise one and drive away. If it is not sitting on top of something that will turn over as you pull out, you will find yourself with a jack that now has a bent lower tube that will not go up. Hope you've got a hack saw with you because at that point, it's your only remedy. Oh, and that'll cost you $400+ to replace. Trust Me.
