At the rally earlier this month there were a few owners that had awning damage from the strong storms that blew through. One directly across from us lost their entire awning and asked if I could haul it to the dumpster area for them since I had a truck. I did so, but before I did I cannibalized any undamaged parts that I could carry with the intent of offering them here for any owner that might need any of them. The awning was a Carefree awning. I salvaged the fabric, support arms, and several other pieces of hardware. If any of you are in need of any parts that I may have, just let me know.

Well, the plunger on mine attracts a magnet so it must not be pot metal. The break in your plunger looks like it is a cast material. Will that broken off piece stick to a magnet?

Hey George and Joanie, welcome to the group. Airstream makes a good looking trailer but the Oliver is something quite different! Don, this is a great place to get your questions answered. We picked ours up 2 years ago and it is our first travel trailer. We had lots of questions too. After about 30K miles since May 2016 and mentoring and help from fellow owners I think we’ve got it figured out! Mike

After looking at that photo of the failure and looking at my latch plunger I believe that it is made out of “pot metal”. And instead of having 0.25 in^2 of cross sectional area to shear there is only about 0.125 in^2 of cross sectional area to shear. I will be looking for a latch made of steel to replace mine.

Dropped a metal screw in an aircraft fuel tank one time, that tool was very handy retrieving the screw, too!

I have not had that problem. I would like to see a clear picture of that failure. When I push my battery tray in I pull the latch up rather than push it in hard and let the latch snap up and then down. When my battery tray is all the way in and latched there is about 1/8 inch slop in the fit. I stick a folded up piece of cardboard (until I find something more expensive) in there to prevent any movement when on the road. That much weight moving back and forth is bound to damage something.

Just to sort of put a period at the end of this "zerk" sentence - I finally got around to taking a look at the original Zerk that I replaced. There was no sign of any foreign material inside it, but, when I applied pressure to the inlet, the little ball bearing seal simply would not release. So, I got an appropriate sized nail punch, applied pressure and still no give - a light tap with a small hammer was what it took to get any movement. However, now it appears that this zerk is back to working as "normal". I'm not sure what got it stuck but it works now. Bill
