Dave and Cindy Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 We are not able to attend the rally but are heading to Alaska on May 29th with a couple stops along the way. We are planning SE Alaska via Haines, Wrangle-St Elias, Sitka, Valdez, Kenai with bear flight to Katmai, Denali, Barrow and more. We post daily on www.twolanetouring.com so maybe we will run into each other. Small place I hear:) 1 Dave & Cindy #076 Photographer * Traveler www.twolanetouring.com Posting Daily - National Parks, Camping and more.
Moderator+ ScubaRx Posted April 30, 2019 Moderator+ Posted April 30, 2019 That is our plan. When we travel, we go to as many National Park units as possible so we tend to meander. This will be our first Alaskan foray. How long do you guys plan to be gone? 1 Steve, Tali and our dog Rocky plus our beloved dogs Storm, Lucy, Maggie and Reacher (all waiting at the Rainbow Bridge) 2008 Legacy Elite I - Outlaw Oliver, Hull #026 | 2014 Legacy Elite II - Outlaw Oliver, Hull #050 | 2022 Silverado High Country 3500HD SRW Diesel 4x4
ShallowGal Posted April 30, 2019 Author Posted April 30, 2019 We are planning SE Alaska via Haines, I'm so sorry you won't be at the rally. Our youngest son lives in Haines & we estimate we will be there mid July. We will definitely follow your blog & do hope to run into you somewhere up there! ShallowGal Posted April 30, 2019 Author Posted April 30, 2019 Steve & Tali, we are meandering too & plan to get to Haines by mid July. Then spend about a month in AK & meander home, possibly through the U.P., following the leaf change back home to FL. 5 - 6 months. Can we get together during the Rally? Would love to see how you've prepped. Chris Chris & Duke Chadwell 🐾Maddie & Baxter🐾 Elite II Hull 292 2022 F-250 Lariat 7.3 Godzilla 4x4 Lakeland,FL
Dave and Cindy Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 Our time frame is to leave May 29, we plan a stop at two NPS sites in Northern Nebraska, the five S/W South Dakota Parks, Devils Tower and on to Dickenson to visits some friends, across MT on route 2 and a week in Banff and Jasper. We will arrive in Haines about the 19th or 20th of June, we fly from Haines to Sitka on 6/23-25 then on to Valdez and Wrangle about 7/4. We are unscheduled then until three nights in Denali on 7/15-18 at Teklanika (sp) we head then to the Kenai and a trip to Katmai to see bears. We are unscheduled until 8/9 when we head to Seward, then back to Homer then back to Denali until 8/23. The plan then is to stay until weather suggests it is time to leave and head to Vancouver, then Washington, Idaho parks and back to NC. We also hope to fly to Barrow for a day, Glacier Bay and Lake Clark. Planning on at least 9 NP units in AK and may try a couple more if we can figure it out. Any of that match any of your plans? ShallowGal Posted May 5, 2019 Author Posted May 5, 2019 Well, I am extremely sad to say that due to both of us needing cataract surgery, the Rally is a no-go for us. However, Alaska is still on, just a bit delayed. Original plan was to get to Haines, where our son lives, in mid-July but now it will be a week or so later. Like ScubaRX, we are meandering with no particular timelines. DenaliDavid, your offer is wonderful, kind, & greatly appreciated. We will contact you when we do have a timeline. Enjoy the Rally everyone! Chris Chris & Duke Chadwell 🐾Maddie & Baxter🐾 Elite II Hull 292 2022 F-250 Lariat 7.3 Godzilla 4x4 Lakeland,FL
ShallowGal Posted July 13, 2019 Author Posted July 13, 2019 Hello Alaska travelers! Duke & I have finally made it to the panhandle of Idaho & will cross into Canada Monday. We were curious about how your travels are going & wondering how much the wildfires are affecting your trip. We do hope you are having a grand time & that we'll cross paths. Moderators SeaDawg Posted July 16, 2019 Moderators Posted July 16, 2019 Great to hear from you! Only about 2000 miles to the Alaska border now. Which route did you decude to take after you cross the Canadian border? We didn't make the Alaska trip again this year. Have you heard from Scubarx? Seems like about a week ago they were in Grande Prairie. We'd love to see some photos when you have the time, and signal strength! Safe travels. Moderator+ ScubaRx Posted July 16, 2019 Moderator+ Posted July 16, 2019 We did not have a single clear day during the month we were in Alaska. There are currently 50 something fires burning unabated. Their plan is to just let most of them burn. The area around Anchorage and south toward Seward and Homer was like a thick fog. Burned our eyes and nose and made it difficult to breathe. Denali National Park was a complete wash. Besides all that, the extreme heat was breaking century old records. We picked a poor year to go to Alaska. Moderators Mike and Carol Posted July 16, 2019 Moderators Posted July 16, 2019 Sorry to hear that Steve, disappointing news. I’ve read about the record breaking heat but not the fires. Have a safe trip back. Mike Texas Hill Country | 2016 Elite II #135 | 2020 Ram 2500 6.7L
Moderators SeaDawg Posted July 16, 2019 Moderators Posted July 16, 2019 Wow, sorry to hear that news. I, too, had heard about the heat, but not the fires. The report I read tonight indicates most of the fires were started by lightning. Hope all of you traveling are being careful. Overland Posted July 16, 2019 Posted July 16, 2019 That does suck. Part of the new norm I guess. I’m guessing the best way to see AK right now is online. Bears anyone?
ShallowGal Posted July 16, 2019 Author Posted July 16, 2019 Goodness Steve & Tali, I'm so sorry to hear your Alaska adventure was spoiled. Hopefully getting there was filled with jaw-dropping scenery. Maybe our 2-month delay will be a good thing. Currently, in Golden, BC resting up for Banff & Jasper. Safe travels everyone!
