My friends barn where I park my OE2 is of the same construction design.  Even with lean-to wings on both long sides, the barn was showning high wind instability due to not having cross bracing.

Interesting, GJ. I would think that with the OSB siding it would really stiffen it up. I haven't decided what I'm finishing the interior with yet but, I would imagine that would help too. We've had a few fairly strong storms lately and it hasn't even budged in the stage it's in now. I'll definitely have to consider some possible additional bracing though. Are your friend's walls 2x4 or 2x6?

jd1923, I did add class 5 to one side and will be adding a 30A receptacle for anyone that might visit. It's tough enough to get people to visit northern Minnesota anyhow though!

2 X 6 equivalent's. Metal siding. Originally only rafter bracing in the corners.  They fight torsion of the whole barn.  His problem did not show up for 15 years.  Then I noticed it buffeting just a 1/4" in flanking wind gusts.  Five years later it had loosened up to an inch movement.  It was setting off his alarm system by then.  PM me and I'll send pictures.

You are correct on the OSB sheathing helping.  In time it will do less so.  But cross bracing, even if it only steel straps in an X-Pattern is your best first investment.  Then All four corner posts both ways. Ditto for the trusses.  Then Simpson Strong Ties for the rafters to the walls and walls to the foundation.  Over Kill?  Ten years ago -  Yes.  Now with all the severe weather it is now NO - Almost every place.

So what would it cost you in time and materials with the scaffolding handy?  Consider it as cheap insurance.  Consider the cost of loss of your Ollie and Tractor?

Please translate.  Is it your TV with a class 5 hitch?  If so, that's serious good!

You may be asking for company! Love northern Minnesota, just as long as you can get the fish biting and NOT the mosquitos! We are very likely going to visit Chris' sister in Farmington MN sooner or later. They snowbird down here some winters. We would role that into a Badlands visit, Mt. Rushmore and more.

Hugo, you got a hook-up here too (not garaged). For us, perhaps 2025, or 2026 the latest! 🤣

I had the dirt guy add class 5 fill to the side of the garage for an additional parking spot! It gets nice and rock hard for parking on and so vehicles won't sink into it. Although, I think I may have a class V hitch on my TV now that I think about it since it's a 2.5" receiver. I'll have to check...

Sounds like a plan. Always welcome! Although, I can guarantee that both the fish and the mosquitos will most likely bite!

Siding and trim work is done, doors are in, windows are in, garage doors/openers have been delivered and will be installed next week. Then, final grading and the asphalt people do their thing! Coming together!

  • 1 month later...

Well, passed rough electrical on the first go round so that's good. Had some coordinating to do as the driveway guys got behind, the service line went under the driveway, and the only electrical inspector for our region was on vacation in Mexico until last week. Anyhow, liking how it's turning out so far. The lights have worked out great, the doors are awesome, plenty of clearance backing the Ollie in. Paving and gutters got done this past week. Now, onto the insulation, finishing, and heating system. The fun never ends!
