John E Davies Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 I encountered this stick and staple tandem axle trailer and was impressed with the rear bumper rack. It appears to be attached to the frame and has three steel support bars. I am not sure how much weight is there... the generator with battery is probably about 100 pounds. A couple of full propane bottles, a home sized bbq grill, a big box full of unknown gear..... Any guesses on how much total weight, and what effect it has on the tongue weight? I especially like the cheap open style hardware store eyebolts ( with a working load of 150 pounds, if that) and the dinky steel cables going up to the trailer corner uprights..... which are probably 2x2” pine. And the small sun rotted straps holding everything down. At least he used a lot of them. Yikes. Vector - Lanham Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Could be a lethal combination for someone following that dude up a steep gradient. Ouch. John E Davies Posted December 12, 2019 Author Posted December 12, 2019 LOL, that upper eyebolt looks a little stretched, I did not see that before..... Trainman Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 If I had to carry all that stuff with me I would just stay home. trainman 1 2019 RAM 1500, 5.7 Hemi, 4X4, Crew Cab, 5'7" bed, Towing Package, 3.92 Gears. Oliver was sold.
DavePhelps Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 Yea, I saw that upper eyebolt right off. Ughh. You want to keep well away from rigs like that. Really, I think any passing Police Officer should ticket the owners of such negligent and dangerous setups. Dave 1 1 2015 Oliver Elite, Hull 107 1998 Ford E-250, 5.4 liter
JPatrickJ Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 That setup looks extremely scary! Too much weight on the back, not enough on the tongue could make for a very unstable towing situation. And that stretched out screw is just an accident waiting to happen!

Had weird electrical problems, circuits with breakers thrown still carried some current (possible fire). Leaked (flood). Mildew from leak gave me cold-like symptoms (pestilence). Newshoes Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 i would guess at close to 500lbs on the "shelf". Its amazing that the I "screws" are still holding on to the 2x2's. I doubt they are bolted thru the corner uprights. Seeing that mess is how nature says "stay away"! 2019 Legacy Elite #431; 2019. TV 2019 GMC Canyon Denali, crew cab, 4X4, Long bed, Duramax Diesel.
John E Davies Posted June 1, 2020 Author Posted June 1, 2020 (edited) This 17 foot single axle Viking appeared in Craigslist. It has a big aluminum box, a battery and a big junk generator, all bolted directly to that thin sheet metal bumper. Do you think it has any tongue weight at all? OTH it is probably very easy to push around by hand.... I especially admire the craftsmanship of the generator rain cover, the secure supports for the shore power cable, and the battery cover held down by the license plate! I wonder if he tows with the cable there? Perhaps so he can run the AC while moving, with his dogs and children inside?
