Longest time between camping trips.

Due to some health problems we have not been camping since April and I am really bummed. And really missing our Oliver. What’s the longest span between camping trips that you guys have had to deal with.

Every winter. Columbus Day to April.

For 10 years we usually had 3 months or less between trips.  This year has been different, also family health issues (not us!) and grandkids are keeping us close to home.  Our last real camping was last October.  I’ve got car seats and a wheel chair in the trunk of my car, kind of explains where we’re at.  

We did make a quick trip to Hohenwald in March for a maintenance item, not really a camping trip.  Mike

Six months, usually in the Winter.

We usually take a trip every couple of months, but since moving to another home and getting the former ready for market it’s been five months and counting! Bummed as well, but occasionally run the a/c on inverter to exercise the batteries and enjoy my morning coffee in the Oliver, stress management!

About three months every autumn since 2021 - but we’re not complaining too much as we’ve been spending that time in Europe and the UK.

Our first year after a short 3-day trip, our Oliver was parked at home for 6 months. I needed that time to rebuild the suspension, replace all belts and hoses, brakes, etc. on our tow vehicle. Hard to travel with the TV up on jack stands!

We're opposite than most. We travel the fall, all winter long and spring and stay home most of the summers. Summers by us are not too hot at 5440 ft elevation but as soon as we go anywhere it gets hot in the lower elevations of the southwest. Summers of 2024 and 2025 the Oliver was home for 3 months at a time receiving all our many upgrade mods.

No big mods this summer since I'm done with all that. Now that we can run A/C for several days on inverter we'll do more summer travel. We've been parked since early May but leaving tomorrow for Walnut Canyon, just east of Flagstaff. Just going for 4 nights, off this week, working next. So, two months now since our last trip.

We enjoy lots of short trips around Arizona. We go camping, boondock often just an hour to a few hours from home, more so now with fuel prices high it's nice to get remote after a short drive.

In 3 years, we have never put our Oliver into a storage state. No RV antifreeze, blow out the water lines when needed. Last winter was so mild it wasn't necessary.

After our trip this week, I have two weeks off Aug-Sept and are planning 2 weeks in SW Colorado. Then another 6 weeks if all goes well we'll head east for The Rally.

Longest time between camping trips?
Going forward, I'd say it will be +/- 6 weeks for us! 😎

Last time in an airport? Twas pre-Covid for me! 😎 Chris does an annual sister’s trip, to IL or FL.

Me, last time I experienced the G-awful Planes, Trains and… for personal reasons, I flew back to Chicago in 2007 for my Aunt’s services, almost 20 years ago, God Bless.

Started my current job teaching PMPs, 11 years ago and frequented airports every 2-3 weeks for 6 years, enough is enough! Now I present via Zoom! 😎

We have such a great home and local community, took us a lifetime to get here, so we don’t want to be away for more than a few weeks at a time, for the last 3 years, it’s  been the Oliver only!

That’s the beauty of the Oliver. We can visit the best of places just a few miles down the road! 😂

It's been a full year for us now. Last fall cancelled some trips because we were considering selling our house and needed to finish several things before putting it on the market, then my knee finally went caput. Operation in late February for replacement, recovery is going well but can only walk or light hike for about 3-4 miles without straining things and making it worse. The good news is I can bike much better and have racked up about 240+ miles in the last few months of light to moderate mountain biking. 

So with this situation no solo trips or the two of us traveling to the SW and other places. Glacier is not an option currently but might head to YNP later in the summer or early autumn if things keep improving. 

Old age is not what it's cracked up to be. Not for sissy's.

We’ve found that traveling business class makes air travel SO much more comfortable. Sure, you’re still stuck with TSA and crowds and such - but flying has been THE way to get from point A to B quickly and safely. 

Since the world’s recovery from COVID, air fares have been steadily climbing as people get back to traveling. Of course inflation and -somebody’s- non-war in Iran have driven fuel prices through the roof, but we’re all feeling that every day. 

Our first business class flight from Chicago to Heathrow in 2021 was about $1,200 round trip. Last year, was close to $3k. 

This year, we’re trying something new to us - crossing on the QM2 both ways. Price? A bit higher than flying business class. (Minimal cabin, drink package 😁) Then again, that includes 7 days worth of lodging, meals, entertainment, memories, and a major bucket list item. 

Trains in Europe and UK are fantastic. They make Amtrak look like a bad joke. Top speed in the states: 86mph. Europe: 200mph. And - unlike the one train per day to most Amtrak destinations (which is always late) - there are typically half a dozen trains in Europe. 

So - I know planes and trains and driving mirror-image cars on the wrong side of the road aren’t everyone’s idea of fun, but you can’t see the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, the pantheon, Trevi Fountain, the Acropolis, the beaches of Normandy, or the Haufbrau Haus that easily from your Oliver. 

I spent 60+ years in the USA. Now’s my time to see the world - literally. Sure, we have hot dogs and apple pie, but if you want a truly great beer - you hafta go to the UK. Wine? You can walk into almost any neighborhood store in Italy and buy a Chianti Classico for €6. 

Oh - and the French really are pretty decent cooks… 😂

Great pictures, they all bring back good memories.  We’re the opposite, we lived and worked in Europe 12 years (France, Belgium and Germany) and traveled extensively from Scandinavia to Greece and areas in between.  Our goal was to retire and see the USA, especially as many National Parks and Monuments as possible.  Mike
