dbp05ret
I tried a search to see if this had been discussed before but got zilch results. Who uses a 1up bicycle carrier? A friend of mine who doesn't own one told me that they are an awesome bicycle carrier rack. I looked at their web page and have exchanged some emails with them. I was thinking about buying the https://www.1up-usa.com/product/2in-heavy-duty-double-bike-rack for the back of my Oliver. I would also need to purchase a hitch expander. This way the rack could be used on the back of my Oliver (1" 1/4), Subaru (1" 1/4) or Tow Vehicle (2")receivers. Prior to this rack coming to my attention, I was considering a Kuat Sherpa 2.0. The 1up seems to be heavier duty and I like the way it appears to be made. Is there anyone who has had first hand experience with 1up? Thanks in advance! Overland
Several of us have them and they've definitely been discussed - the search function here is useless. Short story = highly recommended.
Moderators bugeyedriver Posted January 16, 2019 Moderators Share Posted January 16, 2019 I have the 2" Heavy Duty Single 1UP rack and couldn't be more pleased. With the sun at the right angle., I was able to monitor the bike's shadow while going down the road and over bumps. The bike and rack had zero wobble and both were as solid as a rock. Make sure you check your tongue weight after placing two bikes and the rack behind your trailer so you remain within proper balance. On my short single axle Elite, the tongue weight went from 11 percent to 10 percent of the overall weight on the tongue. [attachment file=bike loaded.jpg] 2 Pete & "Bosker". Bmanges
Nice looking rack...bicycle rack that it. I like that it has a model for the 1.25" hitch on the new Oliver and can be expanded to extra bikes should the need arise. Just can't bond with the aero-wing design..looks shakey. Most platform bike racks would need an adapter which is not optimal (esp at the cost). Sold. 1 Tow with 2018 Chevy Colorado baby Duramax, plug-in solar--dual awnings. dbp05ret
I called 1up and placed the order for my bicycle rack. As I was talking to the sales person, he said that the rack is only made in 2 inch and that I would need to buy the 1 1/4 to 2 inch adapter. I knew that already since the Oliver receiver hitch is 1 1/4. Then he says, when you use an adapter, it will cut the rating of the original receiver hitch in half. I was not aware of that. Well, the sticker on the back of the Oliver near the receiver hitch says "do not exceed 100 pounds". The 1 up rack weighs 46 pounds and our touring bikes weigh approximately 20 lbs apiece. That would be 86 lbs. Using an 1 1/4 to 2" adapter would technically mean that I must buy a rack at this time that comes in a 1 1/4. Therefore, 1 up is out though I am tempted. I told the salesperson that I needed to do more research and did not place the order.
Overland
I think it's really weird that Oliver decided to use a 1.5" receiver on the new rack. I would guess though that you could probably modify a standard Curt receiver so that it could be bolted into the same holes.
BackofBeyond
With just a little aftermarket modification to the "new" Oliver hitch platform the overall load rating can be vastly improved. Its basically the same attachment scheme as the prior unit, minus the actual mounting/rack hardware. Don't let the 1.5" hitch receiver deter you, a competent fabrication/welding shop will be able to economically get you where you need to be. Oliver is extremely conservative in their hitch load ratings...…. Search this forum, there are a few owners with good solutions. Check out bugeyedrivers post/pic as he has a custom hitch mount. Mainiac
Of course you can always get a trailer hitch that mounts on the front of the truck. Then, as you run down the road, you can watch for any wobble. The added benefit is you can maneuver the Oliver into tight spots easier. Should then not upset the balance or hitch weight... Bmanges
the single bike rack would be well within the load limit...glad the spouse rides a folding Ebike! Maybe a visit to “metalhead” is in my future if I need the extension. The “wing” is not an option. 100 lb at limit for the receiver pretty much rules out eBikes on the back. Moderators SeaDawg Posted January 17, 2019 Moderators Share Posted January 17, 2019 That's always an option.. the folding ebike. Paul and I went to the parking lot a few years ago to measure the clearance in the bed. Folding wouldn't wotk for us, upright, with the bed cover. We didn't want to give up the room to place the bikes sideways. After years of towing, we know what has to fit , for us. But, many of you don't need what we carry. Do you think oliver possibly does the smaller rear hitch to limit the change in tongue weight? I'm kind of that opinion... dbp05ret
The hitch on the front of my HD 2500 with bicycle rack is starting to get my attention. There are many benefits of having the rack on the truck at all times.
