Oliver Elite curb weight

Recommended Posts

New guy here. Picking up my Oliver Elite 3/21/2019. Looking for "curb weight" on the trailer and tongue weight so I can bring the right TV for the 1000 mile tow task.

Thanks

We weighed our 2008 Elite many years ago on the way home from a camping trip. Loaded for camping, with two 20 lb propane tankd, our tongue weight was a little over 400 lbs. 420 sticks in my mind. With gear, some grey, black, and fresh water, I think we were around 3550 to 3600 pounds. I probably still have the weigh ticket in the records.

You could call Oliver for your weight, I would think. Then add in your gear and water, propane, etc..

Are you planning to drive the Colorado? Should be a great looking rig. We picked ours up with a Volvo xc90 in 2008, and towed with my stepside 2005 Silverado for awhile, til we got the 4 x4 Ram.

Happy to see a few more Elites on the road. Hope you enjoy yours as much as we have enjoyed our little trailer for the last 11 years.

Sherry

Thanks for the response. I saw somewhere a post that said the Oliver Elite "curb weight " was around 2500 lbs...very skeptical about that. I have an alternative TV of a Porsche Macan S. The factory (porsche) rates the max GVW at around 4500 lbs, Trying to decide which TV  to use for a 700 mile trip; the Denali or the Macan. Post delivery the TV will be the GMC . Will probably use the Porsche as it is a lease vehicle and save the GMC for future adventures. Such a dilemma! However the GMC has built in engine braking and tow mode> HELP!

If it were my choice, I would take the truck. It's winter. You have a towing package, 4 x 4, and, well, it's a truck. :) and, that's my favorite vehicle, towing or not, but especially towing.

The volvo was 4950 towing capacity. It did ok, but we definitely could feel the trailer in the hills. Not so much with either of our trucks.

Yeah, definitely. Take the truck. It's made for the journey. Enjoy your trip!

I agree with Sherry.  The Porche would be a bit more fun on the drive to TN, but, the truck would be better for return.  At least with the truck (considering the entire round trip) weather would not be as much of a concern and weight or hills would be a no brainer.

Got a response from Oliver...Dry weight 3750; Tongue weight around 400lbs. Don't know where someone got the dry weight as 2500!? Taking the Truck! Hope my dog enjoys the 12 hour trip; each way!

I agree that the info about the "curb weight" being 2500 lbs is wildly inaccurate and expect that by the time you get your Elite outfitted for travel it will weigh well north of 4000 pounds.  With a towing capacity of 7600 lbs, your Canyon Duramax Diesel will do just fine. We own a Silverado Duramax and a Canyon Duramax.  While I would not regularly tow our Elite II (it weighs over 7000 lbs) with the Canyon, I would not hesitate to head out anywhere in North America with your setup.  Also, your fuel mileage should be outstanding, we can count on our Canyon to get 34 mpg on a road trip (not towing anything.)  Yours will be a very cool setup.

Picking up Ollie #431 on Thursday 3/21/19. Will compare mileage to Hoenwald TN from Maryland...(looks like 81 South to 40 west) and the mileage towing back, should be interesting. I have consistently seen 31-32 hwy empty at a steady 70 mph. Hoping for perhaps 16? with the Legacy Elite in tow.

If you've been getting 31, thats awesome. I'd expect 20 to 24 towing. Looking forward to your report. Please keep a log. We did paper and pencil for the first few years...

I think your truck and the Oliver elite will be a sweet rig. :)

Will do! it looks like 750 Miles each way. I'll post the results upon return. Spoke with Rodney at Oliver and he says #431 has a CURB WEIGHT of 3800 lbs +/- a few pounds.

I don't expect any additional weight going in the trailer for the return trip (tanks empty; no moonshine!) and maybe 200 lbs for self and baggage (DOG) in the TV. I figure when I get on the road again post arrival in MD, Ollie may be at 4200 with "gotta have's"; (+400lbs) in the trailer ( added essentials) . But going forward traveling solo (+ 40lb dog, generator and misc.) onboard the GMC maybe 400 lbs add 440 lbs tongue weight "junk in the trunk"(added 400 lbs for Ollie)! I should be well below maximizing the "burden" on the GMC.

Travel to Hoenwald 800 miles 29.5 mpg, 350 lbs in the truck averaged 73 mph.

return with a “dry trailer” 3800lbs per Oliver. Average speed 62  mpg 21.3

i know that probably the 3 most important factors relative to real world mileage would  be  weight, speed and terrain. No point in analyzing friction coefficients for various tire pressure or road surfaces, prevailing wind speed or wind direction relative to travel direction Bottom line:  mileage was better than I expected. Looks to me that the Canyon diesel and Oliver Legacy will be a great matchup! Safe to say 30 mpg not towing and 20 mpg towing.

Wind can make a huge difference.  We’ve traveled west to CA and AZ on I-10 through west Texas and back numerous times.  Once, with a head wind of 30+ mph I got about 9 mpg doing 55mph.  The last time we came home (east) with the same type wind at our back I got almost 17 mpg doing 70mph.  Normal towing mpg is around 14 at 65mph.  Mike

I'm definitely jealous of your gas mileage.  Sounds like the Canyon is going to be a good choice for you.  You should hook up the Macan and go for a spin - I'm sure everyone would like to hear how that tows in comparison.

Towing with the Macan with a similar weight load (4000lb boat and trailer) I got 12 mpg on premium fuel. About $0.40 / gallon more than diesel. the tongue weight from the boat really dropped the rear of the Macan
