New owners: how is the Quality Control of your rig? Grade it!
SeaDawg replied to John E Davies's topic in General Discussion
Back of beyond, I hope you don't drop out to the popcorn crowd. I understand the 10,000 work hours, 8 x 50 x 25.. Since most of us haven't read the book you referred to, it's easily misunderstood. Sherry -
Dog owners, any advice on a dog suddenly afraid of thunder?
SeaDawg replied to SeaDawg's topic in General Discussion
John, We used to give our cockapoo children's oral benadryl for his seizures. It did seem to help. Thanks for that idea. But, she is really little. I'll check with our vet when we get home. -
Dog owners, any advice on a dog suddenly afraid of thunder?
SeaDawg replied to SeaDawg's topic in General Discussion
Thanks, folks, I'll give the thunder shirt a try. I've seen the display in our vets office, but Liv used to be intrepid. She still doesn't know she's only nine pounds. She is only consoled by a tight grip, and closeness. Shallowgal, l will check out the herbal. Summer thunderstorm season is a regular thing in Florida, but she goes into one of her safe places, or jumps in a lap, and she's good. Here, it's way different, suddenly. She's been camping since she was a tiny pup of four months. The Oliver is her second home, as it is ours.I'm struggling to figure out the sudden change. Thanks again. Sherry -
Our little dog Livvy has suddenly become terrified of thunder. She's almost four, and no fear of anything until recently. She has started to shake with every tiny rumble in the distance, and pant even being held tightly on my chest. Yesterday, we were at a neighborhood party down the mountain for a cookout, and came home to find her burrowed under the bedding and pillows. Tonight, we were home, so she is more consoled when the evening storm started. She's much worse here in the camper than at home. I've read about thunder shirts. Has anyone actually tried one with success? Any other ideas or advice? Thanks in advance from Livvy, who normally loves camping... Sherry

Sorry to hear about your problems. Which fridge do you have? We had various issues with our dometic early on, and all of them were corrected by Camping world under warranty, no charge, after we did the basic troubleshooting to rule out any operator errors. Is your fridge running at all, or just not cooling properly? Any number of us would be happy to help, if we can. Sherry

I'm not sure what happened. I reset it. If it flips again, perhaps it's the duplicate display name on two accounts? Thanks for your patience... Sherry -

No worries. Your username has to remain kenpen, but the display name is changed. Welcome to the forum. Sherry -
Wow, but a new bumper sticker is truly unnecessary. Our forum is our own, and not moderated by the factory, first of all. Then.. Any forum is an accumulation of participants' experience and/ or opinion. A number of people here have given their experience and opinions. Take it for wiw. Do your own research. All of us did.... We all hope you enjoy your new trailer. Not trying to be snippy. Just trying to figure out what information you want.... All we have to offer is what has worked for us... Thanks, and good luck, Just an fyi, in the sticky world, a couple dealers tried to convince us in 2007 that we could tow a midsize fifth wheel with my little Silverado 1500. We knew then and now that it would have been at the least a problem At worst, a disaster. Here, at the very least, you'll get real world experience from owners. I have a legacy 1, so I can't help, except to say, read and learn. Truth is, most of us are a bit on the senior side of the line, and will steer you to a more conservative solution... Happy travels, Sherry

That's a really nice offer, and an area of Tennessee where we haven't spent much time. I'd like to suggest that you break apart your email with a few spaces and replace @ with at, so the bots don't pick it up for spam mail. By the time I saw your post, I saw you were offline, so I edited your email removing the @. Hope I'm not offending you. You're very kind to offer space to Oliver travelers. Sherry

Need help on cleaning exterior window 'band' &
SeaDawg replied to Steve-Gwenne's topic in Mechanical & Technical Tips
There's a product at the dollar stores called "awesome". In a clear spray bottle, and quart refills. It's a yellow color, in the cleaning section at both dollar tree and dollar general. Walmart has a similar product, but I don't remember the name, and I sent it home with my sister yesterday as it was so successful at cleaning the mildew off her door... Very good at removing mildew. Also removes the wax layers you've built up, so use a towel beneath to keep it from running down the side.... A little softscrub with lemon or bleach on an old toothbrush can also work. Same caveat. Keep it off the gelcoat.. and your wax. Rinse well when done. Unlike John, we're in Florida and North Carolina, and no strangers to mildew..... lol ? Sherry -
Some kind of bunk option, I'd agree. I think a bigger trailer needs a bigger fridge, with a separate freezer . Around 7 cubic feet. Off the floor, with a cabinet underneath for trash and whisk broom, etc. Someday, I'd really love to have an oven. We always have one in the delivery rvs, even the small 24 footers. Since we mostly camp in cool and cold weather, the heat is welcome . I don't use a microwave. I keep looking for a campervan oven option... not likely to find something to fit our little 2008. But, I can dream. Or get a portable camp unit. Sherry

Exterior cleaning - Wax recommendations
SeaDawg replied to BackofBeyond's topic in General Discussion
For over ten years, we've used 3 m ultra marine paste wax. We use the same wax on our boats. Does well in the Florida sun. It's expensive , and a pita to use, twice a year. But it works Sherry -
Yes, I see that, Mainiac. That would certainly be a new feature. Sherry

On our older 2008 trailer, the propane gauge just shows opn. Not connected.
I'm wondering if the new trailers have a gauge installed like the motorhomes we deliver. Not very accurate, but better than nothing... Sherry

I hope that you can eventually reopen the lines of communication with your children. It may be a long and problematic road, but I hope you can find a path. I'm a mom. My worst camping days are when i can't get even a text to and from my daughter. I feel hollow, without knowing she is ok.

Sakthorp, most all of the RV fridges have the option for different colors of face panels. I suspect norcold still does this, and I doubt Oliver is changing up the panels from the black to a wood look.... Sherry

Quick and easy is true of the power awning. Just not as stable, imo. I'm thinking about a day we arrived at a shadeless spot in Durango. Gusting winds every few minutes... had to abandon the beers and snacks every five minutes or so to reel in the power awning. On our delivery motorhome, that's a big sail. It was quick. If we'd been in the Oliver, it would have been slightly longer. But not much, as we leave the handle engaged in iffy conditions for quick retraction, and, it's a much smaller awning. I've seen a number of destroyed awnings, power and manual, where owners left the awning out unattended in wind conditions. It's all just a matter of common sense. And, timing. Sherry

Ten and a half years with hull #12. Still very happy with our camper. It's still looking pretty fine, too. Sherry

Agree with kounteykamper. We've had power awnings on all the motorhomes we deliver. Not as easy to adjust. Mandatory to pull it in with any breezy or gusty conditions. Given the choice, I'd stay with a manual awning. Easy to deploy. Still problematic in even moderate wind, but less so than the power awnings we've used. Sherry

I'd have to agree with John. Protect the tires both ways. We do. Even so, they only have a five year life. At best. Sherry

And, lastly, the convection microwave. We had one. Never, ever used the convection feature. I have one in my home kitchen, too. Never used it at home, either . But, I rarely use a microwave at home, and never camping. I like my big cabinet in place of the microwave on our 2008.
Everyone has different styles. If you plan to camp a lot with fill hookups ( we don't), you might like the convection. If you enjoy campfire cooking, not so much... My microwave died, I think, from lack of use, as we almost never have electricity. So, keep that in mind in weighing my advice. .. Sherry

As far as the awning, Oliver used to use the horizon, which was unavailable for awhile. Dometic owns that brand now, too. I also would not be disappointed with that change. But the current carefree is a great awning, too. I suspect they may have gone with the dometic awning for the power upgrade, plus the easier consistent availability. Just my opinion. Sherry
-
I wouldn't be disappointed in getting a norcold. We've had both brands in our own 2008, and in rental deliveries, and I prefer the norcold. Better information on the panel for error codes, and I like the touch panel vs buttons on dometic. That said, dometic owns both brands. And we no longer own a three way. We're strictly 12v danfoss/secop compressor fridge now. Sherry

Truma tankless water heater option - yes or no?
SeaDawg replied to John E Davies's topic in General Discussion
Overland, you're right in the endless shower idea. I guess I'm guaging on our van camping, where we always use the campground shower facilities. In that scenario, it doesn't even matter if you have a water heater, at all ... Dishes are easy with a kettle. The extra 5 or 6 gallons are only accessible if you drain the Atwood into a bucket, is my understanding. To me, it was an extra 40 pounds to drag around for no real reason... The endless shower isn't part of our camping, but I can see the luxury... The endless rv park shower lux makes sense for RV park camping with the truma, I guess. Our Girard runs only on gas, so the free electric heating of water is lost in full hookup situations... Sherry
