This unit "stands tall" at about 14", a good 5" taller than our OEM Dometic. A hard deal killer for besome owners for sure. Agreed, but... Looking at the specs I see a 3.25" difference (14.5" - 11.25"). It would be 5" to your low-profile Houghton. I promised @Tideline77 measurements which I took yesterday. My son Adam climbed up the scaffolding and place an 8' 1x3" on top of the A/C unit hanging off to the curbside. I measured the height and did not believe the number, so I measured it in the same way off the streetside, same number! I measured exactly 9' 8.5" on BOTH sides! The 5" increase is from my Houghton A/C height. JD's remeasured and it is 3.25" higher than the Dometic Penguin II. In our case, there is no way I could back it into our storage area. Especially since there is a ramp at the entrance and that kicks the area behind Ollie's axles up even further. So if height of your storage areas is close, it would be wise to double check. Thank you Mossey, for this information! I don’t follow tech news much, just research what I need when I’m working on something. I’d hate to be contrary, but I believe this product hit the market last year! It has other brand names like Turbro and Pioneer! It sure looks like these models (in shape and position of condenser fan). This is likely another clone. Too bad, but TBD! 😎 Chris & John in Prescott, AZ | 2016 EII #113 | '01 Ram 2500 Cummins!

The heat pump function puts out 17k so maybe they're taking using the average Btu's between heat and cool? 😂 2010 Elite II Hull #45, the first LE2 sold. 2020 Toyota Tundra TRD Off Road 4WD 5.7 with 38 gallon tank, 4.30 axle and tow package.

jd1923 Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 Back to the subject of the current Furrion Chill Cube, installation notes to follow... First step was to remove the Air Distribution Box (ADB) of the old A/C unit. Spend time cleaning the roof after removal. I had removed the old unit, plugged the 14x14” opening, prior to having the Oliver cleaned, stripped, buffed and ceramic coating. The new A/C unit is now mounted on a perfectly polished roof. At least clean the opening well so the new units seals well. Oh man, as usual, OTT with their drill-happy installers, we now have eight (8) drill holes in our ceiling! To date, I’ve had to fill over 30+ holes in interior and exterior holes in the fiberglass (beside here, the thermostat, the old inverter switch, the corner TV mount, the sat dish, Wi-Fi Ranger, both exterior cameras, etc.) OMG! Fortunately, new models like the Turbro and Furrion Chill Cube mount the ADB to the interior frame that’s bolted to the outside unit. If I had installed the original Dometic P2, I would have figured out a work-around, bolt to the frame or if need use 3M VHB on the edges vs. 8 screws. First measure the thickness of the opening (pic1) to know how much to trim the air baffle that fits inside. Cut off the thermostat wiring connectors and push remaining wiring and condensate drain plumbing into the ceiling, leaving only the 12 AWG 120VAC Romex wiring. Then I covered the opening with 3M 3350, a thin foil duct tape. I used one 14” length above and below wrapping about 1/2" on the roof and ceiling so it would stay sealed (pic2). 2 Chris & John in Prescott, AZ | 2016 EII #113 | '01 Ram 2500 Cummins!
jd1923 Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 Adam and I got up on the scaffold to remove the defective (and refunded) Turbro unit. We set one scaffold cross beam and the same height as the roof so to have a place to rest the A/C on the way down. When we picked up the new Chill Cube, Adam said, “Wow, this one is light!” (Turbro weighs 88.2 LBS and the P2 was heavier, the Chill Cube is 72.4 LBS.) It’s also easier to maneuver with it’s tall square shape, foot-print about 60% of the others. I forget a bath towel like we used last time, so I took off my jacket to have something to help slide the top unit into place. Then inside, I pushed up on the A/C and pulled the jacket down through the opening. Screwed in the four corner bolts, to see and align the exterior unit over the opening. You don’t need the air baffle extension, and the primary hard foam baffle must be trimmed. I trimmed ours about 1/2". When you measure, realize the foam seal on the exterior unit once torqued should also be 1/2". If you trim too much (bad mistake) you will have a gap between the warm in and the cold air out! Better to error on trimming too little, but if it’s too tall it will be pushed up against a hard plate and could crush. I first cut only 1/4" off and it contacted the upper plate before the foam seal compressed at all. I then knew another 1/4" had to be trimmed. Better to do it twice, than to over cut! (many pics to follow) I was not able to use the 120VAC connector they supplied and used standard wire nuts instead. I also made a hole into the foam baffle to get the Romex into the center area. I moved the wire clamps to be usable based on the where the Romex was installed. Not easy to fit all the wires in the narrow center area. The extra length of some cables can be inserted into the junction box. The main thing is you have to feel the center mounting screw will seat without any wiring obstructing it. The instructions say to use the long screws for the plastic air handler, but they do not supply any! I used two long screws I had to get started, but once the plastic cover snapped into the metal frame all I needed was 5 of the supplied 1/2" screws. Mount the filter components and you’re done! (Notice the screw holes in last pic. I still need to patch the ceiling fiberglass.) 2 2 Chris & John in Prescott, AZ | 2016 EII #113 | '01 Ram 2500 Cummins!
Moderators Mike and Carol Posted January 16 Moderators Posted January 16 Looks like that went pretty smoothly! Although it doesn’t look too complicated I’m not sure I could handle the weight of the units with no scaffolding. I don’t think the Furrion looks too tall and I’m sure the decreased noise level will be appreciated! What do you use to fill the various holes left from old installs? Before I had the scaffolding we installed an A/C on our Bigfoot. Adam climbed up the ladder on the big Class-C. There was an old Dometic up top where the fan had jammed. I instructed him to heave the old unit off the side, hit the gravel drive and nothing else! 🤣 I had the new A/C still in the shipping box bottom, tied a strap around it sitting at the bottom of an extension ladder. He pulled the strap as I walked it up the ladder. Either way you need two people. I'm not walking on top the Oliver, so my scaffolding investment has been helpful. When not in use, the upper section is stored away but the bottom frame sits around the nose of a car parked in our garage. I use the shelf for shipments in and out and empty boxes, it's been a handy staging shelf. You can always use more counter space! https://www.homedepot.com/p/MetalTech-Safeclimb-6-ft-Baker-Scaffold-with-Platform-and-Included-Trap-Door-1250-lbs-Load-Capacity-I-CISCH1/302038304 Or you can rent if you do not want to purchase and make room for one. This rental page shows a double set and outriggers like I purchased, plus the upper safety surround: https://www.homedepot.com/p/rental/Interior-Scaffold-I-TCISCH1/316821794 I'm on my 3rd jar of Marine-Tex with all the holes I've filled. Simple to use and the color is very close to our hulls, at least the older ones. I can't easily see the large holes I filled from where the TV was mounted in the corner originally. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0014419V0/ I have some ready but will wait 'til we return from camping in a few weeks to fill these eight small holes. I'll need to drill a recessed bevel first making a shallow wider opening to better take and level the fill. I have other work too that needs a second coat, where before I removed the rear camera, the bathroom gray valve handle (replaced with electric valve), and the door latch that was riveted bottom right of the entrance (don't need it after adding Lippert Friction Hinges)! You need a second coat after the first shrinks. She's getting cleaner all the time! 😎 Edited January 16 by jd1923 1 1 Chris & John in Prescott, AZ | 2016 EII #113 | '01 Ram 2500 Cummins!
OffWeGo Posted yesterday at 12:42 PM Posted yesterday at 12:42 PM Just wanted to check in and let everyone know the Chill Cube with Heat Pump is now available at United RV Parts in Texas. Looks exactly like the Chill Cube (not low profile). I should have mine installed today! I'm following instructions posted by @jd1923 and everything is going well. I was even able to get the old Dometic off the roof by myself by leaning an 8' step ladder against the street side and carefully sliding it down. Having the top of the step ladder near the edge of the roof made it easy to slowly work it off onto the ladder. The gasket on the bottom of the unit also helps to offer some resistance on the way down. I have the Dometic Penguin II (low hours, works perfectly) on FB Marketplace in Central Florida if anyone needs a replacement. Can't wait to get this Chill Cube fired up! 4 2022 LE II Hull #1120, 2023 Tundra 4x4
OffWeGo Posted yesterday at 03:22 PM Posted yesterday at 03:22 PM Mounting the Chill Cube this morning and finding a slight interference with the “bump” that supported the Dometic. Anybody know if this can be removed and how difficult it is to take off? If not, I can modify the mounting feet on the new unit to allow it to sit down. Hate to cut up a brand new ac if I don’t have to! 2022 LE II Hull #1120, 2023 Tundra 4x4
OffWeGo Posted yesterday at 03:50 PM Posted yesterday at 03:50 PM I just spoke with Oliver Tech Support and they said they don't recommend removing the bump. I asked if there is gelcoat below the bump and they said there is. I asked if there is a hole below the bump and they said no. If I'm not mistaken, the only purpose served by the bump is to support the rear of the Penguin II. If anybody can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it. 2022 LE II Hull #1120, 2023 Tundra 4x4

Anybody know if this can be removed and how difficult it is to take off? Paul, that's a strange "bump" or platform that mine did not have. You can see in my installation picture above the roof is smooth. On our hull they merely made the rear legs of the P2 taller, since the roof slopes down. Good thing is the Chill cube is almost a foot shorter, when installed it sits only on the flat forward section. Anything can be removed and my guess is it's just glued down. OTT doesn't suggest removing it! 🤣 Likely, only because they do not want to suggest a liability and nobody working there today has any idea of how it was installed. If it was me, I would take another day or two and delete that platform. It's not pretty! I would remove the silicone caulk, scrape and use acetone. Then I would slowly pry up around the edges, and spend some time cleaning up the roof. 😎 Chris & John in Prescott, AZ | 2016 EII #113 | '01 Ram 2500 Cummins!
OffWeGo Posted yesterday at 04:26 PM Posted yesterday at 04:26 PM Thanks for the quick response. I'm in total agreement with you. I'm really surprised at the response from Oliver, but, as you said, they probably don't want the liability. 1 2022 LE II Hull #1120, 2023 Tundra 4x4

This one is not cheaper ($412 more than I paid for the Chill Cube w/o heat pump). Though heat pump functionality would be good backup heat for our hull and for Chris @CRM if this was available, he may have gone this route vs. the Turbro. For them, a heat pump was a mandatory requirement. Hope removal of your rear A/C platform goes well. OffWeGo Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago I wasn't sure I wanted the heat pump until I watched install videos from some very seasoned RVrs, and they both said they really loved the heat pump. At today's prices it was a $230 difference, so I figured I would go for it. As for what's under the bump on the roof...there are two globs of resin under the front end of the bump that are roughly 2" x 3". I haven't figured out a way to remove these without damaging the gelcoat. I might just repostion the bump an inch or two toward the rear to cover them up. I did figure out the slope of the roof from the front of the Chill Cube to the back is about 3 degrees. Furrion says up to 15 degrees in either direction is acceptable, so there is no need for the bump with this unit. Once I tightened the four installation bolts it sat down on the rear support pads the way it should. I got the unit fired up yesterday and its amazing! Not sure what to do to make the furnace work with the Dometic thermostat, or if I'll have to get a different model. Anybody know the answer to this? 1 2022 LE II Hull #1120, 2023 Tundra 4x4

Not sure what to do to make the furnace work with the Dometic thermostat, or if I'll have to get a different model. Anybody know the answer to this? Before your model came to market, the ductless model that I purchased had no thermostat interface which the ducted version has. If your new model has such interface, you could study the interface and have one wall-mounted thermostat to control both the A/C unit and the furnace. My Chill Cube is operated by remote only which includes the follow-me temp control. Given yours does not have a thermostat interface, you could do what I did with mine or something similar. I removed the Dometic thermostat from the wall above the kitchen sink and replaced it with a simple 2-wire furnace thermostat which I mounted in a different location. I also ran two new 14 AWG wires I had on hand. Original wiring was just pushed into the wall unused, staying where it was. You could also remount a new thermostat in the same place, using the same wiring (grab the 2 furnace wires). BTW, I sold my P2 on Craigs and to sell a complete unit, the Dometic thermostat should really be included. I asked $500 for it, but after it was listed off-season for 2 months, a guy offered me $200 and my reply was CASH today, and he agreed. Glad to get that POS off my property which was sitting outdoors in the Vermont 2-wheel cart we use for yardwork! I always thought where OTT mounted the thermostat made little sense. So often at night, it was to hot or cold and you'd have to get out of bed to change temp. I mounted it in arms reach just under the pantry. I can reach it easily to change temp and Chris can see the actual temp reading from her curbside bed. It always frustrated me that the Dometic thermostat only showed set temp, not actual temp, so I had mounted a Ruuvi sensor above it. I wanted a new furnace thermostat that would display actual temp, so it can be compared to set temp. This is the product I purchased, simple and does the job well! It displays actual temp when idle and set temp when pushing the up/down arrows, go figure. One thing that seems backwards is the ON/OFF switch, where up is OFF and down is ON, where the reverse order would be intuitive. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H6ARNXO This build thread shows pictures of our new thermostat installed and the mask job to cover all the many holes in the wall above the kitchen sink! 😎 Edited 2 hours ago by jd1923 1 Chris & John in Prescott, AZ | 2016 EII #113 | '01 Ram 2500 Cummins!

Here's my final touch. We have a half-dozen remotes in bins mounted front of the nightstand drawer.
