Camel Camel Camel

Some time ago I posted about camelcamelcamel amazon price tracker, a web site that allows you to see price changes over time on specific Amazon products. You can also set up alerts for price drops for a good deal on camelcamelcamel. It is my impression that a number of Oliver Forum users use camelcamelcamel to track price changes for travel trailers> products.

I went to the camelcamelcamel web site today to see about product prices, but they are down, because of multiple hard disk failures. They are asking for users to donate via PayPal, so that they can replace their hard disks.

I use camelcamelcamel all the time, so I made a donation. It is like making a donation to the Wikimedia Foundation that supports Wikipedia. I use Wikipedia regularly, so I make regular donations to them.

Interesting.

“Due to the shared age of the failed and remaining disks, we are replacing all 12 of the disks (plus 2 spares), not just those that failed. That's 14x Samsung 860 Pro 4TB drives, plus a new RAID card.”

It would seem prudent to proactively replace a couple of drives every year and use the very newest for data backup. Having a bunch of old drives is a recipe for this kind of disaster. I wonder how old they are, in years? I guess they learned that lesson....

What is the MTBF of professional drives? I have no idea....

John D:

According to Dell, the MTBF of servers in commercial applications varies widely based upon the ambient conditions, load andn setup.  That said, for five of their best ones it is about 250,000 hours.  A fun read about this topic can be found at:

GJ, thanks so much but I remain clueless. I guess this image from your report sums up my understanding of it:

I use Backblaze for remote backup of my server and they issue regular reports on failure rates for the various brands of the over 100,000 hard drives used in their servers. I’ve switched to SSD now but prior to that, these reports were a great resource when it came to choosing a drive.  The only HDs I’ve ever had fail were OEM.

Kudos to Backblaze for being so open about their operations. I have zero complaints about their software or service. Anyone looking for a remote backup solution would be wise to check them out.
