  1. What is Galvanic Reaction? - When two dissimilar metals are in contact and exposed to an electrolyte substance it causes one of the metals to lose ions and slowly consumes that metal. - It works much like a battery. One of the metals will become and act like an Anode(Negative) and the other a Cathode(Positive). This process will slowly consume the Anode and actually strengthen the Cathode. - Galvanic reaction occurs when an electrolyte combines with water. Depending on which electrolyte is present, it will completely(strong) or partially (weak) ionize with the water to form a strong or weak electrolyte substance. What is an electrolyte substance? Strong Acids Examples: Hydrochloric Acid, Sulfuric Acid, and other Acids Strong Bases Examples: Sodium Hydroxide, Calcium Hydroxide, and other Hydroxides. Salts Sodium Chloride Winter Road Treatment: - Different cities utilize a handful of different chemicals to treat roadways for ice. Most of these are from a form of chloride which does become an electrolyte once dissolved with water. TIP: It is always a good idea to clean these chemicals from any vehicle and/or camper when possible. What type of impact does this play on Aluminum? - When oxygen is present (in water), aluminum naturally reacts to form aluminum oxide and this is the key to its ability to resist corrosion. Unless exposed to a substance or condition in which destroys the protective layer, aluminum will remain resistant to corrosion. - When aluminum contacts another metal(steel for example), it sets in place the possibility of a galvanic reaction if an electrolyte substance comes in contact with the metals. What does Oliver do to prevent this natural process? A protective layer, cavity spray, is placed between the two metals. Zinc anodes are attached to the aluminum frame The Zinc becomes the anode part of the equation and if the galvanic reaction process takes place, it will consume the Zinc anode instead of the aluminum frame. How often should I check my Anodes? - Depending on where you live or where you travel you may or may not even have a galvanic reaction but it is still a good idea to inspect your anodes at least once a year and more if you start to notice that the anode is deteriorating.

  3. Buzzy, thanks for the kind words. The moderator team has done a great job over the years - before we even knew what an Oliver was! I hope I can help them keep this forum friendly, helpful and entertaining. We've learned so much here and met some wonderful people. Looking forward to meeting everyone that attends the rally! Mike

  4. Agree, going to cut a couple 2x6s to get close to level on the low side of the Ollie on a sloped sites and stabilize with jacks. I still put all Ollie jacks down (unless connected to the TV) and lift the side just high enough and long enough to remove/replace a wheel/hub with the wheels chocked on other side.

  5. Welcome to the group! As Buzzy said you're joining a team, and there is plenty of "Oliver" expertise here to share. The factory tour was the deciding factor for us, too. If you can make it to the Rally we'd all enjoy meeting you. Mike

  7. Hi Hikegsm, I was moved by your thoughtful introduction. Like yourself, I experienced a very similar journey in deciding to purchase my Ollie. In many ways, buying an Ollie is so much more than simply buying a piece of camping equipment. As a future owner, you need to know there is a team who can help as the inevitable questions or concerns arise. That team communicates via the Oliver Forum. This is our neighborhood. It is far more than existing owners. It also includes Oliver staff, component product technicians, curious potential owners and future owners like yourself. Please continue to post your observations as well as any questions or concerns. Welcome to the neighborhood! Buzzy

  8. Hello & Welcome :) We started our Fiberglass RV binge out with a Casita also and then started saving up for our Oliver that we just picked up last month. This 4 season trailer really is the best of the best and you guys will be really happy :) It's big enough and comfortable enough to live in full time with room to spare, yet still tows like a dream behind many smaller crossover SUV's :)

  9. Welcome to the growing Oliver family of owners. Hope you are planning on joining the Rally in real early May. You should be able to learn a lot, and even meet some of the pioneers that make the forum great. If your new unit isn't done yet I bet they let you in with your old unit. Maybe if you ask they could deliver at the Rally? At least your travel distance would be less than some. Again...Welcome...
