4/24/17 - An Oliver in the mist...

Yesterday we arrived in Yosemite just before dark, then quickly set up the basics because this week we are Boondocking below Half Dome. After that we went over to our friends site across the meadow to see them before bed time. When boondocking we try to not use much water and between yesterday and today, we used up a whopping 5%, which leaves us at 75% today...

75%? But... That doesn't add up?

We had filled up with water before leaving Sacramento, but between there and here in Yosemite, the roads are so steep, and winding and rough that 20% had bounced out by the time we got here. We are staying in Upper Pines Campground with 3 other couples and this is the first year that we haven't been able to get our camping spots next to each other like so many times past. This is our yearly Spring gathering here together and this time there's an Oliver in the list :)

It was a rainy day today and we finished setting up everything and working around camp. Also more friends came in today and one had never been here before :)

2017 has been one of the greatest flood years ever here in California and just last week the campgrounds were still flooded. So the Falls this year are huge... "How huge?" you ask, well those pics will come soon :) We counted 40 different waterfalls here in Yosemite last night as we drove in. And that was just from the Highway 140 enterance. We even have a small one living right out our back window.

Here's a few pics from dinner and around the fire tonight

Tonight we broke out our new Cobb Grill for the first time and barbequed Tri-tip along with some broccoli. And I switched out one of our propane hoses and hooked our propane fireplace up to the rear port on Lil and had some great fun, good times, and great food.

Our first night using the Cobb Grill was a very satisfying success :)

So everyone mist... Play on words :) Raspy - John & Liye are here with us in Yosemite in their Ollie #92 and you can see their Ollie in the background of pic#2. I noticed that nobody wrote anything and it says blog, but participate anytime because I'm not up on the lingo if that's why it's still blank :)

We've had to use the generator the past couple days to top off the batteries at the end of the day. We started out at 12.3 vdc this morning and we're only up to 12.4 - 5 by. 6pm. It was clowdy and raining off and on here in Yosemite Valley, so, out came the generator again.

Then tonight we are using the Cobb Grill again, we really love this little Grill and have now used it to make dinner every night.

And tonight is pizza night :)

I did see the other Ollie in the photo. Meant to comment, but got sidetracked. BTW- park service says all of the non-reservation campgrounds in Yosemite are closed until sometime in July due to heavy snow. Had to make reservations at a campground in June at a nearby state park to see Yosemite this year, as you recommended.

Yea, there's a ton of snow up there this year. June will be a good time and they should have everything cleaned up after the winter we had :)

If you come in during the week and walk into the office they can find open spots for you in the valley also usually. That's what Raspy has done all week and he's in a killer spot right now. With the senior pass its $13.00 a night. In Upper Pines CG from 206 and up are prime spots. Basically, the higher the number the better the spots on that section. We had a great camp fire at his camp last night :)

Good Times :)

Pizza looks awesome. Wish we were there, too!

Which battery configuration did you choose? I see you are using the Honda 2000. We carry a 1000 as a backup to solar, but not a huge difference in weight or fuel consumption between the two. I can lift and carry either with one hand. We've thought about upgrading, but the 1000 has done well for nine years, so we've stuck with the original choice.

Sherry

PS one of these days, don't be surprised if another Oliver joins you for amazing pizza... Your photos are just too tempting. Lol.

Hope to meet you both one of these days... Til then, happy travels.

Hi Sherry :)

We have the 4 T105's and have used the 2000i consistently since 2003. She's getting old and has many thousands of hours on her, but has paid for herself many times over. We even use her when the power's out at home to run everything :) She works perfect with Lil also. Next will be a spare gas tank or 2 for the summer air conditioning.

We will definitely have to get together in the future :)

We had a great time in Yosemite and thank you Reed for helping us get set up! Excellent tour and good times around the campfire. I would never have guessed that we could just show up and get a prime camping site! Thanks again.

Yosemite was memorable with the big waterfalls raging and small ones trickling down everywhere. Mirror Lake actually a lake again.

Liye had never been and it's been a long time for me.

See you guys in Bandon,

After dumping the gray tank at an RV park with the trailer leveled on full hook ups, I noticed that we were still holding 25% on the tank level. We had some good weather, so I went out and found that when we are level, the hose has to go up before it exits at the back of the bumper.

IMG_20170430_105421.thumb.jpg.c873629471ebb79379c1c6de27164512.jpg

When looking at the diamond plate, you can see that it is... Or was higher on the left side

IMG_20170430_105829-1.thumb.jpg.8de750b15ef5040054cff3a0a2fa1f54.jpg

So I pulled the bumper, got out the wrenches and grinder and made a little improvement.

After pulling the bumper I took my 18" Crescent Wrench with a pair of Channel Locks underneath and then bent the bottom plate down to where the hose is almost level.

IMG_20170501_195705.thumb.jpg.8cf91a98e292e3a113521f7216ca2a69.jpg

Then out came the grinder after rounding out the lip to make the bumper fit back on.

I have some more work to do, but now when emptied with the trailer level, I've gone from 25% down to 6% still remaining on the tank level indicator. I usually raise the front end when dumping before driving, except when the stations are already set at an angle for speed dumping. The other thing that we have found, is that with the shower drain back flow valve closed, this also closes off the bathroom vent. We are still experimenting, but it seems so far to really make a difference in the speed at which the tanks dump. It is a lot faster with the vent valve open, especially with the gray water.

Screenshot_2017-04-21-12-50-43.thumb.png.d992ca24078246e5536bd959395255ef.png

Then also after seeing how Randy has his bumper set up, I took our Camco Sewer Slinky and separated it into thirds. Then I stack them halved again in the bottom of the hose box with the shorter section on the left, then the mid, and the tallest section on the right. Then I have the 2 10' sections of Valterra hose in back as extra. The small third doesn't get used as much and I really like it even better now, having them all separated and fitting in the bumper with everything else because it really opened up a hole in my tool closet. Enough so, that now I can fit my 8 gallon roll away water tank inside. For the drain hose I first have a 10' Rhinoflex extension, then a clear 6" section, which really does make it easy to see when the tanks are totally clean, then the standard 15' Rhinoflex sewer hose for a total of 25' that I leave hooked up all the time. I love the Rhinoflex because it is so easy to set the length with its accordion style of hose. Everything fits inside the bumper, all 45' of hose, the slinky, the extra caps and sewer connections, and a washdown wand for the toilet that we use every now and again. So far, the black tank rinse has worked ok. But we have also gone ahead and washed it out by hand at a couple spots that were set up with the water on the curb side. We just ran the hose thru the door and washed it totally clean :)

Out of 35 trailers this weekend at the 14th Annual Fiberglass RV Rally in King City, California, we were the only Oliver and most everyone came over and took the tour :)

 • 2 weeks later...

I'm really happy with our water and waste set up now. I took out the Valterra hoses that came with "Goldilocks ", (Her new name now). Then modified the waste hose opening and put in a 10' Rhinoflex extension as the main with the 6" clear piece and Valterra end on it for the usual short runs. Then I have the 15' Rhinoflex set up in the box for an add on when needed with room to spare.

So now...

It's just right... :)

16 weeks and 4 days after leaving home to pick up Goldilocks from Hohenwald, TN, we are officially home :) We arrived this afternoon and are Boondocking in our woods, on our property. We haven't been to the house yet and that will come soon enough. Being a holiday weekend, and because the house is still winterized, we are going to continue living here in our trailer until we get the work done and have the house opened up again. We left early in the morning on February 6th and arrived to stay, today, May 26th. Our longest trip to date :)

So we went thru our gate and picked a nice spot up on the hill. We have a spring about 50' away and up hill for water, and for the first time, it took a 7 block high set up to level out Goldilocks. I used up all 3 sets and had to do a double set to get high enough. Set once, roll up, pull the blocks from behind, set them up to 7 high and then roll on up to the top. I guess we will be buying one more set of the blocks ;)

We are officially at home, boondocking in the 100 acre wood, with Goldilocks for the first time.

Congrats, that was a long shakeout trip. That's quite the hillside, hopefully washout isn't too much of a concern. Will you leave it there, as your spot in the woods or take it to the house afterwards?

No problem with washout, we're actually parked on an old dirt road that isn't used anymore. We will be taking it down to the house eventually but not right away. We have hook ups at the house, but we really don't need them. I will use a tote for now for the black. I need to rent a tractor for a couple days to fill the road to the house up with some new gravel and to make a turn around up here so that we can get a few trailers in here into a circle like in the old Western movies. This is the woods and we do have lots of bears, mountain lions, bobcats, Bigfoots, etc :)

Well, our friend Mark and his 27' Bigfoot anyway :) The Creek is just a short distance away also, so we have fishing and gold panning until we get the swimming hole rebuilt. The floods took all of the top soil off of my driveway to the house and it filled in the swimming hole in the creek, so we have some work to do here and only 5 weeks before we leave for the Bandon, Oregon Rally. So... we may have to pass on the swimming hole repair this year because we will be gone for another couple months or so after Bandon. We really like the Rally circuit, so we've got a couple more booked starting at the end of September. Karen is famous with the Casita owners, because she is the artist that draws all of the Casita Coloring Book pages for the art classes that everyone takes at the Rally's. She will be drawing Ollie's soon I hope :) it's not like I've said anything though ;) hehe

Day 4 of boondocking in our trees on the old road. Even with all of the trees around and overhead, Goldilocks is charged up to 12.6vdc before sundown. We haven't needed to run the generator even though we've been using the inverter, microwave, etc. You can see our tank fill hose hanging off the back end, still connected. We added a couple loads of water today and now we have the Cobb out and Karen is bbq'ing Tri-tip that we picked up from the Lockford Meat Company. The place is famous out here and people travel far and wide to buy from them. It was my first time and the place is always packed with customers :)
