Dehumidifier for the Oliver

This is a duplicate of a post I made on the Facebook Oliver owner’s page. I’m sharing here for those not on Facebook that may be interested in a dehumidifier option for their Oliver. 

We were experiencing rainy and cool weather at the rally and conditions in the Olivers were getting steamy.

Facebook post:

Temperature and humidity outside at Lake Guntersville state park are 62deg and 94% humidity this morning. Inside OllieHaus it’s a perfect 73 deg and thanks to our counter top dehumidifier, it’s a very comfortable 46% humidity with all windows closed. No heat or AC needed. Loving life in our Oliver!!

Related to this, has anyone used the dehumidfy mode on their Truma AC?  Does it use significantly less power than simply running the AC?  Looking at this issue from a humidity control approach while boondocking.

There are no amp or watt specs listed in the ad. Maybe @Ollie-Haus can measure actual usage. You would certainly use a bit of AHs when running overnight or 24x7.

Looks like it doesn't have a UL or ETL certification either...

Glad you pointed this out. I did measure load in the camper that morning and on high it was drawing 1.75 amps / 125 watts. 
 

Regarding when we use this, I leave it on all the time while in storage and plugged in to keep humidity low in the Oliver during storage.

For the situation this post was referring to, we were without power in the park due to storms, and the very low draw allowed us to remain in total comfort running only the dehumidifier throughout the night, and in the morning we still had 69% of our lithium batteries (640 a/h system) remaining on the Victron meter. 
 

We are currently reroute home so I will answer additional questions this evening.

We have two of these we use at home and in the Oliver and they both have performed flawlessly for the past 18 months, and the one in OllieHaus bounces down the road while traveling. We rap in a blanket and set it upright on the floor while traveling.

That's good to hear, and I hope they continue to work flawlessly for you. Personally, it's a red flag and I won't run any appliances in my home or Ollie without a UL or ETL certification. Even then, still not a guarantee that the unit is actually certified as seen with the Gree dehumidifier recalls that covered a decade of units that caused hundreds of fires and a few deaths that were found to have faked UL certifications.

Thanks. That’s excellent, how efficient it is! That’s 42 Ah per day running 24 hours on high.

I have used the dehumidify function on our Truma. I believe it works by simply running the compressor constantly until you turn off the dehumidify setting.  It does a great job lowering the humidity, but also makes the Oliver frosty cold pretty quickly. It would not be a good option when not running on shore power and I rarely use this function since it makes the Oliver so cold and only lowers the humidity while the dehumidify function is running.

Another benefit to the dehumidifier is if you run it while running the AC on a normal cooling cycle, it helps reduce the humidity spikes that occur when the AC compressor shuts off. The comfort level in the Oliver is much improved in this scenario.

Yes, and if you run it on normal setting with a humidity set point, the compressor cycles on and off. The power consumption drops to around 30 watts while the fan alone runs and the compressor is off. This little guy sips power. 👍

I had a larger unit that was in storage.  I brought it out today and put it on the floor of the head.  It is a bit overkill but removed about 30% humidity in less than two hours.  I will likely upgrade to a much smaller unit that can be placed on the countertop.

I can verify, as others have said, the Truma AC works fine but you need to be a polar bear to enjoy it.   I believe it also uses the same amount of power at it does in AC mode.
