Kitchen drawers. - keeping closed

Recommended Posts

There was discussion on here awhile ago about drawers opening while underway. At that time the factory was also using real short screws to attach the drawer glides. Under certain circumstances the drawers would end up in the aisle, and usually something would break. A search of the forum should show several methods of preventing. We got our supplies from a fabric outlet that carries material for boat upholstery. We used about 1/8" shock cord. Underway it just pops on. When stopped they coil up real small and fit in top right drawer. In the 5500/6000 miles since installed we have had no further incidents where we have had to repair a drawer...

We have had no problem with Hull #305. Don’t overload the drawers.

We had no problem either...until we did. We were on pavement coming home from the factory after a service visit. Not sure why it failed then since the road was smooth although it was curvy. Anyway, as you can see the drawer was not overloaded. Oliver repaired the drawer. We have since installed the footman loops like John Davies has. I don’t want to worry about what I put in my drawers all the time.

It seems as if the problem of inadvertent openings and too short screw failures started around the time of the switch from the side slides to the bottom slides.

Our old hull #050 has the side slides and I can’t imagine the lateral forces it would take to make them open in a right hand turn.

Our rear nightstand drawer has come open (understandably) during a hard braking action, but that was solved with a turn latch like the ones on all the other doors.

Those bottom slides probably are the best there is in a static situation (like your kitchen at home), but perhaps not so much in a dynamic setting.

Mike and Krunch recently posted his fix for the drawer problem, but I'm unable to find it. What I like about their system is it uses suction cups and spring-loaded curtain rods and does not require drilling into the fiberglass.

Actually it is a piece of 1/2” pvc pipe with chair leg cups on each end and 2 small Harbor Freight suction cups for each set of drawers. When parked, we use the setup inside or out for hanging wet things. And after seeing a recent mod for a shower curtain, I believe it will work for that as well. I also have a similar setup for an outside shower curtain. Got to love pvc.

Mike & Krunch -

Ya got some pics of the outdoor shower setup to post under a new thread? I've got an external shower tent that I use with a solar shower and have been thinking about ways to do a shower enclosure on the side of the Oliver.

  • 7 months later...

Hello all,

I just saw a possible solution for securing the drawers.  The solution is shown on a Youtube video at about the 7:45 mark. One could choose a different material to coordinate with the interior finish of the Oliver.  Perhaps the folks at Oliver would consider such a modification utilizing compatible material ....
