  1. Another spec will confirm you need the Andersen WDH. See the table John Davies posted earlier. It states the Maximum Tongue Weight capacity for a Titan XD hitch is 500lbs (no WDH). Your vehicle might be different, but probably not. That spec is not on the door stickers, it may be in your owners manual. The Oliver LE2 Tongue Weight is 490 lbs, empty & parked, without the front basket. Therefore, you will likely be over capacity without the Andersen WDH. If you are ever involved in a crash (your fault or not) your insurance contract could be voided, because by law you must adhere to OEM towing specifications.

  2. “or better yet, a small travel trailer, less than 5000 pounds, and get to know your Titan long, LONG before you pick up your Ollie.” Great idea John! That’s why I got the truck some months before the trailer. I knew I would need to get used to it. Very good advice 🙂

  3. Mine wasn't so glamorous - I "ran away" from home and decided to sleep with my dog in the back yard in his dog house. I still don't know just how it was that I awoke the next morning in my own bed!

  4. Just for fun, I thought I'd throw this out there. For me, the very first "independent" camping experience was army surplus, from my uncle, thrown over a clothesline wire, between two trees, on our farm. Summertime, of course. Army blanket for a ground cloth, and some kind of cotton batten sleeping bags. I think I was not quite four. Maybe just over four? Not sure. My sister and I (she's a year younger) had a grand time. Of course, I had to "watch" her. That was ok, and still is. My little bff. And, of course, mom and dad were just steps away, in the house. If we needed them.

  6. Hi everyone, thank you for the awesome feedback. I got a slightly used titan XD. It will haul close to 11,000 pounds so I have plenty of room to spare. I appreciate all the advice and comments. It has built-in sway protection so I don’t think I’ll need the Anderson hitch. I will double check but I believe that is the case. Happy interdependence day to all!

  7. Our Dad bought us a canvas 2 person pup-tent. Started camping in the back yard. Eventually started back packing and camping in local woods. When camping in the woods would take side meat, eggs, and cook with Sterno stove. Really enjoyed that! 🙂

  8. We picked up our Ollie 2 Hull #1139 (We thought we were getting Hull#1132 lol) on June 9, 2022, 1 pm appointment time. After our orientation and education walk around and through by Ryan (very knowledgeable) and our last Financial Paid in full payment to Shelli (A Sweetheart)......We spent the night loading what Camping supplies we brought with us and operating everything we could to make sure everything was working before departing the next day. We met at least three other Oliver owners during this time and found that Nice people do own Oliver's. Some even shared helpful advise of the things they had experience about their unit. Awesome folks! We found a couple of items that needed attention. A little caulk needed below and above the bathroom entrance door (btw these these two seams really need a cover piece to make them more attractive). The front door needed adjustment and the Air Flow fan in the center of the Ollie would not operate properly and had to have a new board installed the next day (June 10). After leaving the factory, we drove to Cullman, Alabama about 140 South of Hohenwald, Tn and spent 11 day's at the Palomino RV Resort ($54 a night) A very nice place to stay! There we utilized the Camper while visiting relatives in the area. We had two other issues pop up with the unit. The battery straps buckle that are in the battery compartment (AGM batteries) had broken. Jason in Service sent out new ones to my home and they have been replaced. The touch led lights over the sink & cooktop both went on the blink. Jason in Service authorized new lights be sent to my home. They are Riveted in and I replaced them with the help of an experienced friend who had done some Riveting in the past. (Note: a small instruction should be wrote up on exactly what to expect if you need to replace these lights in the future). Example: The original connection on the wiring, once the lights are removed, will not pull out of the hole to replace them! You have to splice the new wires to the old wires, so now you have two connection splices. The room to reinsert the wires is very small but we got them back in by removing some of the foam. The new lights are now functioning as intended! The Ollie will be parked in the RV garage (affectionally nicked named Ollie Avenue, for the time being). We are searching for a name to give the Ollie but no hurry. We are in the process of awaiting a mattress topper from MATTRESS INSIDER and 4 sets of fitted sheets. My new Dodge Ram Limited 1500 5.7 liter truck is due for some warranty electrical work and once that is completed and the sheets arrive, we will be off and running to enjoy our new Camper. Hope you enjoy the pictures!?

  9. @Rivernerd, I am sorry to hear or your poor experience with Specialty Products Technologies (https://www.specialtyproducttechnologies.com) (sptech.com), the vendor for the TrailerLife odometer, manufactured by Veeder Root. IMHO, their customer service response is entirely unreasonable. I suggest you phone them at (910) 862-2511 and ask for someone in a managerial capacity to whom you can express your dissatisfaction. 10. I was 8 or 9 I’m guessing. Somewhere in NH in an old Army surplus tent, full of old army surplus gear…it rained and rained.. I remember sitting on a cot with my little sister and brother eating cold spagettios and trying to keep our feet above the water as it rose, and watching stuff float around the tent. The three of us got a kick out of it.. not sure my mother felt the same..

  11. Me to, I find I still use my Boy Scout experiences today when camping, it's funny what other campers say, how did you know to do that. I do carry my Boy Scout Handbook with me in the trailer and yes, I have looked up things in it at times. The book is some 64 years old and still going strong. Too bad the B S aren't what they used to be. trainman

  12. This is a bad situation for a number of reasons, and I am really surprised that Oliver ever did it this way. People have been talking about this “ ground through the ball” issue for literally decades, usually it is about cheap boat or utility trailers, where each outside light has a little ground wire that is clamped under a mount screw. There is no central frame to light harness connection. It is a recipe for really unreliable long term operation, especially when you try to charge a battery through that type of floating connection. Plus running electricity through steel or aluminum parts causes corrosion. And dunking a boat trailer in salt water REALLY screws this up. The Andersen hitch uses a plastic non-conducting friction sleeve between the ball “stud” and the ball mount, so the ball AND the whaletail are electrically isolated from the stinger part. Does that seem like a good ground path for 10 or 15 amps of electricity? And for your brake controller current? You should definitely modify your white 7 pin harness ground wire by connecting it to a frame ground, preferably the big stud under the rear dinette seat. This should be a Technical Bulletin for the older trailers! How many hours have you wasted looking for the solution? Have your brakes ever worked correctly? John Davies Spokane WA

  13. We have ebikes and they go in the bed of the pickup, they do fold, but we still couldn't get then through the camper door anyway. Personally I'm too picky to put something like that in the trailer, plus scratches would surely showup right quick in the fiberglass. If you tow vehicle does not have room for them then a carrier on the rear of the trailer is probably your best bet. These ebike weight around 60lbs. each so for me the rear rack is out, but I wouldn't carry them there anyway, not as secure as the pickup box. trainman

  14. My guess is that if you could bring them inside, that they would move around too much despite being bungee corded and mar surfaces. I think the forces exerted on the bikes due to trailer movements would damage the surfaces. Maybe if they're wrapped in blankets you might stand a chance, but how do you secure them inside? Where does the bungee attach in the trailer. Those same forces might pull the attachment in the trailer away and damage your trailer.

  15. Mid 1960s, Boy Scouts in southern Oklahoma. Hiking, campfires, little tents. When my dad got back from Vietnam the first time we got an 8X10 canvas tent that my parents and us five boys and two dogs could fit in. Then we got a pop up that we towed, I was 15 and it was my first towing experience with my dad in Vietnam the second time. We 5 boys could set it up while mom watched. Good times. As part of my career as an adult I got to camp all over Europe and many places in the US. Mike

  16. One more suggestion, buy a simple 7500 pound rated dead weight ball mount for your receiver, which I think is 2”, choose a “drop” in inches that will put the top of the ball at about 18” off the ground. That is pretty standard for most rental trailers. Buy a 2” ball, with a similar rating, and go rent a U-Haul trailer, or better yet, a small travel trailer, less than 5000 pounds, and get to know your Titan long, LONG before you pick up your Ollie. You can then use the mount as a spare to move your Ollie a short distance if you don’t want to hook up the Andersen. I use one to pull the trailer out of the RV bay to wash it, plus for an occasional rental trailer for moving stuff. John Davies Spokane WA

  17. You can join the Nissan owners portal, enter your truck VIN and you can see all sorts of derails about its build. I don’t know if it lists every option, some sites do that. You can check for service history, service bulletins and recalls, but the latter “should” have already been done. https://www.nissanusa.com/owners.html John Davies Spokane WA

  18. The sticker you posted previously does show the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight rating) of 8750 pounds. That is the heaviest it can ever legally weigh. If you were to weigh the truck with full gas tank and no cargo on a commercial scale and subtract it from that number, that figure is what you have left for payload. That method takes into account any aftermarket stuff a previous owner might have added, like a really heavy rubber bedliner (100 pounds) or heavy offroad accessories like steel bumpers and skidplates, up to 500 pounds 😳. The factory payload sticker represents how the truck left the factory, before a dealer or an owner started adding stuff to it. Keep in mind, if you want to increase the payload a little you can remove stuff, for example, take out the rear seats and install a cargo platform. John Davies Spokane WA

  19. SeaDawg. No the original contractor is not involved with this project. A couple of us are the main crew doing the work and we are bringing in contractors as we need equipment and/or a couple younger/strong backs. Standard concrete project design and construction. The finish project will have vertical concrete walls pinned into the existing slab & the building footings. The vertical walls will also have angle rebar connecting to the floor slab rebar. No remaining exposed soil. Fun project and not "Ollie love"; simply when you live in Wisconsin you don't spend $70K+ on a new toy and have it sleep outside in the winter.

  20. This is a LOCKED thread. I wanted to put all my links in one spot so that they are easy for folks to find. Search remains a real problem with this forum! This thread does not allow comments. If you have questions, find a dead link or just want to talk, you can comment on the appropriate thread, or start a new thread or just Message me. I will add to this page as I start new threads, so hopefully it will continue to be a good up-to-date reference. NEWEST POSTS ARE AT THE TOP. I am not going to bother to alphabetize them, LOL. I put a link to this page in my signature, so you can get here directly from any of my comments. 23. @Alberta and Randy, just one other thought, and you've probably already addressed this (or Jason has), do you know if the charge wire from your trailer 7 pin connector is actually connected? Oliver does not connect it today if customers have the lithium option, in an abundance of caution for today's modern alternators. However, it's also possible that your connection was inadvertently omitted, or the connection has been disrupted, over the years. That would mean that you're not charging the trailer batteries while traveling, either, from the truck. Your rooftop solar could mask that problem, as the solar will charge on the highway, if you have any kind of sun.

  24. Nice truck! Congratulations! Lots of great features for towing, from what I've read. Glad you found something you enjoy driving.

  25. You can get crossbars for bike racks that fit over a tonneau cover on the truck. That way you still have the truck bed for other storage. This is our Diamondback cover, but there are others that basically work the same way.

  26. Or get a tall canopy for great weather and theft protection, and a bed slide; https://www.bedslide.com/p-35835-bedslide-stories.html You can mount your bikes to trays or fork mounts, and slide the tray out for easy access, so you don’t have to crawl inside around other gear like a generator. And you could use a ramp. If your truck isn’t lifted with monster tires it will be a lot easier 😬 John Davies Spokane WA

  27. John, yes we believe our trailer brakes have/do work correctly (till proven otherwise). We have set the Gain value on our truck and used the trailer brake controller pinchers to test that the trailer brakes engage and stop the vehicle/trailer when traveling at slow test speed. I can't address why Oliver initially configured the trailer this way, however, it seems like they changed to a trailer grounding configuration at some point so that is good. I believe we will be looking at getting this issue changed over with a trailer ground point, as we would like to have the option to use a portable solar panel connected at the 7pin.

  28. You guys are all GREAT! Thanks for all the advice! I am hoping to buy a truck with an open bed soon. I think I will use my feet this trip as I do not want to do any damage to the brand new Ollie!

  29. YMCA camp when I was 10 and again when I was 11. My dad bought a Apache pop-up camper when I was 12.. It had a double bed (for my Dad) and the pop-up canvas went to the side and made a side room. We had two cotts on either side of the door, one for me and one for my best friend who was from NYC. We went all over New England and Canada each summer. Mom stayed at home and worked in her restaurant. (she did not like camping anyway because there was no toilet in the popup or so that was her excuse). We would eat supper and Dad would go visit with the neighbors while we boys were assigned to washing the dishes. Those were the good old days as a kid. We never needed to get a reservation at campgrounds so we just traveled whereever Dad drove us.

  32. I was 7-8 not sure. Dad had a new 1965 Chevy C30 4x4 step side, with a slide in camper. Mom Dad and my two brothers spent many times at Charleston Beach RI. On the breach way. Driving a couple of miles on the sand to get to the ocean front. My brothers and I got our fill of digging in the sand, when the truck got stuck in deep sand. We always made it. Camped for three four days on the ocean front no one around for miles. With just a ice block refrig small porti potty toilet and 20 gals of water. Good memories.

  34. Wow! I can’t remember my first camping experience! That surprises me. I remember going to Kiser Lake State Park (Ohio) in my grandparent’s Shasta in the late ‘50s. It had the canvas bunks suspended on rods above the bed. All I remember about that trip is how hot those bunks were, that there was an artesian spring to cool off in, and that all the parents were worried about a bobcat howling in the woods behind our camp. My first tent camping was probably with the Boy Scouts, but we did have a canvas tent at home. I just don’t remember using it. We built a tree house (on 4x4 posts) and slept in that many times. I’ve been backpacking and car camping ever since, only having the squaredrop the past five years. Everything before was in a tent. Thanks for making me (try to) remember!

  36. That’s a pretty good payload number for carrying any reasonable amount of camping gear, etc. The other question is whether the truck came equipped with the factory trailer brake controller. You should have something on the dashboard that looks like this photo for the trailer brake controller. The two paddles are to manually apply only the trailer brakes if needed, and the plus/minus buttons are for setting the trailer brake gain control to adjust how hard or easy the trailer brakes are applied when you hit your brake pedal in the truck.
    1 point
  37. Looks like payload is about 2K. Thanks again Chris! It is quite a vehicle And rides and drives like a dream.

  38. Your GVWR is 8,750. You need the empty weight of your truck as optioned to subtract from that number. I think you made a great choice for the TV. Larger brakes, higher payload, etc. Also the color will match perfectly with your new Oliver!

  39. Cool nice looking truck! That appears to be the gas engine? What is the payload according to the driver side door sticker? How big is the gas tank? Do you plan to add a bed cover or canopy? Now you can add the Tow Vehicle info to your signature, 😬 You will most definitely need an Andersen hitch for the LE2 which on average seem to have about a 6000 pound “towing” weight. If you can, keep the tongue light, don’t get the tongue cargo tray and then load a 125 pound generator on it….. And buying the smaller lithium package will save you at least a couple of hundred pounds of dead weight (lead) compared to the AGM batteries. John Davies Spokane WA

  40. The water pump ONLY runs on DC. I always carry a couple of milk jugs filled with water right near the toilet. That way I do not have to carry any water in my fresh water tank but still have more than enough to flush the toilet. This tactic also comes in handy when it is cold outside and I don't want to have water in the plumbing lines due to the possibility of freezing. Bill

  43. "Eggcelsior" is home and soaking in a CT rainstorm after a week-long odyssey in 90+ degree heat following our delivery last Monday. We arrived on time for our delivery Monday morning (Steph was worried we'd hit "rush hour traffic" in Hohenwald, LOL) and were met by Ryan, who did our walkthrough. The walkthrough went fairly quickly, both because we were experienced RVers and because we had studied so much about Olivers on this forum and Oliver University. The only issue we spotted in the walkthrough was a blemish in the gelcoat on one countertop - which they addressed immediately. We then moved to the Oliver campground for the night. The plan was to run with shore power and water connected until the evening, then switch to boondocking mode for the overnight to test all the systems. While in the Oliver campground we met the new owners of Hull 1149 - who were camped overnight, too - and the owners of Hull 77 (Kathy and ? - forgive me, there was a lot going on...) who were there for service. We found a few more issues with Eggcelsior while we camped. We had a bad 30A shore power cable (it wouldn't twist into the locked position) which Oliver replaced. We also had a jumper set wrong inside the Xantrex unit that caused a 5 minute delay in delivering power to the camper after connecting to shore power. That was fixed onsite. Finally, the toilet was rocking on the flange. That which was fixed onsite, too. The next day we moved to David Crockett State Park. The site we chose (Campground 1, Site 1) would have been impossible for a larger rig, but the Ollie and our big dually were able to squeeze in. That night we noticed our air conditioner short-cycling so we filed a repair ticket and returned to Oliver service the next day. Jason was unable to replicate the condition after a morning spent in Service, but I think we found the issue later. The details are here: The next stop was a KOA in northeastern TN. (We booked commercial campgrounds for the entire trip home just in case there were any systems issues that would interfere with dry-camping.) The trailer pulled very well behind our 3500 gas dually, as expected. Steph did some towing driving for the first time in many years (she wasn't comfortable towing the fifth wheels), which was nice. Towing mileage ranged roughly from 9-12 MPG, typically around 9.5 at 70+ MPH and 10+ at around 65 MPH. The next day took us to MD. We have the Lithium Platinum package and ran the fridge on DC while travelling. On a full-sun day we saw the batteries drop to 99% after 7 hours of travel. On a partly cloudy day they were at 97% after 7 hours. On a 4-hour cloudy run we saw a drop to 95%. The third travel day brought us back to CT, where we experienced the worst traffic (and drivers) of the whole trip. (This is our usual experience when we come home.) A quick run to DMV the next morning to get registered, then the truck and trailer got a bath and we loaded up the rest of our stuff for our next trip. All in all, the staff at OTT were excellent and it was a successful venture. A few other observations: Tanks: The trailer is happiest slightly nose high with a slight tilt up on the curb side. After one day with no sewer in the state park, including 2 showers, the black read 19% and the gray 25%. Smart TV: This is really nice. We ran it off my 4G tablet's hotspot and it worked pretty well. There was a some buffering, but the signal strength wasn't great, either. Brakes: Braking was good, but one brake seems a little more aggressive than the other three. Something to watch.

  44. The Rivian has pretty impressive payload and towing specs, but if the real world actual range while towing ends up around 200 miles or so (towing causing a reduction of ~50% of the 400 mile claimed range as mentioned in the above post in other examples) that would be a real pain and not practical for long road trips towing a trailer. You’d be making long charging stops every 2-1/2 to 3 hours, plus the anxiety of constantly looking for charging stations that have access for a vehicle pulling a trailer. The charging stations I’ve seen on our long road trips were just set up for single vehicles. And the charging time to get a full charge would add significantly to your travel time. I get about 325 miles range with my gas F-250 when towing, and on long road trips out in the mountain west states like Wyoming and Montana, there were times when I wished I had more range than that to avoid the anxiety when the gas gauge gets to a 1/4 tank. Even gas stations can be few and far between in some of those areas. I even carry a 2 gallon RotoPax gas container as well just in case. I love the electric vehicles coming on the market and I think they are perfectly suited for the right applications, but towing a heavy trailer over long distances isn’t one of them yet. Our next daily driver for around town errands and short trips/commutes will likely be an electric vehicle. But in that future scenario my daily mileage would be way less than the vehicle range limit, so I could recharge overnight at home as needed when time isn’t an issue, and not have to worry about constantly looking for charge stations. If you want a great show to watch about long distance travel with electric vehicles, watch the series called “Long Way Up” on Apple TV+. Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman riding Harley Davidson electric motorcycles from the southern tip of South America to Los Angeles, with Rivian trucks as support vehicles, along with a diesel Mercedes Sprinter van with big solar panels for help in recharging the electric vehicles, but they still had to bring in diesel generators now and then to recharge, and even had an 18 wheeler big rig do a tow charge of the Rivians at one point.

  45. Use the supplied alligator clips to hook your suitcase solar panel directly to the batteries. Or to your truck battery…. That will tell you immediately whether or not it is working correctly. FYI Oliver’s seven pin harness wire color codes are different, but the actual pin functions are industry standard. If you don’t have a meter as FrankC suggests, get one, since you will have other uses for it in the future. It would be very easy to connect the meter leads to the charge and ground pins, hook up your panel to the trailer batteries, and watch for the voltage rise. I suspect you have a wiring problem in the trailer, as long as your Renogy panel is working. You might want to look at this, it shows the (very awkward) location where your front wire harness splices into the trailer wiring. … https://olivertraveltrailers.com/forums/topic/5271-how-to-junction-box-for-the-7-wire-trailer-harness-under-the-front-dinette-seat/ John Davies Spokane WA

  46. I use a similar setup that you describe on our Oliver. I use a 140 watt Zamp portable panel that has a charge controller built in, and connect to the 7 pin harness with an adapter I made. It’s worked well with no problems. The positive 12v charge wire on the 7 pin harness connects directly to the batteries. If you have an electrical multi-meter, you may want to check to make sure you are using the proper pins on the 7 pin connector, and that there is continuity between the 7 pin 12v charge wire contact and the battery positive terminal. There is a 20 amp breaker on the 12v charge wire (see wiring diagram) so you may want to check that. Ours is a 2019, so I can’t guarantee that your wire color codes are the same.

  49. I’ve run across places with signs that say they won’t refill fiberglass tanks, so that may be something to consider. I looked at aluminum tanks when I was researching, but the weight savings wasn’t as much and didn’t seem worth the price. Can the fiberglass tanks use Oliver’s mounting hardware or do they require something different?
