John E Davies Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 (edited) The American boat is out after the Semi Finals Day 2, they crashed hard in an earlier trial and put a big hole in the hull. They were fast though, they posted the fastest speed of 53 knots (61 mph) on Day 1 in very strong winds. This is pretty good coverage of that day. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rPmeg70tVtM I love watching these pull away from the support and camera chase boats. Those have to cut across the course before the marks to catch up. Moderators topgun2 Posted February 4, 2021 Moderators Posted February 4, 2021 Yep - been watching it too. Certainly this is a very "different" type of "sailing". But, still interesting to watch. Indeed, that American boat was fast but apparently not as stable as the Italian boat. And, it really did appear that the Americans were out-sailed in virtually all aspects and that was even before the hole in the boat deal (caused by the Americans taking a very risky move when they were in the lead of that race). Hopefully we will learn from this poor showing. Bill 2023 Ford F150 Lariat 3.5EB FX4 Max Towing, Max Payload, 2016 Oliver Elite II - Hull #117 "Twist" Near Asheville, NC
Moderators SeaDawg Posted February 4, 2021 Moderators Posted February 4, 2021 Yes, we've been watching.. It's been a real bummer for usa. But, as always in the sailing (and camping) community, everyone reached out and helped when the foil broke away last week. Thank you, especially, New Zealand! John E Davies Posted February 13, 2021 Author Posted February 13, 2021 (edited) Maybe we should resurrect the old airplane term "flying boat"? Or a kind of hover plane?
