  1. What is Galvanic Reaction? - When two dissimilar metals are in contact and exposed to an electrolyte substance it causes one of the metals to lose ions and slowly consumes that metal. - It works much like a battery. One of the metals will become and act like an Anode(Negative) and the other a Cathode(Positive). This process will slowly consume the Anode and actually strengthen the Cathode. - Galvanic reaction occurs when an electrolyte combines with water. Depending on which electrolyte is present, it will completely(strong) or partially (weak) ionize with the water to form a strong or weak electrolyte substance. What is an electrolyte substance? Strong Acids Examples: Hydrochloric Acid, Sulfuric Acid, and other Acids Strong Bases Examples: Sodium Hydroxide, Calcium Hydroxide, and other Hydroxides. Salts Sodium Chloride Winter Road Treatment: - Different cities utilize a handful of different chemicals to treat roadways for ice. Most of these are from a form of chloride which does become an electrolyte once dissolved with water. TIP: It is always a good idea to clean these chemicals from any vehicle and/or camper when possible. What type of impact does this play on Aluminum? - When oxygen is present (in water), aluminum naturally reacts to form aluminum oxide and this is the key to its ability to resist corrosion. Unless exposed to a substance or condition in which destroys the protective layer, aluminum will remain resistant to corrosion. - When aluminum contacts another metal(steel for example), it sets in place the possibility of a galvanic reaction if an electrolyte substance comes in contact with the metals. What does Oliver do to prevent this natural process? A protective layer, cavity spray, is placed between the two metals. Zinc anodes are attached to the aluminum frame The Zinc becomes the anode part of the equation and if the galvanic reaction process takes place, it will consume the Zinc anode instead of the aluminum frame. How often should I check my Anodes? - Depending on where you live or where you travel you may or may not even have a galvanic reaction but it is still a good idea to inspect your anodes at least once a year and more if you start to notice that the anode is deteriorating.

  3. Our shades are custom made in Canada and are a specialty item made only for Oliver. The company is Auto-Motion Shade Inc. 400 Bentley Street, Markham, Ontario. The Customer Service Representative is Alex Colavecchia. You can reach him at 905-470-6198 or alexc@automotionshade.com. But the guy you really need to talk to is Vick. He is the one that actually assembles all of Oliver's shades. His cell phone is 416-989-1075. He will send you the cord and an instruction sheet for free. All that having been said, the sheet is not very clear and after disassembling the shade it's like doing Chinese arithmetic trying to see where all the strings go. I never did get ours fixed. Thanks a lot for reminding me. I think I'll go eat a bug.

  6. I also have a Toyota Tundra and Elite II but if we lower the tailgate we have to put a towel on the hitch because it does touch.

  7. Issue: A/C Fan runs when mode set to furnace Models Impacted: Dometic Penguin II equipped Information: The on-board thermostat communicates with the Dometic Penguin II A/C unit and the A/C unit then communicates with the Furnace. When the mode is set to Furnace the A/C fan should not run if set to AUTO. If the fan speed is set to LOW or HIGH, this will cause the A/C unit fan to run with the Furnace as a means to distribute the inside air flow. If you are experiencing this issue, please ensure that the fan speed on the A/C is set to AUTO. Resolution: Normal Operation *If the A/C fan runs when set to Auto and mode is set to Furnace, then another issue exists and the Dometic A/C unit should be inspected by a Dometic certified technician.

  8. I agree black frames might be a good contrast look. As for the shade color, on the sunniest day an afternoon nap is easily accomplished with the off white currently installed, when you close all the night shades it is DARK in the trailer. Well, except for the MaxxAir, need a little draw shade for that too.

  9. Canoe12, Once I receive the new cords and instructions, will see how easy it is to disassemble/reassemble shade and frame. May change color of all Ollie window frames with plastic primer and white paint. Front jack motor covers painted with plastic primer and white plastic paint in the following thread. http://olivertraveltrailers.com/topic/ollie-front-jack-covers-painted-white/ Back to polishing the Ollie!

  10. Hey Fred... NJ Here too. We are in the Caldwells. There are several Ollie's planning on hitting the NH Spring Fling in May. It's a fiberglass RV event. If you come to that you can see inside as well as out. No Drooling! :-) If you want a tour send me a PM. I store the trailer about an hour away and will be picking it up for the May trip. Good Luck and hope an Oliver is in your near future. Scotty Flying Sea Turtle - Hull #145

  11. This info was available because I did the research and discovered it. I don't own an owner's manual but I'd bet a month's salary that it's not there and if you were to call Oliver they could only tell you the name of the company. As far as finding it 4-8 years from now, I'd write it down. I keep information like this in my phone. And it's backed up, multiple times. The only answer for the question of color seems to be the fact that they choose not to produce it in pure white. They used to, the shade frames in our first Outlaw Oliver were white but sometime during Oliver's travel trailer building hiatus (2009-2013) the company switched to only Black and Almond.

  12. Since the issue of frame flexing, leveling with jacks, et al. has come up in multiple threads, I spoke with Jason yesterday as to just what info was being given out at the factory during plant tours, phone inquiries, etc. In the old days (circa 2008) we were told that the purpose of the jacks was to raise, lower, level and stabilize the trailers. When we took ownership of our 2014 model nothing was said to the contrary. In full disclosure, probably since this was our second Oliver, we weren't told really much of anything. We have always used the rear jacks to lift and level both of our Oliver's and we have never experienced any cracking of the gel-coat. I would expect that flexing of the frame is "normal." That meaning, if you lift one side of the trailer significantly greater than the other you are naturally going to put a certain amount of twisting force on the frame. Is this OK? Probably for short periods of time. I would not recommend leaving it that way over the winter. I learned from Jason that the concern is about flexing the jack attachment points on the frame and the factory position is that the jacks should only be used to stabilize the trailer. It is their opinion that, with the exception of changing a tire, they should not be used to completely lift the weight of the trailer. All three jacks are made by the same manufacturer with the rear two made especially for Oliver. They all have the same rating. Steve's opinion is that the jacks are fully capable of lifting the full weight of the trailer. If this were not true the front jack should never be use for lifting (it does, however, have a completely different mounting system from the rear jacks.) As I see it, the problem is not with the jacks but with the way they are mounted to the frame. At full extension, there could be a lot of leverage and torque on the attachment point. For this reason we have always put 11 inch blocks under the rear jacks and rarely extend them past about 4 inches. Individual owners will have to make up their own minds as to their leveling needs. As for the gel-coat cracks in a Casita, their hulls average about 3/16" thick. There are areas of the Oliver hull that are over 2 inches thick! Our hulls are much more substantial than any of the others.

  13. Any exterior opening should have either a screen installed or a temporary (removable and highly visible) cover, like on an airplane. Don't forget the septic vent on top of the roof. If that gets plugged up by wasps the blank tank will get smelly. You could go overboard and stick plugs in the water system belly drains, but I think that would be just something a truly anal person like me might do. I think it all depends on how bad the pest problem, mud daubers especially, is in your area. https://www.your-rv-lifestyle.com/rv-pests.html John Davies Spokane WA
