Towing Report: 2022 Subaru Limited + 2022 Elite I
rideandfly replied to DunnYet's topic in Towing an Oliver
Here's a copy of the operator's manual for our 2022 Tundra, I highlighted the model code for our Tundra. When I see occupants, feel like I should add driver's weight like the passenger's weights. With 1400 pound load capacity (occupants + luggage), subtract 480 pound LE2 tongue weight, in our case 325 pounds for two passengers leaving 595 pounds for additional gear. Using the CAT scale will not give occupants + luggage weight, but here's my loaded ready to camp CAT scale result with 75 pounds of additional gear to place in the back seat area. -
Can my Highlander 2020 XLE tow a Legacy Elite I ?
rideandfly replied to bbrault's topic in Towing an Oliver
Our LE2 weighs in ready to camp at 4940 pounds with empty black, grey, & fresh water tanks. This weight includes full 6 gallon hot water heater. The reason our LE2 is so light we keep Ollie's spare tire in the truck bed, replaced lead acid batteries with one 100AH (35lb) lithium battery, and replaced LP 20lb tanks with smaller tanks. Our Ollie did not come with factory installed solar. Also load more gear in the TV to keep Ollie's weight low. Some trips we take a gen-set, solar panel, and golf clubs in the TV, normally not all on the same trip. Reason I'm saying this is last year I experimented towing our Ollie with a smaller pickup that was rated to tow more than your Highlander. The test TV V6 normally aspirated engine had slightly more HP & torque than the Highlander. Emergency braking was fine with properly adjusted trailer brake controller (real experience), but because of engine performance we had to get in the slow lane with the tractor trailers going up grades. There had to be more accumulated stress on the engine due to higher RPMs constantly going up grades. The fuel economy was lower than our 1/2 ton 2022 Tundra with 3.5L twin turbo engine towing the same trailer. Our Tundra handles this trailer easily overall compared to the smaller pickup, too. Several folks here use larger trucks towing their LE2s, too. We are happy with the Tundra as a Ollie TV, but I still keep a close eye on rig weights with CAT scales. We like pickup trucks, but if we were going to buy an SUV for towing Ollie, it would be the 2023 Sequoia. -
Gas prices in the NC Blue Ridge Mountains was around $3.25 last week. We enjoy seeing leaves change at different elevations on the BRP. Going to get some work done at home until the leaves start changing on the BRP, and we will be exploring again.

Yep, that's interesting about running full tank of regular when oil is changed. Never ran E85 in our 2016 Tundra and our 2022 Tundra is not flex fuel, it uses regular 87 and has 10,000 mile oil/filter change intervals except for 5,000 miles when towing. Finally achieved my 17MPG goal towing on hills and flat-lands yesterday four lanes and interstate, it's happy at 2200RPM towing Ollie around 61MPH in 7th gear with cruise on the interstate. Just washed Ollie, getting ready to put in storage until next adventure! 🙂

About using E85, our last 2016 Toyota Tundra had a 5.7L flex fuel engine. Never used E85 because the oil change intervals could be cut in 1/2 from 5,000 miles to 2,500 miles, I do the maintenance on our vehicles when I run out of free oil changes with new vehicles, did not want the extra work. Here's additional information at about E85: https://tundraheadquarters.com/five-things-you-may-not-know-about-flex-fuel-engines/

Have not seen regular gas that low yet! 👍Best I've found is $3.13 for Regular 87 in NC.

Welcome and Congratulations on your new Ollie and retirement! There are many folks here with vast experience camping in Ollies! We love camping in our Ollie! Bill and Debbie

Nice shot! Always nice to meet other Ollie owners while camping and on the road, maybe next time! Don't think we're going back to Doughton Park this year, but plan to next spring! It's only a 1/4 tank of gas (up the mountain) from home! Air Bellows Gap on the way home:

Thanks! Yes, still in NC, but not far from music center in Va on the BRP. That’s what we like about camping on the BRP, if you don’t go hiking, a drive on the BRP always works. There’s a a detour around a bridge on the BRP at Rt 18. We drove through Elkins on Rt 21 to the BRP to Doughton Park. After crossing into Va on the BRP.

Trip to Doughton Park Campground NC on the Blue Ridge Parkway. First camping trip to Doughton Park. Cost is $10 per night with the geezer card. All of the campground roads are paved. There’s no water or electricity at the campsites and their restrooms don’t have showers. They have a uphill dump station that makes dumping Ollie easy. When filling the fresh water tank could only fill to 70% due to grade at fill area. They have plenty of hiking trails. The picnic area was a beautiful place, especially for sunsets. We will be visiting again.

Brake drum temps mystery
rideandfly replied to Steph and Dud B's topic in Mechanical & Technical Tips
In the 7 pin plug there is only one brake power pin making one power source to wiring for brakes. At first I thought it was bearings, but after the symptoms you're seeing and hearing, there may issues with drum brakes or magnets with both wheels on one side. It's possible to have a intermittent wiring problem (short) giving power to the brakes on one side from another power source. Please let us know what the local shop finds. -
Have not camped in this area yet, but will camp at Buddy Bear, Thanks for the info!

Agree, they have beautiful falls and places to hike & golf:

We stayed at Cumberland Mountain State Park TN several times not too far from I40 between Nashville and Knoxville. We like camping in area 5. It's located in the Plateau area at Crossville. Electricity & water at the campsites with a dump station as you leave. The restrooms were clean, too. https://tnstateparks.com/parks/cumberland-mountain

Live streaming through the Furrion receiver.
rideandfly replied to Going's topic in Mechanical & Technical Tips
We explore surrounding areas during the day when camping and watch TV before going to bed. I tried connecting Roku to the Furrion unit's HDMI connection on the front of the unit and it would not work. I will check the operators manual, but believe Furrion's HDMI may be an output. The HDMI on the back of the Jensen TV is an input receiving signal from the Furrion unit how our LE2 #75 was set up from Oliver. Have not tried this but the HDMI input on the back of the Jensen TV should work with a device like Roku with correct TV setting, should be HDMI. -
Brake drum temps mystery
rideandfly replied to Steph and Dud B's topic in Mechanical & Technical Tips
This may have already been mentioned, did you see higher temps on one side before bearing service? -
Our Honda EU2000i gen-set that's 1600W continuous and 2000W peak runs our Dometic 13.5K AC fine with the Microair EZ start installed. Only run one major appliance at a time with the gen-set, AC or Microwave or hot water heater. When charging the Battleborn lithium battery when it's between 70% & 80%, let the single 100AH battery charge close to 100% for around 60 minutes before running a major appliance. Right now we only have one 100W Renogy solar suitcase panel, but will probably increase to two 100W solar suitcases and we don't have factory solar or inverter. It takes a while for the single 100W panel to take the battery to 100% depending on solar charge conditions, that's why I want to increase to two solar panels.

Brake drum temps mystery
rideandfly replied to Steph and Dud B's topic in Mechanical & Technical Tips
First thing I would do is jack the wheels off the ground and see if they spin freely to see if brakes are dragging like JD said. If bearing (spindle) nuts are too tight, it could cause drag and heat, too. -
When I installed the Furrion solar port, my only reservation it was 10 amps. I like how it mounts and resist weather, but replacing the guts like John said with higher amperage components should work. Planning to buy another 100W Renogy suitcase panel and connect both 100W panels together with Renogy branch Y connectors for a parallel connection between both solar panels running - & + cables to the 20A Renogy Voyager controller. Believe the maximum current I should see will be 14 or 15 amps in very good solar charging conditions. The 20A Renogy solar controller that is normally mounted on the back of the solar panel was removed and mounted in Ollie's battery compartment with the lithium battery. Renogy indicated in their Solar Controller information (if I remember correctly) this is more efficient than leaving the Solar Controller on the suitcase solar panel. Contacted Renogy and they said this plan would work fine. Do you mean connect panels in series when you say daisy chain? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08T1Q8PF7/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A05654602L3XUQ70M87BV&psc=1

John, Just found this video showing a few ways to make this modification. At the end of the video he shows the Anderson/Powerwerx modification you discussed. Will post the modification when done! Thanks,

Our Ollie does not have factory installed solar. Installed an exterior Furrion Solar port on Ollie for use with our 100W Renogy Solar Suitcase. This system works fine with a single 100AH BattleBorn lithium battery. Have seen charge rates up to 7 amps with the 100W Solar Suitcase. Also using a 20Amp Renogy waterproof solar charger mounted in the battery compartment using 10/2 charge cables with MC4 connectors. Would like to start using a Renogy 200W Solar Suitcase with this system, but the problem is the Furrion Port is only rated for 10 amps. Has anyone here modified their Furrion solar port increasing amperage to 20amps or any ideas on modifying this port to be able to handle 20 amps? During installation of the Furrion Solar Port used a 2" hole saw for installation, so I will keep this solar port housing installed. Thanks, Bill 2015 LE2 https://furrion.com/products/solar-port-inlet-black?view=base&variant=32719516270688 https://www.amazon.com/iGreely-Industrial-Circular-Connector-Suitcase/dp/B07RXHF3GF/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1LTZ0CV42B9E7&keywords=solar+port+connector&qid=1662133552&sprefix=solar+port+connector%2Caps%2C178&sr=8-5

Trying out a new Xantrex portable solar panel
rideandfly replied to Cameron's topic in General Discussion
Thanks Steve -
We just returned from camping at Mt. Pisgah NC on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Another Ollie was there, too. Met Lee, owner of #82 LE2, very fine person. We had some great conversations, too! We trailered our motorcycle with the Tacoma and had some fine two-up BRP rides. Also had breakfast one morning at the Mt. Pisgah restaurant. 👍 Already planning another trip to the BRP at one of the lower elevation campgrounds for next month! Great Trip!!!!! 🙂

Tire pressure confusion - Legacy Elite 2 POLL
rideandfly replied to John E Davies's topic in Towing an Oliver
Not yet. I sent my request to cooperinfo@coopertire.com on 8/18/22. Oliver should include this information in their Ollie operators manual. Great information, Thanks!
