SALE PRICE UPDATE!!!

This inverter model is now down to $1275 plus tax with a $1499 sales price and 15% promo code. Free shipping and with AZ sales tax less than $1400 OTD! (And China tariffs are still in question.)

The comparable Pioneer model is priced much higher.

Will the Greenland be quiet enough?
Is the power consumption low enough to run on LiFePO4 batteries?
Time to pull the trigger?

Tempting... but I think I'm going to try and hold out for a sale on the Pioneer branded unit. I like the 3 year vs 1 year warranty.

The Pioneer is also advertised "On sale!"
$1,628 - $1,275 = $353 for years 2-3 warranty? Yeah, that would not be me.
Once when I was young, I paid for extended warranty. Only once and we have saved tens of thousands $$,$$$ through the years! 🤣

Extremely low likelihood of failure in years 2-3 when a machine does not fail in the first year. https://www.qualitygurus.com/the-bathtub-curve-in-reliability/

I just have to decide now vs. later and would pick best price regardless of warranty. Will they get more or less expensive? Will a better model come out in the new year? I would have purchased the Atmos 2 years ago, if we still lived in FL or TX!

The Turbro Greenland and Pioneer seem to be the same. However, the Pioneer outdoor unit is 4 LBS heavier. Turbro claims heat pump works down to 19F and Pioneer 28F. This one is likely just a website content error, but which is correct advertising?

The Turbro Greenland now has a $400 promo code. This brings the model down to $1,099!

If you select the model with the black outside cover, it's priced $100 lower! Total price comes to $999!

How would a black one look up top? Too bad the white one isn't priced the same! 🤣

Now it's just getting too hard not to buy one. I think I'm going to be extra nice to the wife today!

Obviously the tariffs haven't affected the pricing on these. I wonder if they shipped a large amount prior to them hitting and now they're trying to liquidate them? Or maybe a new model getting ready to be released?

I chatted, then emailed with Turbro Customer Service. They were quite responsive, with same-day replies. I tried to get them to price-match the white one to the price on the black model, but to NO-avail! They were nice about it though.

They have a "12th Anniversary" sale with a day counter, now showing 14 days ('til Sunday Nov 2nd?). The $400-off promo could end at anytime, but is likely part of their anniversary sale.

No, the Turbro unit is identical to the Pioneer. And while much quieter than the Dometic, it's not as quiet as the Atmos and some others. On the plus side, it runs on about half the watts or less than standard compressor models and it's a heat pump too.

As for the continuous fan run when in Cool Mode, not a concern of mine. If ever a spike in cabin humidity is detected, Dry Mode is activated which rapidly drops the moisture level. However, a small room dehumidifier helps to mitigate such issue and high cabin humidity is a rare occurrence.

I’m going to do a 180° on the above statement and explain why. Granted the Atmos 4.4 is really quite even in fan Turbo Mode, which is generally only used to initially cool down a very hot interior. Once a temperature comfort level is reached, fan Low Mode is all needed. Regardless of the selected fan speed or a/c demand, this unit operates at such a low dB in all modes and the soft start-assisted compressor is hardly detected when running and thus, “the continuous fan run when in Cool Mode” is not bothersome, unlike the former DPll noise maker! Although Dry Mode is very efficient in regulating humidity for short runtime durations, it is not a panacea for control of the dreaded humidity spikes that can occur under high RH or ‘other conditions’. For example, while sleeping at night with the a/c in fan Low Mode, I would often awake to high cabin humidity levels simply due to respiration and thus, my statement that “high cabin humidity is a rare occurrence” is not true as once thought!  Why the turnaround then? After eight months post Atmos 4.4 install and thinking ‘it doesn’t get any better than this’, I came across the Cielo Breez Max smart thermostat and set a new norm! Now six months in and no regrets, I’m thinking ‘this is the best ever’; no continuous fan, no humidity spikes, no ‘noisy’ dehumidifier taking up counter space and Comfy Mode is only a switch flip away! If you are reading this you likely have also read my praise of and experiences with said Cielo, or that of others. The installation is simple, operation intuitive and easily programmed to most a/c units with IR remotes.

The Houghton and Dreiha Atmos are on the table too, they are getting good reviews!

The Houghton is a great unit that is rated for 122 degrees F.  I recommend it based upon it's performance excellent design.  However as of this date, the supplier's web site indicates that the manufacturer still has not addressed the need for a remote thermistor and relay to shut down the fan when the compressor shuts off.

There are two published Mods that correct these topics and they work well.  But are not recommended for most owners to attempt.  Also doing so of course violates the 2-year warranty.  As such, I recommend coordination with RecPro for them to accomplish Mods 1 and Mod 2 before delivery and to honor the 2-year warrant.  You will need a thermistor with at least a 10-foot lead.  See OTT Forum posts on this topic for more info.

If they would do so, I believe their Houghton unit would be an outstanding unit for our OE2's.  We  have used ours for three seasons in temp's over 105 degrees in full sun.   Zero problems.

Have they actually ever performed this mod at RecPro for anyone before?

Still wondering if the Cielo thermostat could shut down the fan with the compressor on this unit like it does on the Atmos. They'd probably sell a lot more of the Houghton's if you could skip the mods and just add a thermostat to it.

I heard from an inside source a couple of years ago that their Tech guy was doing relay mod.  I have not checked back with them since.

As far as adapting one to the Cielo, or just doing the two mods at RECPRO or having the factory do so WOULD for sure sell a LOT of units.

The Ceilo Breez Max smart thermostat claims to be compatible with a/c units having IR remote capability and thus, Houghton models with said remote should adapt; the Truma Aventa comes with an IR remote and should adapt, as well. Conversely the Dometic Penguin ll does not come with a remote, nor is one available as a separate option, but rather hardwired to a wall thermostat thereby rendering it incompatible with the Cielo. Still waiting for a Houghton and Truma owner to up their game and give the Cielo a go! The setup is so simple; download the Cielo phone app, plug into a USB port to power the Cielo, follow instructions to pair the IR remote, operate the a/c via the Cielo’s touchscreen or phone app. If found to be incompatible, do an Amazon return! ‘Nuff said.

I have high confidence that the Ceilo will work to control these units, the big question is will it override the built-in fan control that keeps the fan running when the compressor shuts down?

The Cielo doesn’t override a unit’s fan control, but rather turns supply power completely off or on with each cycle of the compressor when programmed in Comfy Mode. When a set temperature is reached a total shutdown occurs; there is no power to run anything, compressor or fan. Subsequently when a programmed setpoint limit is reached, the Cielo restores power and the compressor and fan startup in sync.

Short version:  WOW good news.

Why:

The Houghton's sense the delta T between the set point and the thermistor reading.  For not modified units, the thermistor is in the return air path of the inside the cabin plenum.  If in auto mode the fan will run high when there is a large delta T.  As the cabin cools it will switch to medium, and then low fan speed.  That said, many of us just run the unit on low speed.  Either way, the unit would be running on low fan speed when the set point is reached.

The Ciello shutting the unit down would do so when the unit is expecting to be shut down.  This would be good.  The consecuences of such though would be:

  • Loss of the periodic "Stirring" of the cabin air.  (A good thing in my opinion as it can be annoying especially when sleeping)
  • No change in the short cycling of the unit due to the thermistor location in the air plenum.  This would still require the Mod to relo the thermistor to a location actually in the cabin area several feet from the unit.  (In my case I used a 10' long thermistor to place the thermistor at the fore end of the streetside bed.  This is a relatively easy mod as compared to the relay mod for fan control.  However it does require an unusual way to get there.
  • Not being assured that the control board does not have a problem with repeated full power shut down when cycling.

My two cents assuming the Cielo power cycling "does no harm" to the control board:  The Houghton would only need the thermistor relo mod.  It becomes "Doable" for "handy owners".  With the mod, the Houghton and Cielo would provide an ultra quiet reliable unit that also can run in extremely hot conditions (122 degrees F per RecPro web site).

It appears to be a game changer for Houghton and RecPro.

The Atmos is the same, being inside at one of the intake filter locations. From reading one of your past posts, I decided to move mine out to open cabin and left it like that for no particular reason other than things are working great. Now that I have some experience and know what to expect, I may move it back to see if there is any difference.
