Porch light black plague

Recommended Posts

Thought we had escaped the porch light black plague. After returning from a small trip that included camping under oak trees, dampish weather, and over 50 miles of dirt roads, the camper needed a bath. We have not noticed any issue before and had hoped we had escaped the plague. We used a name brand wash and wax, and as soon as we touched the light with the soft brush we saw the black streaks. They rinsed right off. However, we also saw some slight black streaks, though not as severe, coming off which we assume was the battery door gasket. We hope that was just accumulated scum. Now we wait for it to all dry and apply the Aquarium sealer that Oliver provided. I had not noticed any streaking during yesterday's rain. Wonder if wash/wax we used was the starting cause???

I'd be willing to bet that it really doesn't matter much which wash/wax you used.  Think about this: do any of the gaskets on you car/truck cause black streaks after you have used that same wash/wax on them?  And, with the number of us that have had the "black streak" problem what are the odds that all of us would have used the "wrong" wash/wax item?

Nope, you got the same thing the rest of us have had to deal with.  Fortunately, so far, the sealer provided by Oliver has worked to stop the streaking.  Also, I understand that Captain Tolly's Crack Cure/Cream/Stuff works to stop the issue.

Just let things dry nicely and have at it.  The job really doesn't take long and is not that difficult.

Yes, Bill is correct: It doesn't depend on what product you use to wash the trailer; the black streaks are endemic to the gaskets used to attach the porch lights. We hadn't noticed any black streaks after many rains. However, we recently spent some time washing our Ollie. We had previously sealed the top of the light gaskets with the DAP product recommended. However, when the water and soap touched the bottom of the gaskets, the black gunk quickly spread. We now know that we have to go back and apply the sealant under, as well as above, the gaskets.

Mustang,

I'd call or email Richie Carroll (just recently took Jason's place who assumed other duties over in the plant) at rcarroll@olivertraveltrailers.com or 931-306-9232 and ask if he could send you a tube of the sealant they gave our at the owner's rally in May.  It really is easy to spread a little on each of the black gaskets.

I met Richie during my visit just the other day.  I thought he told me he was over quality control.  Is he doing service now?
