Moderators topgun2 Posted Wednesday at 03:37 PM Moderators Posted Wednesday at 03:37 PM In doing some map research I stumbled across a couple of updates to Garmin devices that are currently available. The first is an update to IOverlander's points of interests and the second is a fairly substantial update of North American Maps. As usual, Garmin Express can be used to perform these updates or WiFi can be used if your Garmin device is equipped for it. HDRider Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago What navigation options are available for that? I have other Garmins and now the only nav option is fastest route on the newer ones. HDRider Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago Is all this true on the newest Garmin RV Navigator? I am really pissed at what Garmin did on the other GPSs. They basically only have an option of "Fastest Route". In addition to the standard Fastest Route (or Faster Time) calculation mode, Garmin RV navigators provide several alternative calculation modes, routing features, and custom parameters designed specifically for long-distance travel and large-vehicle safety: 1. Alternative Calculation Modes Shorter Distance: Calculates the route based on the minimum driving distance between your start point and destination. Note: While it reduces total miles, it may increase driving time or take slower secondary roads. Off Road / Straight Line: Draws a direct "as-the-crow-flies" bearing line between points without following established road data. Less Fuel / ecoRoute: Uses posted speed limits and distance metrics to calculate the most fuel-efficient route (available on models equipped with ecoRoute features and a complete vehicle profile). Turn-by-Turn / Scenic Routing: Featured on select newer models (such as the RV 795, 895, 1095 series), this mode prioritizes picturesque roads, scenic updates, or specific local road network types over standard highway routes. 2. Custom RV Safety & Profile Routing Beyond simple distance/speed settings, Garmin RV units filter routes based on custom vehicle parameters to prevent hazardous driving situations: Custom Vehicle Profile Routing: Calculates paths based on your rig’s specific dimensions (height, weight, length, width, and trailer status) to automatically avoid low bridges, weight-restricted bridges, and tight turns. Environmental & Low Emission Zones: Routes around specific regions with emissions restrictions or zero-emission zones (primarily for European travel). 3. Route Customization Tools Route Shaping / Easy Route Shaping: Allows you to manually tap the map screen to drag and mold a calculated route through preferred towns, highways, or scenic points without adding permanent waypoints. Custom Avoidances: Lets you specify specific roads, areas, or highways you want the system to ignore during calculation. Toggleable Avoidances: Turn on or off preferences to avoid features such as: Toll roads and fees Expressways / Interstate highways Unpaved / Dirt roads Ferries and car shuttles Jeff & Cindy - NE Arkansas - 2023 Legacy Elite II - Twin Bed - Hull #1423 TV - 2015 Silverado 2500 Duramax 4x4
rideandfly Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago We have a Garmin RV 780 that has been discontinued. Use it mostly to find campgrounds, but it has many neat features. https://www.garmin.com/en-CA/p/660527/ Here's the current Garmin RV navigator: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/850475/ 1 Bill 2015 LE2 2024 F-350 6.8L

This sounds similar to the Google map navigation which seems greatly degraded over the course of this summer. I was considering buying a Garmin... It does state on the website, "RV 795 considers the size and weight of your RV then finds a recommended route1. And you can save profiles for multiple vehicles or trailers." The footnote #1 says, "Not available in all areas. Entering your RV or trailer profile characteristics does not guarantee your RV’s characteristics will be accounted for in all route suggestions. Always defer to all posted road signs and road conditions." @mossemi isn't this the current version of the unit you showed me? I have been using it for a year and I have been quite pleased with it. It may be the 10th Garmin that I have owned. I have not noticed the issue of only being offered the 'fastest route', but I don’t think I am on the new load that @topgun2 has referenced above. Without it, my 2019 F-150 navagation was useless. I pulled out my RV 780 which fortunately I had updated during the summer of 2025. It work wondefully. Hopefully Garmin will continue to allow updates and support battery upgrades.
