Honda 2000 won't run a/c with easy start. (split from another thread)

Will a 2,000 watt Honda EU 2000i generator reliably start and run the unit with or without EZ Start?

Hull #226:  Micro Air EZ Start installed on standard Dometic A/C unit/Honda EU 2000i GENSET:  NO CAN RUN A/C, just FYI.  Maybe a EU 2200i could pull it off, but we don't have access to one (YET).

The Honda EU2200I for sure will fire off and run long duration the Dometic Penguin II OEM OTT OE2 A/C (2018 Model Year).  I am of the understanding that the slightly smaller

I know of at least one Inverter 2000 W generator that will not pull the load.  But from what  understand, the Honda EU 2000i has done so for several owners.  I suspect you may have problem with the (most likely) your A/C (Start/run capacitor), or your Honda (especially if converted to Propane) or your EZ Start if it is not "pulling the load".

OWNERS WITH HONDA EU 2000i generators:  Will your pull the Dometic Penguin A/C?

The three "killer of a deal" questions were poised to other owners to ask when they are considering upgrading their A/C.  Good to know in advance if their generator will "pull the load" or not.  Could be a costly "Oh Crud" moment.  🙂

@MAX Burner, here's a link to a very old but extensive thread on the easy start and Honda 2000. It includes some great troubleshooting information, and advice from MicroAir rep, and some Ollie owners..

Maybe you'll find it helpful.

I split this off to a new topic, so both of you can get relevant comments.

We’re using a EU2000i to run our Dometic 13.5K AC with MicroAir EZ start up to 5,000msl so far, no issues.

Bill,

Does your EU2000i have an echo mode setting? And with the EZ start will it run your 13.5 Dometic in echo mode?

Thanks!

Only ran AC with ECO mode off so far, it’s just my preference. Never tried to run AC with ECO mode on. Purchased and installed the MicroAir EZ start worked fine with the 2000 Honda. When charging battery through Progressive converter or anything else, run gen-set in ECO mode.

Purchased the gen-set for camping, ended up using it more for other non-camping uses. Very handy and the older I get really appreciate a lightweight gen-set of at least 2000W. It has 1600W continuous rating that runs an airplane engine preheater easily.

On mine, YES it will BUTTTTTTTTTT

When I looked that voltage drop and time to fire off the unit, I only run my Honda on full power mode when I have the A/C running.

I think that makes sense. If you have a 13.5k btu I doubt eco mode would be happy.

Btw, @MAX Burner. I hate to ask, as you likely know, but, do you have a neutral ground plug installed on your Honda?

Every once in awhile, it's the simplest thing that is the solution.

Without a neutral/ground plug in an outlet on the generator, no electricity will pass through the EMS.  So nothing about the A/C or any other 110V appliance would run. You’d know right away because the A/C fan would not even start up.

@SeaDawg: We bought our EU2000 new in 2009, I do not recall adding a "neutral ground plug" since then (but, I've slept since then).  How would one check for such a plug?

It’s one of these accessories (link below), plugged into one of the AC outlets on the generator.   Generators need one of these to tie neutral to ground.  Otherwise the EMS in the trailer will show an error.

Hate to be a nitpicker, but technically as stated I think you are only 99.5% correct.   For bonus points you need to add "Unless you activate the bypass switch on the EMS".

More than once my first year I was stumped why my generator was not working.  FINALLY with a similar prompt, I learned of the "Bonded Plug" trick.  Then I would forget to use it and bypass the EMS and my generator works because I had left the EMS in bypass.

IMHO, it is better to leave the EMS in use mode and instead remember to use the bonded neutral plug.  Just a matter of brain retraining.   🙂

Yea for $15 you can buy one of these:  image.png.825f9ce248f058e1fa68177e566027a0.png

But most of us just take a plug and make our own for free.  If you are a John D though, you would want to add a rope loop out the end where the wire normally passes.  Then I would loop the plug around the handle of my generator so I don't lose it and also as a visual reminder to..... you got it....... USE IT!   🙂

Our Honda 2000i starts/runs the Dometic A/C with Micro Start installed.  You need to make sure the fridge is on gas because the fridge will default to AC if it is set to Auto. The generator can't run both.  I thought I had a bad genset until I figured this out.
